    Man, as a mexican myself I can only say one thing: thank you for doing this video, I think there's not bigger respect towards a culture than to be accurate to the real history and tell it as it is, so thank you for teaching stuff that most Mexicans probably don't even know, and keeping that real history alive

    • @ManvsHistory
      @ManvsHistory  Před 3 lety +62

      @@ulucio86 Yeah, vaqueros of the American West embodied Spanish tradition intermixed with New World/indigenous influences- but you're correct that the foundation is certainly Spanish. Arnold Rojas (author of 'These Were the Vaqueros') makes no qualms about that in his works, much of which involve his travels to and through Spain tracing vaquero history to its origin. The Spanish were the ones who brought horses, cattle, and the vaquero tradition to the New World. Period. But it certainly evolved once here into a unique style, with new equipment, vocabulary, etc, thanks to those Mexican/indigenous influences, in much the same way that the vaquero also evolved into the 'American Cowboy' iteration in Texas and the Northern Ranges. But Spain is the birthplace, as Rocco points out. I highly recommend Rojas' books on the subject for anyone interested in tracing all this through history. They're amazing.

    I love how 1907 John's Spanish is worse than his 1911 Spanish. In 1911 he says "¿mi nombre es John Marston, comprende?" While in 1907 he rides a mule into a group of Del Lobos firing off his sidearm yelling "¡BEUNAS NOCHES!" as his mount brays.

Luckily, Rockstar gave us the ingredients to work with like, having the open world set in the Frontier era and all the details they added. It’s just up to us players to bake up our own fun and imagination in this massive Old West open-world! I know we need A LOT more content, DLCs, and just a better experience for us Online players, hell...even Story, but what MvH does that’s perfect and inspiring, is he’s really bringing out the true history of the time, and showing off the world Rockstar created with what we got, which is still a good amount of “props” and etc to make some legit exploration. It’s awesome how many vids MvH has pumped out just on true topics, with every video incredibly detailed and well-researched! 🤠 that’s just my random two cents lol.

    Historically accurate Mexican Vaquero? Well, that all depends on what era are we talking about. The Mexican costume has changed a lot through out the last 400 years. For example, the stereotypical high conical crown sombrero did not come into use until the 1880’s. Before that, the Mexican sombrero, called Jarano (harano), had a low rounded or low flat crown. The name sombrero just means hat in Spanish; the actual name of the hat is Jarano.
    Until the 1870’s the boots that the Mexicans used were called “Botas Campaneras” or “Botas de campana” which means “Bell boots” because they looked like bells; they were actually not boots, but two pieces of tough deerskin wrapped around the lower leg. Until then the pants, called calzoneras, were left open at the bottom to show off the “boots.” The botas campaneras are no longer in use, and since the 1870’s the Mexicans use the common Wellington boot.
    The Armas or Armas de Agua (water shields), started to go out of style in the 1830’s. Although you can still find them in use today in some mountain areas of Sinaloa and Durango. The Armas, were two pieces of goat skin hung from the saddle horn and protected the pants from the rain. They could also serve as a table or bed. It was in the 1830’s when the Chaparreras (chaps) came into use, thus replacing the Armas. Chaparreras in the 19th century were made out of different materials: Jaguar, puma, bear, cow and goat skin.
    The Poncho is South American. The Mexicans used a Sarape and a Manga; the Manga resembled the Poncho but the Manga was more elaborate and expensive. Today Mangas are no longer used, while Sarapes still exist.
    If you want a more earlier look, say the 1600’s, the clothing would be much different. The oldest description of clothing worn by Mexican vaqueros (who were mostly mulattos, mestizos and blacks) is from 1607. Father Ramírez de Alarcón mentions them in a report about the situation of the inhabitants of Nueva Galicia (present day Jalisco and Zacatecas). Ramírez de Alarcón complains and warns the authorities about this “outlaw” Vaqueros that roam the countryside on horseback well armed: “These people are agile, robust and grow in their generation and multiply too much, and you can very well expect trouble, because […] there is a man who gathers 300 men on horseback from these outlaws to work as Vaqueros, and most are armed with strong Cueras, arquebuses, scythes, hocking knives and other weapons.”
    These Vaqueros wore “Cueras” which at the time, was a kind of leather armor or jacket that served as armor, made out of cuero or rawhide. The Cuera was similar to the European buff coat. Their weapons: the arquebus, scythes, knives and “hocking knive” called “Desjarretadera” (de-hocker) a long lance with a sharp crescent moon shaped blade at the tip that was used to incapacitate wild bulls by cutting the “jarrete” or hocks. This is before roping came into use.

    I know you don't usually talk about the potential firearms of the game but I've read about something I think might interest you. The Cass Repeating Belt Gun. It was a repeater style rifle which got its name from the belt of paper cartridges stored in the stock, making the stock very bulky and gun extremely back heavy. It held 26 rounds in it's stock belt and the stock opened up for replacement of the belt. There are sadly only two specimens that remain and they have differences if memory serves it was one having an octagonal barrel, different rifling, and different sights. The gun was invented in 1840s-50s and while it's bulkiness means it is unlikely anyone but it's inventor (the patent was made in the northern states, but on of the specimens was found in Texas) ever journeyed with it. Regardless it is an overlooked but massively overlooked landmark in firearms history as it was likely one of the first true belt fed guns.

      Sounds awesome! I always thought that once in a while R* should hold a flea market in game, where you could by old obsolete firearms (and other items) for your own amusement. Stuff that isn't very effective compared to 1898 technology (think old black powder rifles with their reloading time, etc) but is still there for folks who want to collect and use old weapons as they please. This would be a way to incorporate a gun like the Cass.

    Hey I’d like to add something on the topic of horses! While all color mustangs were used by vaqueros, the closest to the Kiger would be the Tiger Striped Bay Dun! Lots of the Kigers have the striped zebra markings on their legs and down the back! Also, another horse candidate could be the criollo. Some vaquero-like figures used this breed, including Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. He named his horse “Siete Leguas” or “Seven Leagues” in English, because that’s how far she could ride in a day. Your video was awesome and I love vaquero culture. Thanks for the awesome info!

    Just saw this video! My first direct ancestor in CA was a conquistador with de Portola/Serra's expedition, which makes me a Californio. On top of that, my great-great grandfather, Tranzito Rojas, was a gaucho born in Valparaiso, Chile, but moved to central California sometime after the American Civil War. He was a master roper and was able to lasso a quail in mid flight. It would be right to be doubtful of such a story, but I have heard it from several relatives over the years as well as some old-timers who met him when they were children around the turn of the century.
