He went from maybe it's just a loose battery cable, that would be amazing to, what the heck, the piston is missing. 😅😅 Never changed his tone, didn't lose it his 💩 This guy is awesome
No swearing or cussing, no annoying background music, so I subscribed
I’ve seen a lot of engine tear downs in my lifetime, but nothing ever like this. You couldn’t do that to the piston with a blow torch and hammer. Truly amazing.
I’d definitely try and find a complete used engine for it and skip the rebuild if possible. Good luck!
I'd slap a small block chevy in that bad boy! 🤣😂🤣
Exactly. A full rebuild would be a good investment.
And start again with someone elses problem, no rebuild what you have as you know the problem
@@anthonymisell8845 i agree, rebuild this engine, he now knows what he is dealing with. another engine is begging for more work, nope, i'd rebuild this engine with all new/used parts.
Yea, I agree
I am a retired internal combustion maintenance and repairs engineer and in my opinion that engine was held flat out in neutral till it destroyed its self. That’s after its original partial seizure. I love watching your videos and hope you have a very successful life.

" I am a retired internal combustion maintenance and repairs engineer " Wow, thats a mouth full for a made up title. Typically Engineer designs things, not fixes them.
All true my friend. It’s not made up I can assure you
So a retired mechanic then @@raymondrobertson3869
The clue is in the title on my apprenticeship papers. I will give you a clue 🤔maintenance. Not design. I have overhauled many many engines in my younger days
And could still do it today. As long as someone did the heavy lifting 😂🏴👍👍
@@ugetridofitAka he's a mechanic.
I was starting to think somebody removed the piston, then put the whole thing back together 😄
Me too 😂
Same
That would’ve been a real who to whot
I was thinking the same, but the manner in which the bolts came out and other key tells kept popping up I was like, "Wtf is going on here?"
Or somebody needed just one piston, real bad.
That is a Hisun engine, just rebranded for Cub. Motorcycle Doctor out of Missouri is a good source for parts and knowledge on these.

And this is why I love CZcams and its crowd sourcing. Great info!!
are they cast pistons? thats the only way i see this happening. there has to be others with the same problem. Edit, yes they are cast aluminum pistons. im surprised this isnt a more common issue on china motors.
I've watched you work through a lot of simple fixes, but this is a good reminder to people that when you shop on craigslist, you never know exactly what you're getting. Most people would be at a total loss to fix this repair, my hat is off to you. 👏 EDIT: yeah, that piston will be fine, use some J-B Weld...LOL
@2vintage looks like Cub has a lot of parts available, you might make out ok. looks like the piston is about $200, and the entire cylinder head assembly is about $1k.
Iv niver seen anything like that in my life and I'm a machanic retired. the person who sold you that knew.he has Put a scope in the plug hole and seen there was no piston. Good luck buddy you will still come out on top.
Oh my god, that is hilarious! In my 45 years as a professional tech, I have never seen that level of crazy. Let me guess, the owner never heard a thing.
Why is that funny

there is no Spoon (Piston) a Matrix moment!
It amazes me how you can take everything apart and remember how to put it back together!
He has everything on Video, the perfect memory!
If you own a small wire feed welder here's a small tip......Don't struggle with the pain and aggravation of pulling and installing the engine. Put a .065 cut off wheel in your angle grinder and surgically remove the obstruction and weld the piece back in upon reassembly....I did this multiple times on Ford Econoline Vans 30 years ago.
Brilliant!
See that green base gasket it's been replaced so at one point and time someone had that engine apart
Yep, they pulled it apart, took the piston pieces out and bolted it back together.
@@djpar3492They also drained the oil, and put cleaner used oil back in...then listed it!🙄
Surprised they didn't try to recap the plug too
Years ago, a bunch of us guys went to a Mud Bog event for the day. What happened that day pretty much sums-up this UTV. During one of the truck runs, this 'beasty' of a truck just stopped dead in the middle of the run. Everyone watching seemed perplexed at what had just happened. Someone in our group said, "Let's ask Clarence. He's smart and probably knows what went wrong." So we asked Clarence his opinion. Clarence said, "Something must have broke!"

