Today we're looking at the historical appearance and clothing of 'Cold Weather Cowboys' in the American West. For this week I reached out to Michael R. Grauer at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Dan Shook at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS, and Anne Marie Mistretta at the historic Crail Ranch. Thank you to all of them for their help on this project! Additionally, I used a variety of photo archives from the late-1800s, and the Library of Congress' Newspaper Archives. As for a secondary source, I used Jeremy Agnew's 'The Old West in Fact and Film: History vs Hollywood,' (which I recommend highly).
About Man vs History: Man vs History is a CZcams channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
Music:
Main Track: Leaning on the Everlasting Arms- Zachariah Hickman. Available on CZcams Audio Library.
Outro Track: Jazz Me Blues - E's Jammy Jams. Available on CZcams Audio Library.

I've got your fix. Have at it, Mark!
I just rewatched all my favorite mvh videos yesterday so it truly was good timiny

As a history teacher who references video games constantly, these videos are like the 3rd bite of pizza to me.

I just wish people could understand the magnitude of the historiography that you compile in these CZcams videos.
Keep up the awesome work.
Mighty kind of you, Jacob! Appreciate you noticing!
@@ManvsHistory have you considered compiling your findings into professional works?
@@deovindice2625 Perhaps a ways down the road. Just have some other projects that interest me more at the moment.
I agree this channel is criminally underrated
You will?
I would love to see the most historically INACCURATE outfit in red dead online
Ha! That's not a bad idea.
My guess is the Final-Fantasy-character-tier leather and buckle number you get at Level 30 Bounty Hunter. It's pretty ridiculous looking.
almost every player over level 100 lmao
@@username-cp5jf lol true they all look straight outta from megadeth concert
I'm thinking those pink pimp coats I see every level 300 in Valentine wearing
I can confirm that having your leather gloves freeze stiff isn't fun
Yeah lol, no fun.
Second that
Yep. Fuck leather in the cold. Flip open wool mittens are the undisputed champs.
I'm pretty sure the Military Scout Hat has seen a major boost in sales since your last few videos. Keep up the great work.
Ha! What can I say? I love it.
Definitely ! Watched his soldier video and fell in love with the campaigning infantry man outfit. Didn’t have the frontier shirt, but the everyday work shirt works just fine as I do suppose the soldiers got a little muddy.
When you said 3 degrees I thought “that’s not that cold” but then I remembered that in the US they use Fahrenheit not Celsius. ❄️
And even then, 3F isn't bad unless it's humid. -20F[-28C] is when staying outside gets miserable. That's only speaking for Western Montana, where we're almost desert dry.
@@ezziba8240 I know that Montana is a cold and mountainous state.

@battz __ not at all, no
As a modern winter cowboy, I'd like to say thank you. I wish Rockstar would put fewer clown clothes in the game and put in more accurate clothing.
I agree. Next outlaw pass I desperately want johns rancher outfit from the first game.
@@Qourie problem?
@@Qourie he just said he likes the outfits, not that they are historically accurate, and not being accurate isn't even that bad, so again...
Wheres the problem?
I just want to say how much I love your videos, the effort you put into them is amazing, keep up the good work!
Thank you, Sombrero!
I really appreciate how you just give a "resume" of historical clothes combinations in the final of your video. It helped me a lot.
Please keep your vids this ways :)
I appreciate the feedback. It really sped things up this time around, so I may keep doing it that way. Just hope it wasn't too fast for folks.
@@ManvsHistory I don’t think it was too fast, it was perfect. I think this is one of your best videos yet, not because of the info, which is always of great quality but the way you did it this time with examples of outfits in every cold scenery. Amazing job! 👍
@@zizouurb6332 Thank you, buddy. I too like that format as well. These outfits look better out in the world, than just standing in a dressing room. Helps to see them in the light, and used in different weather conditions. I'll try and keep doing them this way.
Great for people In Texas rn
Exactly what I was thinking
Fr dude. My power went out rn.
We weren’t prepared for 20 degree weather!!
Same it’s single digit temps and with no power, I’ll need it. Gonna use this vid when my Siri comes back up lmao
Agreed
Stay warm out there, boys!
I think that with whatever the next outfit video is you should give more information on the roleplay aspect, like showing some realistic weapons you could use.
Good call.
@@ManvsHistory also how to live out the lives of the characters so we can take the experience to the next level
Finally a history class I enjoy
Hell Yes!
I love how customizable RDR2 is and how you can design your character on whatever climate your camp is in.
This man has single handedly changed the way I play RDO, All I wish was that we had more outfit slots avaiable to save all my creations!
Ha! Thanks, Oakley! I'm with you on wanting more slots as well!
By watching this video I found out that my outfit was already historically accurate for cold weather, love the videos man.
You're ahead of the game, Alex! Well done!
Same here, I've been using the heavy coat from Gus and sobol hat, I love this combo so it's great to learn that it's historically accurate.
Same bro and I love my outfit
I'm no cowboy here in maine but my preferred cold weather outfit is so fleece lined jeans, a chamois flannel shirt, and either my hardy leather jacket if I'm working or a large wool blanket I wrap around myself if I'm out walking.
As someone living in North Houston rn, I’m taking a few pages of notes
😅😭 South of Austin.
Hang in there! 💪💕
I like the bear coat from gus, just looks a bit too bulky on my character as he's a big dude as it is. Also the colours look abit off, apart from the black one.
I have the average build so it looks good on me but you're right that it looks a bit bulky on other builds
My character is huge and you gotta embrace it embrace the big coat
Let’s gooo, can’t get enough of this channel🍿👏

