- This week we have the pleasure of hosting another video on our channel filmed by Lachlan Blatchford in Coober Pedy!
Some words from Lachlan about the video:
We descend down a hairy 12 foot diameter shaft, weaving through red back nests to fine some beautiful colour in a long abandoned claim where a fortune in top opal may still be hiding! Fingers crossed our renewed explosive licenses come through so we can blow some big holes to get to the big opal.
On the way home we narrowly avoid beasts of feathers and hide and survive to push towards the dream to retire... And go opal mining..
We hope you all enjoy the video leave us a comment and let us know if you would like to see some more mining in Coober Pedy!
Make sure to head over and grab yourself some top quality Coober Pedy Opal:

Awe, it was nice that you saved the little dragon guy ❤🕊️
Always good to rescue creatures from the mine
I'm glad you were able to save the Breaded Dragon. I think you're bonkers going down those mines, but without you doing it we wouldn't have our stunning opals.
Thank you for watching! Hopefully it wasn’t too claustrophobic haha
Thank you guys for sharing this with me ! I live in Kansas in United States ! Take care , stay safe and healthy mates !
Thank you for watching!
@@younggunsopalhunters You're welcome
I sure do like watching you guys.

With you guys, absolutely. Remember me I'm the guy who told you that beer is proof that God loves man!😂😂😂
Hahahaha some beers needed after hard days diggin that’s for sure !
I got claustrophobic just watching you crawl through those holes. All power to you guys
Thanks for watching anyway!
Surface hunting only but admire those that are willing to work underground
Always plenty of gems to be found on the surface too!
@@younggunsopalhunters Love to go surface hunting around Winton on my next visit.
Cool video! Keep em coming!

