About 7 months ago, we left our last long-term home in Mexico, Puerto Morelos. Since then, we've been traveling all over Mexico looking for another city to call home. We're happy to share that Queretaro, Mexico is that city! Today we'll be outlining:
- Why we chose to sign a 1-year lease in Queretaro, Mexico
- What the process of finding a rental in Mexico is like in 2021
- How house hunting in Mexico is different than in the US
- Where to look for rentals in Mexico
- What it was like getting an insurance policy for renting
- The risky mistakes we made while moving to Queretaro and how you can avoid them

During this process, we had to figure out how to transfer money internationally for the first time and used TransferWise (now "Wise"). Dang, I wish we had signed up for that sooner! 😅 We definitely recommend it. You can get your first transfer free with our referral link: wise.com/invite/u/jordanr623
Maybe you'll make back in savings using Wise -the amount of money you had to fork over for the insurance and the deposit (eventually) from the savings you'll realize not having to pay such high exchange fees. [It sounds like Monica is worth her weight in gold.]
The best question.
For what you guys were looking at what is the average price for a long term rental on the monthly
Congrats for moving to Querétaro! I wish you all the best for your new home, bread and salt from me.
I thought your go-to was a Charles Schwab account, what happened with that? thanks, and congrats to you and your new home! cheers! xox
Yes please...driver and real estate agent contact info. Fantastic video and congratulations!!
Ja.. so funny seeing my hometown from the point of view of a foreign person... sometimes when you live here you forget how nice it is.... and focus only on the small problems, but seeing your two videos... I was like...wow!... what a nice place....and.. wait... I live here!..jajaja.... Welcome to Queretaro.
i know, just a few years ago i realized, wait a minute this city is soo cool, I mean we have lot of nature lot of industry lot of culture and cool places and the most important a very comfortable pacefull life.
And Queretaro now has HEB grocery store (San Antonio chain) a game changer!
Sold …HEB ..I am from Tex so that seals the deal for me 😊
Probably the last thing that would seal a deal for me. I've not been to a HEB in Mexico, but unless they can really compete with City Market or Chedraui Select, I don't hold out hope.
Congrats on the move! Queretaro looks like a very nice spot to live.
hi new traveler love your videos
@@stephenbradford7936 it is wonderful, go to the city, you will love it.
With the new bullet train from Querétaro to Mexico City the city will grow even more.
Been watching your videos like for 3 years, so cool that you are gonna live in my city now
Welcome! :)
Thanks for being a long-time Tangeriney! Yay for Queretaro :)
It’s where me and my wife have talked about moving to. It’s actually her birth city and her dad has recommended it to us.
You two are just “weird” enough to be charmingly authentic! Love you guys as a couple. “Tree frog”-you crack me up! I am pleased it is all working out for you. I hope you both will be very happy in your new home!
Thanks so much, Ash! I thought that tree frog pose was hilarious and wish she would've done the whole clip like that!
This comment didn't age well.😅 but they are happy now
Wow Monica seems an Angel on earth just for you ! That’s awesome !! I am a Mexican grandma living in the US, I feel very proud that you found a nice place to live in my country and all the good things you share about it with the world ! Enjoy your life in Mexico, my best wishes and blessings for you, Luvya both ! ❣️❣️❣️🥰🥰🥰🌷🌷🌷
Welcome to Queretaro! My wife and I have lived here for over a year. We bought a home in centro histórico that we’re having remodeled. Monica was also crucial in buying our home. Hers was the best customer service I’ve ever experienced. Good luck. I hope you’re very happy here.
Thank you Billy!
Tell me more.....,my wife Rosario from Aguas Caliente wants us to move to Mexico......this sounds good. Who do I need to speak to.
@@edwinvonborstel3405 I heard Aguascalientes is a very nice living city isn't?
@@strongtowerman9661 I've been there to visit it seems the area has a lot of poor regions so I don't know really I'm not one to be able to give a good opinion there
@@edwinvonborstel3405 maybe you went to the outskirts of the city. Central part looks beautiful and specialy the north side. A lot of wealth with all the big maga factories.