Thanks, buddy. I appreciate that.
Historically accurate horses used by cowboys in the wild west. Lots of history there 🤠
I wish story mode had more clothing options
Man red dead and your vids got me so interested in the american frontier and I'm not even american. Awesome content!
Since I saw The Hateful Eight I fell in love with the winter cowboy look. Kurt Russell's, Samuel L Jackson's and Channing Tatum's outfits looks incredible in that movie.
Agreed 100%. Kurt Russel made me want to purchase a buffalo coat.
@@ManvsHistory Yeah. Merlin's Hideout made the buffalo coats for the movie. Their coats cost about 3000 dollars or something like that. I would love to own one someday but they are too pricey for me at this moment.
You should make a video about southern style outfits because I spend most my time in lemoyne and it's hard to make an outfit that fits the area.
Seen a bunch of your videos since I got back into Red Dead Online, you definitely need more subscribers for the work you do
Thanks, buddy!
For as long as I can remember, I've always loved the idea of the Northern Old West. I love the idea of Cowboys in snow and cold in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and areas like that. Heck, even the Klondike gold rush in Alaska/Canada in the 1890's still fascinates me to this day. Don't get me wrong, I still love the westerns and stories from the plains and the deserts and places like that, but I always thought the colder northern areas were sort of overlooked because they didn't match with the popular depictions of cowboys and the Old West. I guess this is just my way of thanking you again, Man vs. History for such another amazing video. I'm doing my best to share you with my friends (they loved the buffalo chips episode) because the quality of you content is amazing. So, heres to a warm rest of the winter for you, stay toasty and warm good sir, and I can't wait for the next video!
Thank you, Cameron! I appreciate that, my friend! I'm with you. Growing up I must have watched 'White Fang' 100 times. Fell in love with the Klondike- that mixture of gold & cold. That wilderness of wolves. Even though it wasn't 'The West', I always associated it as part of that story. I recently went back and read every Jack London book I could get my hands on and they spoke to my soul. There's just something about those adventures, the high stakes game of survival, the animals, the weather, the beautiful struggle of it all.
Same, for me being a Jack London fan adds to that. The descriptions of northern snowy parts are mesmerizing.
@@ManvsHistory Yeah my aunts got me Call of the Wild and White Fang when I was little and I was hooked by those books and by London's writing style. It's just such a fascinating time and period that seemed to almost inherit a western feel to it. Plus it's just fun to imagine Rocky Mountains with forests draped in a beautiful layer of snow and ice, with men ranching in their sheep lined jackets or maybe out hunting elk in a buffalo coat.
Historically accurate us cavalry scout
Now I know what should I put on before going to Colter for some fossils.
This is gonna go great with my historically accurate cowboy (besides batwing chaps)
it’s weird how I have a good day every time he uploads. there might be some correlation there
Of course. Don't you know the universe is always working in our favor?!?
Damn you put so much effort into your videos. It’s too bad there is not a proportional audience. I’m glad I can enjoy them
In time, my friend!
The amount of effort and time put in these videos I'd think it would take even longer for them to come out.
Thanks, Demo. I had a window between assignment deadlines/grading, so I was able to churn a quick one out.
You know what I'd love to see?? The historical accuracy of the craftable explosive munitions offered in the game! I've found a little bit, but you're way better at this than I am 💥
I spent a whole 3 hours to get that Bear Fur, and boy was it worth it.
Ha! Nice work, my man!
i’ve been waiting for something like this, looks great! thanks
My winter outfit has so much fur that I could go into a dog show and the judges wouldn't notice a thing!
Black Sobol hat, black pelt-half chaps, silver bear buckle gloves and black Maerbay coat. Also bear saddle and bigpaw saddle bag for horse!
You're liable to get shot by the first bear hunter you come across!
@@ManvsHistory its a risk I'm willing to take in order to stay warm at Colter!

