    There are two places where you can adjust the cutting height -
    1) Minor adjustments can be made by adjusting the roller assembly. This adjustment is comparatively easy
    2) Major adjustments can be made on the wheel assembly. This adjustment is a bit more involved -(as described in the video.)
    The Scotts Classic 16" we just purchased (March ,2017) the setting at the wheel is set at the factory in position C, the highest setting.
    By adjusting the roller assembly I can adjust the heights from 1" to more then 2" And no tools required! Planning to cut my Bermuda between these two heights...

    so i have the 100 dollar 16 inch cut reel mower from home depot and after a full summer and so far this summer until today i usedit and liked it then the roller behind fell off, when i looked at the attachment for the roller it was broken on both sides they are plastic and i can't find a catalog or any site to order new ones from, is scotts really gonna make me buy a whole new mower or will they send me new hopefully aluminium roller adjusters?

I can't find it anywhere. does anyone know where you can buy or order these? an actual link would be amazing! I would believe that it doesn't even exist if I didn't see him using it in this video. Maybe disclaimer about the need for a specialty tool at purchase time would've been pretty nice. golleee some of these products now days

    This is so much work to lower it, why not a lever to adjust. I have a 1970s Yardman and with the lever, I can adjust the height but it is too heavy to do twice a week.

  • @potatoecouch
    @potatoecouch Před 9 lety

    Good instructions. Only problem I had was I had to keep backing up the axle /bolt to get clearance to rotate the height-set disk. Just a slight bump and the Gear Assembly slipped off. No problem except that the cog that links with the wheel is a free floating 1 inch long bar. It too, fell out of place. I saw that its ends were square on one side of each end, and the opposite side was rounded. When I reinstall it in the drive shaft, it can be positioned in two different ways. Does it really matter which way??
    ... and HEY, you viewers who say you can't adjust w/o "removing the wheels (!) : once you've decided which of the THREE ranges you want, you needn't disassemble the wheel again. It has a full one inch adjustment with the lever behind each wheel. Who needs to mow lawns at 3" high anyway?

    • @potatoecouch
      @potatoecouch Před 9 lety

      potatoecouch Oops, on second look, I see that the free-floating cog/bar has two curved edges that are situated diagonally. The 2 square edges are PUSHED by the black plastic gear; and the 2 curved edges allow the bar to slip backwards, to let the blades continue to spin or "free-wheel" -- like when you pull the mower backward. So there is a right and a wrong position for that part. Look at how the gear rotates to push the blades and you can probably see how to align the floating cog. Sorry for "sharing" my confusion.

    • @Sig_P229
      @Sig_P229 Před 4 lety +2

      Reel Mowers are never meant for more then 2 or 3 inches. It is meant to be used multiple times a week for a groomed professional looking yard. If you mow tall grass or weeds it will either get caught or fold over and not be mowed.

    • @emuhill
      @emuhill Před 3 lety +2

      @@Sig_P229 I have a solution for that problem. Give the reel mower a good hard and quick push to get the reel spinning at a high speed. Then use small back and forth motions until the grass is cut. Works great on some long crab grass.

    I think factory is perfect height and would recommend leaving the wheels alone,. I suggest adjusting the 2 outer knobs above the roller part and it’s set to medium, with the inside wheel set to high, …
    which with my new fresh seeded grass, I left the wheels alone , (at stock high top hole) but I set the rear 2 knobs to the highest cutting setting so I adjusted the knob to the lowest setting/bottom hole (lowest hole is high, middle hole is medium, and highest hole is lowest cut)
    With that said, 90* temps here, the factory setting to the highest cut is too short. I say about 2.5 almost 3” grass length and I don’t know why anyone would even want to go shorter then that. I prefer 4”-4.5 height during summer and 3.5-4 in winter (yes would take more cutting weekly or biweekly , but I like long full grass)
    So I’m here trying to figure out how to make this Scott’s Reel mower, to adjust it even higher.

    Might be a "LITTLE" difficult to loosen is an understatement. I tore up my knuckles and it still didn't budge , so i ended up knocking off gear when i picked it up i thought it had picked up piece of wood covered in grease, but after tossing away i realized it was supposed to go in gear. I also had issues attaching catcher. The 1 we had when i was a child was so easy this is why i bought in 1st place. I cant return since i got so frustrated last yr i just put in shed & borrowed a gas mower. My husband was killed in a freak accident & I wanted something i wouldn't have to worry about trying to start or working on. Instead I've wasted y limited income on something i cant use.

      It’s stock set to highest setting in the wheel, and theirs 2 knobs near the outside wheel above the roller that you remove easily and shows 3 vertical holes on a plate…. U easily adjust it on lower hole for highest setting (2.5”-3” cut) or highest hole for shorter cut….

    Complete fuking nightmare, hands too big, all angles- know what he means now about 'watching the blades'; whatever upright direction he set's in, had to do upside down/ no wrench I had could fit inside the tiny area once adjusted. At the "needle-nose pliers" part now w/ blood on my hands, house in total disarray &grease on floors. It's not on this dude, it's on Scotts for not making the [main] adjustable settings on outside to begin with upon purchase. 2hrs deep now, then next wheel if can force this bit on. Hoping if I do, the plastic snap on portion works, b/c that orange plastic smooshed out quite a bit.