I took a boat to Jim & Seans Boat Repair (and pot dealers) in Spicewood many years ago and waited months for a new burned piston and head plaining. On one of many check-for-progress trips the 2 "mechanics" installed a V-8 head on a big block v-8 with a screwdriver in front cylinder, in front of me. I told them, but they thought I was giving them BS as payback for delays and continued the repair.... Wish I could have seen the start-up later.
yeah, right... Lil old couple just drove it to church on Sunday. WOW, never say that happen in all my years... Good luck. I hope you can fix it. This is a really interesting one.
Little rip..half the damn seat is gone😂
My thoughts exactly, sounds like a bunch of grandkids.
No metal in oil because it set long enough they settled to the bottom.. been mechanic 40 years, stopped by a guys shop had one of those 275 gallon plastic almost see through totes that was full of oil.. asked him why it was outside.. it looked like clean new oil. He said it had been setting in sun for 10 years and all carbon separated and fell to bottom.. funny I had the same tote empty setting in texas sun 3 years later plastic just broke apart. Guess his oil kept plastic from drying out and breaking down? Love your videos keep them coming
My father was a JD diesel mechanic his entire career… as with you he had a brilliant mechanical mind. I did receive that gene but your mechanical hunting skills are like his were…you folks are amazing

First time i have ever involuntarily let out a "wtf" while watching Joe.
That was a surprise to me.
I am by no means a mechanic but your video was outstanding. Now i know why I am willing to pay someone with experience to fix my stuff. Well done.
Once you get to the rip seat, if you guys have a "hobby Lobby" you can get fabric over there and recover that portion and stich it all back. Just a suggestion. FYI, Hobby Lobby doesn't open on Sundays. Or you can get the fabric from walmart as well, which ever is cheaper. Hope the suggestion helps.
I took my first head off a briggs and Stratton in 1967 . I've done a thousand since then. And I never saw a crankshaft devour a piston like that. Awesome ❤. Always entertaining. Still worth 3500. The vinster can't even look at this catastrophic mess. Lol 😂. ❤❤❤
Bro, Amazon has many MANY cheep boroscopes you plug into your phone, i got one for $20 with a light up end and it works awesome..... You should get one buddy.....makes life so much easier.👍👍
The good news is that the same engine is used in quite a few SxS from HiSun, Odes, Massimo, etc, so you should be able to put something back in there
Incredible viewing. You definitely have a huge amount of perseverance and patience. I take my hat off to you.😊
Joe upon discovering @ 31:19 the piston had left the building, "What the heck" I feel at this point it's justifiably appropriate to say, WHAT THE FUCK!🤣
Apparently the grandkids were given the keys. 😂 After the many years of viewing this channel, this has got to be the finest episode that I have had the pleasure of consuming.🤣
greetings from Serbia, I follow every video of yours, all the best, and I do it myself, I would recommend you to pay more attention to cleaning and washing parts, meticulousness is 90% of the job
You're absolutely right!
Great to see an honest teardown of engine that we unlucky mortals usually find ourselves working on (ie not one tweak and its working again)....reckon that engine was at full revs when that piston destructed,no old people riding that then.
OMG. I've pulled apart and rebuild a few engines in 50+ years but never seen one do that before. Just incredible. Good luck putting this back together again, although by the looks of the damage, a replacement engine might be a lot less hassle !
The ole disappearing piston trick. I've seen a lot of engine carnage, but never that. Usually when a piston lets loose like that there would be holes in the case. That's impressive!
Exactly...
Old folks probably didnt check the oil like they should.
Joe needs a bore scope.
So is he a sucker ?
Must have been a chinese piston of dubious quality.
Define “Older Couple” that thing was rode hard and put away wet!
It was rode hard and put away DEAD!
But they only used it for gardening and church on Sunday. HONESTLY 😵💫
“Grandma used it to tote tulips around the yard” 😂 Yeah sure, judging from the dirt under motor it’s been mudded and rode hard
Came over from your FB short video. Not disappointed. Looking forward to follow ups.
It's probably something easy!
Geez, they got the mix off when casting that piston.
I always avoid vehicles driven by someones grandparents.
Just bought a non running Royal Enfield Himalayan and when I took the head off it was the same situation. The piston had blown apart. Everything was unusable, head, cylinder, crank. I opted for a replacement engine as even the cases were banged up, plus the replacement engine was cheaper than a rebuild. Good luck!
What did a new motor cost you?
@@glengarbera7367it was around a grand with shipping for a basically brand new (2 miles) engine.

Your my new hero buddy. I can't believe the piston was just gone!!! Grandkids must have taken an easy ride behind grandparents eyes lol.
Holy crap buddy! I'm 61 years old and I've seen everything but I've never seen a piston completely disintegrated. Wow
You've never seen a piston or rod get thrown? Must not deal with engines much, I had seen multiple before I was 18.
11:20 the reason you see a low voltage going to the starter is because the starter is in a locked rotor condition and draws excessive amps while NOT turning! Similar low voltage can be measured @ the Pos of the battery when the solenoid/relay is engaged !
Stopped in water crossing!
Wow! I am 53 years old and have never seen a piston do that. Crazy!
Worst engine tearout ever - best video ever!
Since you have everything apart, how about converting it to an electric motor and battery? Marty T in New Zealand did that with parts from different machines - ended up with a very quiet machine and incredible acceleration. I’d love to have a quiet ATV - my Canam makes so much noise going through the woods it scares away every animal in the county 😊
Thanks Joe.
Your new theme song lately. "I'd catch a grenade for ya" 😂
first for me too, never seen anything like that before. musta disintegrated and not turned any further to spread chunks.

