Prince Harry’s decision to give his children titles may have disrupted his father’s vision for the Royal Family, but the King may yet have a trick up his sleeve. That’s the view of Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden. A couple of days after the announcement from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that their children Archie and Lilibet would be known as prince and princess, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Edward would be promoted to the Duke of Edinburgh. The King ‘didn’t intend’ to give the title to his brother as part of his wider plans to ‘slim down the monarchy’, Eden tells our royal talkshow Palace Confidential. ‘But then, when Harry and Meghan started using the Prince and Princess titles for their children, it became clear this wasn’t going to happen and then King Charles could hardly justify not giving Prince Edward the title he’d been promised by their parents,’ he says. ‘It was a big deal and I really think that was behind it.’

All in good time - after the coronation no doubt a considered plan and strategy will unfold, legislatively framed to strip gradually all non working Royals of the privilege of title/s. Note Denmark Sweden & Dutch Royals demonstrating a progressive modernised approach in maintaining relevance by removing titles from grand children previously titled Prince & Princess. In the instance of the British Royals: "The King in time shall giveth & indeed taketh away" in times of economic rationalisation and relevance - that privilege to be seen and enjoyed is duty bound, and must be earned.

But she had to deal with all sorts of family problems too, from Princess Margaret's behaviour to three of her four children divorcing, two of them with loads of scandal attached. Not to mention Philip's regular faux pas, that we laugh at now but not so much at the time. And she didn't always get it right and she wasn't always as loved and admired as she became. In fact, Diana's death and everything around it was a far lower point for the monarchy than the silliness of Harry and Meghan. It just seems different at the moment because Charles is new to it and has lots of decisions to make, but it'll settle down after a bit. So far I think he's doing well!
Difficult lol, Charles is useless, a bad tempered narcissistic brat, an adulterer, as indeed is part of Royal life, they only marry for Heirs, to keep the family going, and a WEF globalist, and I'm sure he'll have many minions running around for him. The Monarch's first duty is to the Crown, the Firm, the institution, and most certainly not their so called subjects. The late Queen served the Crown, the Firm, to keep it relevant.

Andrew has never ever talked badly about the family or monarchy what so ever. He’s misspoken and fell into hard times by his own mistakes. He is loyal to the crown and family. The scandal was not proven 100 percent and although he made a settlement which he was advised to do to make the publicity go away, does not prove guilt. He was like many other celebrities associated with the wrong people that’s all that has been proven.
He made many wrong choices, and still is. This is a very bad look for the RF. How much was given to Prince Andrew to get him out his wrong decisions? This is why this happened to him. You should never reward bad behavior! He is lucky he was not kicked out permanently.
The Queen paid Millons of dollars paid to shut off Andrews accuser ?? That tells you something. A judge in the US just released more court papers, that will be made public in the summer. There are also video's and photos that thee FBI has on hold for now.

As an American, I love your channel as it gives me background on the RF. I have always loved Queen Elizabeth. In fact, when I was confirmed as a small child, we had to choose a Confirmation name after a Saint. I chose Elizabeth, because I loved the Queen and there is also a St. Elizabeth! Duchess of Edinburgh was a title once borne by HM Elizabeth II, so had great meaning for Prince Philip and the Queen. It is a very worthy reward for the non-Royal born Sophie. What a fine, hard working ambassador she is for the RF, country and Commonwealth.

So, it’s right this title goes to the queens son, who she wanted to have it, and is already an extremely visible working royal. AND the title reverts to the crown on Edwards passing- another step towards a slimmed down monarchy.

@@talwaravi I don’t think that they should be allocating funds to them at all. And I don’t think that the monarchy needs more working royals. The pitch was, ‘we are going to reduce spending and cut back the size of the monarchy’. There is growing republican sentiment in the UK and bringing more faces forward, especially those that are not fully perceived as royal family, only garners more support for this movement. I especially don’t think Charles needs to be handing out a lot of titles to new faces if he wants to maintain support. Edward and Sophie have earned this respect and it seems well received by the public thus far. To give such a personal title to a previously fringe couple who have not earned it would have been a slap in the face to E&S and I think would have seen tremendous public backlash.

Wonderful montage of the Duchess of Edinburgh
I've been surprised that many articles have been published about Archie and Lilibet weren't invited to the Coronation. They are 3 and 1, respectively. Are they supposed to get their own separate invitations? I would expect that if Harry and Meghan got an invitation, that should be sufficient. If the kids were adults I could see it, but toddlers? It looks like just another excuse to bash King Charles.
As a grandparent I would not subject any child under 6 to a ceremony of this length. In the case of Archie and Lili, they have not experienced huge crowds. Please do not subject them to this
But I would not be surprised if they were dragged into it, one would assume that nobody in their right mind would boo innocent children.... and their parents lurking in the background (I believe there is a good amount of booing practice going on in certain quarters right now...)
I have seen people bring a screaming child to a wedding, deliberately interrupting the ceremony by refusing to take the child out. M would do that in a minute. Those children are way too young to attend. The Palace was wise to limit the invitation to H & M.
That and the fact that Charles was the only child at his mothers coronation, and that was only because he was the heir to the throne. The only children that would be permitted to go would be Williams children, and even then, likely only Prince George
Just more gossip and rumors to make the Sussexs look like victims once again. We need to stop talking about these ridiculous things, it just keeps their names in the press.
I have to admit that I ‘teared up’ watching the montage of The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh knowing how blessed Queen Elizabeth II found herself in the company of this lovely family. Sofie was present for enjoyable companionship. Their son and daughter are well mannered, industrious and live close to Windsor Castle making them welcome and available for visits with their grandmother. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburghs made themselves available for official service in the name of the Monarchy often. The Queen could depend on them to make her life more enjoyable, without any drama.

