  • It takes at least 18 months to make a Guqin, a 7-stringed zither that dates back over 3,000 years.
    The process has more than 100 steps, including crushing pearls and gemstones and mix them with raw lacquer.
    The instrument has been hailed as the "father of Chinese music."

    Everyone praises the song of the instrument, but not who made it. This is such a beautiful art, making ancient instruments like these. The song is beautiful because the person who made the instrument put all their effort on it, all their love. Being able to create these kind of instruments is an art just as beautiful as the person who is able to plays it!

    I can’t decide between getting one of these or an erhu. Of course my ultimate goal is to have both, but which one should I start with?

    • @eunoki5092
      @eunoki5092 Před 2 lety +1

      If ultimately your goal is to have both and you don’t have musical background with chinese intrustments, then maybe you can start with Erhu, you can get a sense of the music rhythms and the Chinese scores are easier to read for erhu. For Gu Qing the notation are abit more complex.

      The making process is requires experience. Require certain types of aged wood to make the gu Qing. Especially the thickness of the wood affects the sound. Masters take many years to learn to make.

    • @lunchbox1553
      @lunchbox1553 Před rokem +1

      @@eunoki5092 Ah, but you don't need to be a master to try. And, you don't need specific types of aged wood, that is simply how it has been done. You could make one out of plastic or metal if you really wanted to. It would change the texture of the sound, but the instrument would still be a Guqing. It is why plastic instruments exist, they're for beginners that don't want to invest too much into a good quality instrument before knowing if they want to play for real or not.

    How much does such an instrument cost?

    • @eunoki5092
      @eunoki5092 Před 2 lety

      It depends. It can range from a few hundred to a few thousands. Probably $300-$5000 and more (exquisites kind made from certain masters) but it’s important to buy those made from pure lacquer as I hear the cheaper certain “mass produced” done use pure lacquer on their Qing.

    18 months? huh?

    • @lunchbox1553
      @lunchbox1553 Před rokem

      Most instruments made by hand by craftsmen take about as long. And also remember that they are making multiple at a time, it is not like they are spending 18 whole months on a single instrument.
