What makes the "cedar patern" different to produce sound? Why not use other patterns, say just simple straight lines to make it easier curbing the wood?
Made in Japan
I am a Canadian luthier and I love watching the work of luthiers of other cultures.
Ahh, a fellow Canuck eh! I also make guitars (more of a hobby, than a profession). I’ve built about 20 guitars and 17 of them ended up in the fireplace! …LOL… :)

I watch a lot of Japanese wood and medal craftsmen and I'm blown away by the attention to detail in everything they do.
The Koto is not actually a harp, but a zither. The main acoustical wood that it is made from is called Kiri in Japanese; in English it is called Paulownia wood, and is from the Princess Tree, Paulownia tomentosa. Being a very soft wood, Paulownia wood is also sometimes called, "the other Balsa" It is used for making many East Asian stringed instruments besides the Koto.
Dohmo, arigatou gozaimasu!
Is He Hardening the wood with the surface burning or is that a way of "staining"?.
@@urbannpa I am no expert on Koto making by any means, but my guess is that it is done primarily for aesthetic coloring / staining purposes, and that secondarily it might also have an effect on the sound as well. I don't think that it is a means of hardening the wood. Many other acoustical woods used in musical instrument making, particularly those that are used for the soundboards of guitars and other stringed instruments, are quite soft. What do you say about that, Japanese Industry? Anata no iken wa nandesuka?
It colours the wood, brings out the contrast between the early and late season grains, and burns off any loose fibres of wood on the surface.
YOU'RE a zither, not a harp.

That was an amazing video. Thank you for sharing. I am an arborist, I am pruning a paulownia next week! I also studied music and play a stringed instrument, interest on all fronts! Beautiful craftsmanship.
Amazing craftsmanship. A salute to the artisans who made this beautiful instrument.
Wonderfully beautiful. Thank you for your kindness and sharing.😊
Imagine at his age he can still manage to make that art wow your truly an artist you deserve to be awarded
Simply Amazing. Bravo.
Thank you 😮
I love Kotos. They sound amazing and so does the traditional music. I've always been interested in how they were made so I'm glad youtube recommended me the video!
I hope there are some in the younger generation who will carry on this art into the future. I would hate for any of this to be forgotten.
What an amazing process by AMAZING CRAFTSMEN!!!!! Thank you for posting such a wonderful and interesting video. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Beautiful workmanship !!!
Just beautiful work 👍🥰
Excellent craftsmanship and very fine details. I love the way they work with woods and their fine details they make. The old man looks like he has been doing this for a long time and has excellent skills.
Yes .... He seems to be getting the hang of it .........
After seeing how much work goes into the production it is easy to see why they are expensive. I am still playing my koto that I bought almost 50 years ago.
So just barely “broken in!” …LOL… I bet it is sounding a lot more mellow with age. :) Someday, I hope I will be able to afford one.
Top level Nihon craftsmanship...
Never ceases to amaze me.
EDIT: Subscribed.
Its Nipon not Nihon. I am literally an expert in everything Nipon. Soon I am going to live there and work as a famous Voice Actor doing American dubs for Anime.
@@Wooargh Proper spelling is Nippon.
Beautiful job making it sir
Beautiful craftsmanship
Amazing craftsmanship. Such a pleasure to watch and very relaxing, reduces stress. We must appreciate Masters such as this man, dedicated his life to preserve and pass on this almost lost art.
May you be at peace kind Sir. 🙏
From the beautiful to the sublime, as always with Japanese art.
Thank you so much for sharing this superb harp. The Sho Sugi Ban method surprised me here, but when then polisher came in I understood things better.
From California..thank you, sirs, for sharing your beautiful craftsmanship with us. 🥰🙏
awesome craft! thanks
Beautiful craftmanship in dying country.
Watching the masters construct this beautiful instrument, so full of tradition is really a great experience.
The way the burning-and-burnishing process brings out the wood grain is amazing. What beautiful instruments -- they must be played only by the best of the best.
Beautiful work.
Wonderful work ❤❤
Would've enjoyed a step by step breakdown of the build showing each part in its entirety.
Nothing more satisfying to me than watching an elder craftsman at work.
Beautiful to see how this is made
the wood burning is so satisfying to watch
Great video!!!
Dois homens profissionais de grande valor
Beautiful, artistic and melodic! What a skill and what an instrument!
This is "koto"
Such amazing work! I wonder what purpose that herringbone type pattern that he chiselled into the inside serves? Some sort of diffusion or something? And how did they figure out that needed to be done? Crazy cool stuff, thanks for sharing!
Wau !.😊 Fantastic work
That was absolutely fantastic! The level of beauty and craftsmanship is awesome! If I ever win the lottery, I will be adding one of these to my instrument collection.
❤ from 🇨🇦 :)
A very clever man indeed 👌

Spiffing work !
I admire the Japanese workers for their knowledge and attention to detail. The western world are slowly realising how the Japanese way of woodwork with their tool design is far more efficient.
He, the master, is like a machine of perfection. Just look at the zigzag embossed patterns in the hollow bed of the instrument. There is no equal. Hats off Sir!
1. I am in awe of these men and their craftsmanship. 2. If I tried to do it I would have either cut off several of my fingers or accidentally burnt the whole place down and 3. I don't play it but I want one just because it is so beautiful! Loved it.
Concert Grade 13 string is $3000 to $6000. And you can buy one online.
Amazing. Totally sounds like an instrument from one of those Asian movies. 😮
Dang that is some dedication to the craft.
Tremendo. Siempre nos japoneses nos sorprenden. Aquí desde Perú saludos.
This makes me want to go to their red light District👍🏻
OS HOMENS SÃO UNS ARTISTAS 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I don't understand the function of the herringbone pattern on the *inside* of the harp? That looked like excruciating work, and one slip with the chisel would be a disaster - yet it is completely hidden inside??
Maybe its just for improve the sound of the instrument
He is so good artisan I guess, I pay his skill won't be a lost technology in the future.
Very similar process to make a Chinese seven string Luther
I'll have to look at mine a bit closer. I never noticed the details of the instrument.
Asian planes and saws cut backwards, much easier to control the work object using the body mass.
If you have any more information, or can direct me to a good source, on the polish and tool they were using, I would greatly appreciate it. Always looking for interesting and sustainable ways to finish wood projects. Thank you.
Fascinante video
Good

Why does watching every craftsmen in Japan!, make you want to pack your bags and become the new apprentice.
Yup, I’m 54 from Canada and I would drop everything to make these craftsmen their coffee! :)
@@Iam_Dunn In all seriousness, we can make that happen! I know Fujii-san and he's worried about who's going to continue the legacy of koto craftsmanship in Fukuyama.

I play the koto, but I've never once even looked into how they're made.
That chisel at 12:50...
Same dimension strings and floating bridges (nut´s)?