Epic adventure, mate.
Cheers.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment
Years ago would have loved to visit Australia; then reality sank in.
Awesome dudes, have to come and see your mine one day !
What’s up boys. Hope all is well
Thanks for checking out the vid!
Doing a good job with your channel gentlemen. Make every opportunity pay👍🏻🇦🇺👍🏻
Nice bearded dragon mates!
Dragon guarding its treasure I reckon
@@younggunsopalhunters It surely is.
thanks
You're welcome!
❤ Opals. Years ago cut/polished a few Australian opals. and Mexican opals in rhyolite.
Nice!!! I'd love to go there just to do what you're doing now!!!
I very much enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Was very curious if you fellas ever ran into wildlife while in the mines.
Rescued a few lizards and one praying mantis in my time. New Chum LRidge here .
Don't know if I'd fit down those holes, but yes I'd risk it, cuz Opals my name 😂
I so bored there in Austria! Yes I would!
I'm keen
That was some nice pieces ya showed us.
Wood of liked to of seen the finished product.
And how much you thought you wod of got 4 it?
Maybe next time
Stay safe take care
I would love to one of these day i will yall should say hey to the bushmen for us
9:07 did anyone else see that color shine after showing the piece? 😅😅
Yeah! It’s phosphorescence. Many gems do it, it’s a slow release of the energy from the initial flooding of UV light.
all that silica dust is wild
Yes and not real good for you in the long term luckily my mine is well ventilated . Hello from LRidge NSW.
It can be nasty, we use high quality half face masks and filters these days.
@@TheSilmarillian makes the gem even more pricey the risk/reward I reckon
Yes starting my mine there in about 2 months just getting the drill ready and servicing tunneling machines 😂
Good luck mate!
Yes I would be right beside you up to a point.
Thanks boys
Property pays off.
Man I wish I can work with you guys
Another awesome video 🥰 I love you guys! 💜
Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much!!
Love following you guys, watched u on TV then CZcams, any chance u could make longer videos???❤
Love to watch the video fully if your voice is clear and louder. I crank up the volume max but voice is not clear and low.
Yes I would love to.
Limb and life makes more sense to me
Wheres this mate amazing find
Coober Pedy Olympic field mate.. 👍
@@Opaldigger beautiful spot haven't been there yet only whitecliffs lightning ridge and growing, trying to convince this manner to to let me dog underground for him haha at lightning ridge atm :)
One day I will be out there… one day
im getting old and out of shape. So, probably not. I DO appreciate your activities, however, THANKS!
Thanks for coming along virtually then!
Ungrateful reptile rejected the half a chicken drumstick
How many miles do you drive from home to look for Opal on the average day?
Good luck mates!
Cheers 🍻⛏🇺🇸
Cheers mate! We have a claim on Olympic that’s about 5 miles out of town, but have been to fields working every day that are up to 35 miles away.
Yes I would when do I start?
I need this job is my dream job❤
VO was very quiet, but otherwise amazing
I'm surprized those little UV flashlights are all you use, why not get some big floodlights in that spectrum if you already have power from a genny?
We find the little ones ideal for our field of vision plus they're obviously super light weight and portable so we get to where the opal is a lot faster!
@@Opaldigger I was more thinking about lighting up already dug workings to look for anything that might have been missed, as well as wen going through piles, the opal would be unmistakable
@@seldoon_nemar oh yeah for sure, there’s plenty of scope for different applications with heavy duty black lights, a lot of tunnelling machines have vicious uv lights worth thousands attached to them, they definitely work but are extremely dangerous to the human eye. Personally I find the small details are usually what leads to payable opal. Almost all the big signs have been picked over a thousand times..
Been there done that almost fell down a shaft
You were't holding an OBG coffee on that video were you?
You guys are tough as
Those were some sketchy looking claims you crawled through.
I’d probably get myself buried in a day or two out there.
Take care.
Definitely ayye I am looking for a job tho
It's all luck when searching minerals .
i like working in the dirt as much as the guy but i am not going in the pit
Are ya into searching for Opals on my property close to the NSW border ?
We love to invite ya.
OOh! up near Angeldool and Mehi?
Probably if I loved my family
do you all ever take some nice opal specimens for your own collection? After you make money to help pay for equipment and any damages that might happen?
Yeah we collect some of the best stuff for our business to make into jewelry .
We found a huge pocket of opalised sea shell fossils a few years back and donated a few of them to the South Australian Museum (for a tax credit) 😁
@@Opaldigger nice. opal is so beautiful like a prism of colors.
what's the machine that bore those round tunnel^
It’s a round tunnelling machine, it has an arm that rotates with rotating heads and tungsten teeth, as opposed to the ‘square’ machine that has a head that just goes up and down.
@@Opaldigger thanks, after thinking about it i think thats how they bore gold ore tunnel over but in giant version . The machine must be dusty as hell, does it shoots water? thanks again for your answer
@@marcoallin Not enough water around Coober Pedy for this, most use blowers to suck the dust out alomg with the dirt but fans are pretty powerfu these days and masks are good quality for filtration too.
@@Opaldigger lovely, i would love to see that in person
first. cant believe it.
20 feet down and I'd be yelling, "Nope! Nothing down here to look at! Bring me up and let's go for lunch." I'm just seeing that chunk at the top of the hole - the one with the big crack and looking very break off-ish. Have a big phobia of being stuck in hole while everything wants to cave in on me. Probably going to have a wicked nightmare, now.
Haha, I’m not generally claustrophobic but towards the end, my bro is half way into a small hole, I got into that and tucked my legs up and had the worst claustrophobia in my life for a few seconds, a feeling for a few seconds of being buried alive… no thanks.
I wish I could hear you.
Would You Risk Life And Limb For Opal? Yes!!!!!!!!!!
would love to give you some of my time
I would
No. Next question.
So is this the dad?
Nah we are brothers I’m the older one filming and narrating.
Any risk of getting a pocket of CO2 and suffocating?
Not really but CO build up after blasting or from poorly vented claims near petrol motors has killed quite a few over the years.
Thanks for the Closed Captions. He was difficult to understand.
Not vents but VESTS. It wouldn't let me edit.
My post disappeared. Get some cooling vests and horse spray for red backs, non toxic.
some serious volume issues on this one :(
You know what? Should make a t-shirt that says beer is proof that God loves man and at it to your merchandise! ❤
I have to say that a great channel with consistently good content does not need clickbait titles in their videos. Ever. Very dissapointing. That is trendy bull caca, and makes you guys look desperate for views. If you're desperate for views, just post more frikken content. Cmon boys
Sorry how is the title clickbait? Do you not see him being lowered down into a giant eroded sketchy shaft via a cable (off the back of a Ute) and sitting on a plank of wood ? Opal mining is a dangerous job and this video in my opinion adequately represents the old saying ‘risking life and limb’ in the pursuit of opal. Please elaborate on how it’s clickbait
If you were to fart down there , how long will it linger?
Forever 😂
Do you guys not check the audio of your videos that is horrible
Boo hoo.
@@CaptainRedBeardarrr ?
I don't think it's that bad at all
@@Longbow-jt8jp You had to turn up the volume to hear him next you know you're blowing out your ears
@@aaronsmith5600 im not a earphone person so it may be different. Are you from MtGambier?
Cool 😎
Best gem i ever found came out of a cave in 12k a carrot i got for it ..
Now it's paid content so I guess I'll say goodbye. Good luck on your endeavors goodbye
