Koroit opal is the best kind of opal in the world, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world, its such a pleasure to find as you never know what your going to get, well done documenting it sandy.

I bought some Koroit opal once. I started working on it and it just seemed to melt, until I had nothing. I wasn't too happy and kind of gave up on it. But then... I bought some other pieces about a year later and realized that some of it is garbage and some of it is... some of the finest material I've ever worked with. The Koroit opal you are seeing here is some of the best you can find. They showed a couple of soft specimens, but most of it was hard and beautiful. Look at the patterning in the very first boulder they show you. Those little spirals, usually with an opal lining. Mesmerizing to work on. Thanks for the video, mate! Stunning!

There's a latin phrase that is used quite often when buying opal "caveat emptor" which translates to "let the buyer beware". Buying rough opal, no matter which field it is from, is a tricky business. But you are right, when you get the hard, patterned Koroit opal, there is nothing better. I am lucky to have been involved in finding and working with it. Best,

Yes. In Queensland boulder opal is generally shallow and is open cut mined with excavators just as in this vid. The only time explosives would be used is where the opal layer is under a hill with a hard (silcrete) cap, buit never near the opal level.

Although it may appear 'messy', the end result is that water can penetrate the normally hard surface and the mounds catch windblown seed so that regrowth in mining areas is always far more than the natural surrounds which is desirable.