If it was me, you would have only heard minutes of bleeps during the inevitable setbacks. Great job!
Unfortunately, that's how the cookie crumbles at times. Love your videos and the detailed breakdowns, repairs as well as the assembly process. You motivated me to purchase a 2006 YZ450F for $800... lol. I have about $750 into it... waiting for the parts to arrive. Keep kicking ass man!

Joe, I had a Suzuki dealership with my dad in the 70's we replaced rods ourselves using the shop press to press apart installing new rod and bearing and pressing back together then using a straight edge making the counter weights even never had a problem u might try it. We did it on all the racing bikes as well.
Cub Cadet is One of the 8 brand names out there made at the Chinese company of Hysun (spelling) I forgot all there names now, but back in 2020 we bought a brand new Massimo and had it shipped to out door in Floo’da from Texas for $5,900 …!!
I've seen alot of crazy stuff while fixing bikes and quads but no piston and then to find it in the bottom end that has to be a first.

My brother was the auto mechanic, Cadillac, BMW, you name it, he could fix it even worked on diesel engines. However, me, I don’t know very little about the engine of a vehicle… however, even I know that a piston does not look like that, should not have been destroyed like that which is totally totally crazy. I had a VW as a first car. Overall a good car but started loosing pressure. Took it to a mechanic to get it fixed. It ran really smooth until the intake valve got sucked into the piston (read through) when I was getting on the Freeway 2 blocks from my house. That thing sounded like a thrashing machine on a bad day. But the mechanic was honest and rebuilt it for free. He had misread his calipers. Owning up to a mistake brought greater respect.

It looks like a nice machine though overall and I bet another older couple could buy it up from you once it's completed.......I did this to an LS1 v8 one time, out of nowhere it exploded under throttle (someone had been in the engine before me) and it put a hole in the block and left a trail of Pennzoil for 300 feet. It was quite the glorious exit.
I love how you do one step at a time to find out what is wrong. Then you fix it!
Yes,but he always does the wrong steps first! You don't spend time testing solenoids and starters before pulling the plug! Or try starting, checking for spark, etc. before testing compression. He does this EVERY VIDEO.
Spark plugs and compression should be checked BEFORE any thing is bought! @@Mizman76

you are a good .Mechanic Thanks for the lessons.I never saw a engine that bad. good job.I want to see the rebuild.
I absolutely DESPISE when I see people connect a TONE of crap to the battery. Get a junction box and put it to the side and run a cable down to it. You can properly fuse it AND it looks neat. I just dont get why people insist on doing it this way.
Looks like someone lefted a few things out when telling you about that engine. You could always run it Freddy Flintstone style in the meantime. Well the good news is it can be fixed with time and bit of money but you can get it done... You sure do find you some good one's...
lol! Freddy style!
WILMAA...!! 😂😂
Looks like a piston circlip came out,&the gudgeon pin moved smashing the barrel lining& the piston exploded.
Wrist pin: don’t look at me.
That piston went full yeet! 😆
Ridden hard put up broke, but you got this.
Love the channel, been following a LOT of re-builds.
A little advice from an electronics engineer - Don't continually try to turn the motor over when the starter is locked up......you'll only end up burning out the starter and/or the solenoid.
Also, a clue that either the battery is knackered or the starter was locked up was the backlighting on the clocks going dim when you turned the key.......a lot of current flowing out the battery and a large voltage drop.
starters and solenoids are cheap though so its not a big deal at all.
I can’t wait to watch the outcome of this. I hope you are able to finish this project and take some serious hot laps. 😊
I agree the piston with a little JB weld will be like new😂
Seen those stuff at my bike (Honda NX250) and more (plus bended, destroyed connection rod, plus bended axle at gearbox).
this is now my favorite small engine repair channel!

Back in the 70's me and a buddy pulled the head off an old '63 Cadillac Fleetwood with a 390" someone gave us and two of the cylinders looked the same way, cam was broken in three places and it was a total wreck. We found the engine and trans from a '64 with the newer but same block 429" engine and swapped it in, they told us it wouldnt fit the previous year Cadillac but we had the driveshaft reworked, redrilled the rear trans. crossmember mount for the new drivetrain and it ran fine.
