  • March 24, 1999 - Hovering just above .500, the back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings opted to make some moves prior to the 1999 NHL trade deadline. In a flurry, the Wings acquired Chris Chelios, Wendel Clark, Bill Ranford, and Ulf Samuelsson in an attempt to pump life back into its roster heading into the postseason. Chelios and Clark's debut came against the Buffalo Sabres, with Clark accounting for one of the Wings' two tallies in a 2-1 victory. The Red Wings would go on to fall to the Colorado Avalanche in six games in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
    The trades, in detail:
    1. Tampa Bay traded Wendel Clark and Detroit's 6th round pick (previously acquired, Kent McDonell) to Detroit for Kevin Hodson and San Jose's 2nd round pick in 1999 (previously acquired, Sheldon Keefe).
    2. Tampa Bay traded Bill Ranford to Detroit for a cond. pick.
    3. Chicago traded Chris Chelios to Detroit for Anders Eriksson and Red Wings' 1st round pick in 1999 (Steve McCarthy) and a 1st round pick in 2000.
    4. Rangers traded Ulf Samuelsson to Detroit for Wings' 2nd round pick in 1999 (David Inman) and the return of the Rangers' 3rd round pick in the 2000 Entry Draft (Dominic Moore).

Former rivals now wearing the Winged Wheel. While Wendel Clark wouldn't last that long in Detroit, Chelios would end up with the team for a decade.

True but it's because he retired after the 2000 playoffs

I think Wendel Clark used to wear football shoulder pads.