Guess some more outfits will be saved in my wardrobe 😁 I'd love to see some bandits/outlaw/gunslinger outfits in the future
thanks for putting so much effort into these great videos!
I’ve made outfits for all my favorite characters from western movies. I have a decent Dr. King Schultz from Django and a good John Ruth the Hangman from Hateful 8.
Ye he’s my cold weather outfit
I love the hangman!
At 1:44, I said out loud "are you kidding? I pretend my bedroll is my cold weather coat" 😂 they're both blue for that reason. So cool.

The crackling fire in the back is something special
I'm glad you said that... I was really concerned that people might think it's my mic popping or something. Almost re-shot it all because of it.
@@ManvsHistory Haha it was really enjoyable made the video quite relaxing and really enjoyable, great video 👍🏻

You should do a video on just military clothing and equipment! That would be a super cool video keep up the good work man

Seriously, Rockstar and the design team behind the Red Dead series should start to pay more attention to this videos!!! Great work buddy, as always!!! 🤘😎🤘
Thank you, Bruno! Good to see you, my friend!
Thank you for sharing the information. My favorite coat for winter in Red Dead Online is the coat in gus store that can be crafted by a perfect grizzly bear.
Yep, that's the same one. The Maerbay Coat. I love it too.
They really need a "don't feed the bears" sign up there. It would be great! 😂
I love your videos and can see that you put a lot of work into them. I hope you make a video on historically accurate mexican outlaws or vaqueros someday
Is it weird that the main reason I like this channel is because dude always looks like he's chillin' super hard?

I could legit listen to you talk all day long. This stuff intrigued me so much and you do such a great job at explaining everything in detail. Thank you
Thanks, Thomas. I appreciate that!
Have been playing dressed as a lawman and Bass Reaves from your previous video for some time, and now I know what to dress the next time I switch clothes in rdo. Thank you for enhancing my rdo experience!
You bet, buddy! Happy to help!
How about a video on story mode and dressing Arthur realistically/period accurately in the way he most likely would've?
Love these videos! Can you do an episode on historically accurate hair/facial hair? You covered it a bit before but I think it deserves a full episode
If you're going for the cowboy look, mustaches or being clean shaven are safe picks. Beards were a thing, obviously, but most kept their face smooth or whiskered. If your character is more on the rugged or dirty side, i'd recommed maybe the walrus along with the stubble as twirling your mustache requires mustache wax (for most, some peoples staches grow a little in that shape naturally! I'm not sure on how common sideburns or muttonchops were with working men, i have no proper source for this at this instant, but to me it seemed a little more of a slightly fancier style as it'd require more upkeep.
While I've not been directly following these guides, I do keep separate outfits on my horse for snow, host/desert & temperate climes.
Nice, doing awesome on the pace of these uploads, just make sure you don't burn out, love the content too
Thanks, Colin! I just make them when I can, as I know other times I can't. Glad I was able to get these last ones out about two weeks a part, though. Just don't hold me to that pace!

@@ManvsHistory alright cool!
I love this video. I especially love to use the winter outfit during the holiday season in Red Dead. I do want to add that though there are no mittens, the Oscroft Gloves look mighty similar to those Buffalo Fur Mittens when under the jacket. They might have been an Outlaw Pass item, but for those lucky enough to have them, they work. At least to me.
The trimmed bandana is a good substitute for cold weather because it covers your whole face and ears.