even members of the family who live close to Windsor Castle cannot just pop in
when the Monarch is there, appointments have to be made
and Edward and Sophie are available for official service because they are working royals and our late Queen could not always depend on them
and they caused drama
Edward and Sophie wanted to carry on with their careers, but they still used their HRH and performed some royal duties
they were part time royals, it was the first time it had been done and it was a disaster
all but one of Edward's documentaries was about royalty or Palaces, but his company lost money every year
he was always accused of using his royal connections
and he took advantage of being William's uncle
Sophie was set up by a journalist and she said some very indiscreet and disrespectful things
she had to apologise to our Queen, the Prime Minister and to others for her remarks
and our late Queen had a number of Ladies in Waiting whose main role was to provide companionship, who were with her all day

I admit I still get teary when I see a picture of the obviously grieving family at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral service.
Titles: King Charles probably sees examples in other monarchies where royal titles are not automatically given to children: in the Netherlands, the children of Prince Constantijn are earl and countess. The same in Denmark for the children of Prince Joachim; their royal titles have been taken away recently. That's slimming down the monarchy and makes the life of the people that are not closest to the monarch easier.

Why didn’t King Charles amend the letters patent immediately preventing H&M from using those titles? I’m disgusted beyond belief that those two have done this.
Much of what you 'think' he can do, he is NOT allowed to. I'm sure his advisors are VERY aware of what needs to be done. Parliament and Sunak (the PM) move VERY slowly as Sunak is NOT a fan of the monarchy!!

Harry and his son are still fifth and sixth in line to the throne. God forbid William and Kate break the rules and travel together to a catastrophic death heir #1 family. Harry is #2 family to the throne. No matter how much you people hate Harry and Meghan, YOUR REALITY IS THAT HAROLD WILL ALWAYS BE AN HEIR TO THE THRONE, BY BIRTH. THAT CANNOT BE ERASED. King Charles have the custody over these kids now. By the king George I custody law all minor royal children belong to the monarch. So Harry and Meghan can’t do what the want with their kids without talking to Charles first
Charles has no power to do anything. The parliament decides everything. So he agrees to every law the parliament passes. Sunak seems to be a fan of Harry and Meghan. H&M will never lose their titles.

The Duchess of Edinburgh is a beautiful & dignified lady. I think Edward & Sophie are dedicated to their roles within the Royal family and deserve the Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh title.
I think it makes total sense for these Duke and Duchess titles to revert back to the Monarch when the elder passes away unless they are going to be working members of the Royal Family. It is absolutely crazy to have 2nd, 3rd cousins with these titles. I also don't believe that a woman who marries a Prince should get a title like Princess William. By making these titles more exclusive to working members of the family it gives them more meaning.

Thoroughly enjoyed the montage of the new Duchess of Edinburgh! Wow, what a wide variety of works she has contributed to over the years! The most touching photos were the ones where she was with the Late Queen. Kind, genuine and hard-working people are always in short supply, she seems to give an example we can encourage our daughters to emulate.

Hello Everyone! Love your show! Can you address the Sussex village/town circulating petitions to remove Harry and Meghan titles. I read that they have 100,000 signatures so far.
I think the exact opposite happened. Henry found out or knew that Edward was going to get the Duke of Edinborough title and that's when they came up with the scheme to give A&L titles now.

I’ve felt very sorry for him this week. The booing and signs at the commonwealth day must have really upset him, he’s such a kind soul. The protesters hate him because of his green agenda and views on urban planning. He may have to say he no longer supports that thinking, that will shut them up.

I am quite sure the late Queen would have given very strict instruction regarding her will and how things need to be executed sensibly.
The Will will be sealed for 90 years and even then will not detail actual private family matters. Sir Clive and Sir Edward would have taken care of her instructions with the Kings people directly. They key thing was for it to go Monarch to Monarch so not inheritance tax would be incurred
The montage at the end shows SO clearly how heartbroken the whole Royal family were at the Queens death and how callous H+M were to cause so much trouble at that time x Yes H is definitely trying to derail his fathers reign a spoilt spiteful man who never grew up.
Isn’t it going to be interesting to see how Harry does after Meghan leaves him? He will find he has no supporters at all. If Andrew is out in the cold, Brainless, nasty Harry will find he is in a permanent snow stirs. I just cannot see Prince William giving his brother any concessions after all the damage he quite deliberately set out to do to the family, the monarchy and the country.

American here, the Sussex parents wanted Lilibet know as Lili. The Queen wasn’t keen of her pet name being used so would you please call the American child 'Lili'. Also has the King met either one of these children? Why give titles to a child you haven’t met in person? About time the DoE title bestowed to Edward.

As you are an American, you don't get why we are angry about that. When Harry told the queen they would be using her name for their daughter, SHE thought they meant 'Elizabeth', NOT Lillibet. That was a nickname given her by her father, King George VI. Prince Phillip also adopted it after he became involved with the queen. We object to the child being NAMED Lillibet ENTIRELY!!

The title Princess was not in King Charles power to give or refuse. The current law says as the blood granddaughter of the monarch she is entitled and only her parents can choose to not have them, as Anne and Edward did. On the name , the Queen did give permission and had met the children, it was said that she was pleased they weren’t like American children
As an American I’m confused if Harry is the Duke of Sussex, what has Harry done for the Sussex region. As far as I know, he’s never visited Sussex.