So happy for you two! We retired and have lived in Morelia for 8 years. We really love it and the expat community is rapidly growing. But, if we ever have to move, we will head to Queretaro. Actually, the weather in Morelia is a bit cooler and I am very sensitive to heat. We love having our windows open to the fresh air and being comfortable outdoors most of the year, so we very rarely run our window A/C units. Queretaro is a bit more arid and tends to get a little hotter during the warm season than Morelia at 6600 feet. We are from Texas and we wanted to be far removed from extreme (105+ F) heat in the summer, late June to August, or even early September, and also avoid brutal cold and ice, at times, like in the DFW area of Texas. You being from Arizona well know the drill. Plus, one is about 2.5 hours closer to the border at Laredo, than in Morelia, and that would be ideal for us driving back to see family and friends. And, who doesn't love the amenities in Qro. Enjoy your new digs! Yay!
Yay! Hope your home is always happy, but in any case, always home.
Love this! Thanks Ron
Enjoy, guys! It will be fun buying furniture. I didn't think about appliances, though! It's a good thing you can resell at the end
Yes- would like to see all about the process of buying furniture, etc...
Congrats on your new place!
Welcome guys 😊
Would like to see more shopping videos too-not at Costco but check out the "pulgas mexicanas" .
From a Mexican, thank you for promoting Mexico this way, I like to see my country from the foreign pov and seeing you like my country and show what Hollywood doesn't about Mexico
Awesome! I’m in San Miguel de Allende! Welcome to the beautiful mountains!
We were recently visiting Queretaro and hired Ruben Lima for a day trip to Bernal and Tequisquiapan. Thanks so much for the recommendation! He was not only a great driver and tour guide but also an overall wonderful person to spend the day with. :)
Wow!!! What an experience!! Maddie you look so happy and healthy .... your stress over the last year had you not looking so well...happy to see you two found a home for Laska!!...Viv
Woo Hoo! I am so glad you chose Queretaro! My husband and I are visiting next March for a month with an eye toward a longer term stay. I have been researching places to live from home in Ohio and came to the same conclusion! I am so happy for you! Looking forward to more of your videos!
You guys continue to amaze me with not only your intuition on providing incredibly valuable information but the giant steps you make in your production and presentation chops. So, so excellent. Thank you so much for what you do, I wish you all the best in your new pad. Stay safe be healthy and big hugs to you.
That was a really interesting video about the formalities of renting there. As an aside, I ended up purchasing a condominium in Playa del Carmen and went through a lot of procedures similar to your rental experience and when I sold my property and decided to leave the country for good, the government tried to do a $12,000 cash grab, which apparently is normal if you've owned a property there and leave the country. If I didn't have an excellent lawyer they definitely would have received this 'parting gift' from me on the way out the door. I suppose the short version is it's great to have a good, knowledgeable realtor or lawyer on your side.
@Galleta de Soda good question. Truthfully I originally wanted to settle in Merida, I placed an offer on a beautiful condo there but it fell through. I ended up settling in Playa because I thought it might be the best place to purchase if decided that I wasn't happy there and wanted to resell my place. The short version is that I was on my own and three and a half years in Playa seemed like enough, in retrospect I should have purchased on Isla Mujeres, I know people on the island and it has a much more relaxed vibe there. I found Playa to be too transient, far too touristic.
@Galleta de Soda I'm jealous, I lived in Venice Beach on the canals for 10 years, I miss it down there. I didn't want to go to negative but what I'm not saying is that it was really sketchy in Playa with the tourists coming and going as well.
Welcome to Queretaro. I am originally from Ohio and have been living and working in Mexico for the past 17 years. I now live in Queretaro (I am an automation engineer). Let me know if you need any help - I am fluent in Spanish.
Pretty funny (well, not for you guys) about the ringer you were put through. In all of my years, I never have had to get insurance (fianza) for a rental. And I have NEVER lived in tourist area. Kinda confused about why you guys had to go that route.
Disclaimer: what I am about say is pure speculation... I have seen where fixers create problems that are then "solved." Not saying that Monica did this, but it does happen in Mexico. Would be interesting to know how much the Fianza cost you. Remember (and live by) the Mexican saying, "¡Piensas mal y acerterás!" I learned to "pensar mal" pretty soon after arriving here.
Also good to see you guys getting the true taste of Mexico - bureaucratic as HELL. Just love their paperwork (tramites) and lines - notarial versus common law legal system. Are you planning on registering your car in Queretaro (I would recommend it)? How about drivers licenses? That will be fun.
Living in Mexico is so different than visiting or "retiring." Very different; especially if you work or have a family. Big hassles for just about everything. But, I found a wonderful wife, have a beautifil family and great friends. I guess some things you just have to put up with.
Any way.... Welcome again! Hope you enjoy your stay.
Hello. I just stumbled upon your message. I have had plans to move to Querétaro for some months. I am making repairs to my house to sell it within the next couple of months. Would you be willing to send me the names of realtors who might be able to help me find a piece of land to put a small house on for me and my pets? Thank you.
I'm fed up with United States and the liberal lifestyle I'm conservative family oriented and would love to move to Mexico and give my money to this country the town sounds great my wife's from Mexico what do I do to move there and retire
@@cshula1 Good morning. Sorry for my delay in responding. I have never used a realtor. My method of finding a proprety is to determine where I would like to live or rent and then go in my car and look for "for sale" or "for rent." Then I talk to my friends.
It is difficult to explain, but the types of services that require databases (i.e. MLS, Zillow) and tansparency (with repect to information) just do not work in Mexico. For example, just try to find a website or app where you can look up average home prices by zip code, overlay crime statistics, check school district (completely different topiC - Arggh!!!!) and determine mortgage including taxes - Good Luck. In MY OPINION, these type of services are at best pale facsimiles to what you are accustomed to; at worst, they involve con artists aping US business practices in an attempt to gain the confidence of their victims - much more common in tourist destinations.
Also, I should warn you against buying land in Mexico. This endeavor is fraught with danger. Clear land title is an issue and someone who knows more than me could write a book about it.
I would recommend that you first find a locale that you like and rent and get WhatsApp. Then become fluent in the language and culture. Befriend actual Mexicans (super easy) and ask for help- a quick I have know my friends for more than 5 years. These informal networks are the way to go. I understand that is the reason you want a realtor, but to me it is just too much a leap of faith to get advice from some random person on the internet. A Mexican friend would be the better route. Just too much much money at stake.
Another point to remember is to be prepared to pay cash or have US financing. Financing in Mexico can be a bitch.
Finally, remember "piensas mal y acerterás." Until you fully understand this phrase, speak fluent Spanish, and have Mexican friends please rent.
@@edwinvonborstel3405 Hello Edwin, I had written a longer response but I accidently opened another site and lost what I had written.
If your wife is from Mexico... ya estás del otro lado. I am sure that she will give you great information. Personally and, IN MY OPINION, Mexico is not truly family-oriented in the way that I was brought up (Conservative Midwestern).
However, the manner in which you raise your family should not change depending on where you live. Sure it can be easier or harder depending on the society in which you live - shared norms, attitudes, beliefs, etc. I can honestly say, that is has been very difficult for me - I have felt zero support. I do believe that if you are culturally conservtive you will have issues in Mexico. Much like the US in its current incarnation.
I am seeing "Wokeness / SJW" along with 4th wave feminism. A fairly toxic cocktail for conservative family values - i.e. the tyrannical patriarchy.
Might I recommend moving to a conservtive state and purchasing a lot land. I believe the end result will be the same, but you will have more rights (guns to defend your family, extracting water, etc.), higher probability in the application of the rule of law, a cleaner / less denuded environment, and social stability. Just my take.
Finally, just rememer that Mexico and its citizens are like people form any other country - they want to project the best image and portray their country in the best light possible. Just be prepared.
I am sharing my perspective with you not to dissuade you from moving here - the more the merrier. I just trying to help inform your decision. For me, at least, the key to happines is keeping my expectations in line with reality.
@@michaeldowdell2005 are these the attitudes of the expats that are moving to your town or is it the actual Hispanic population because most of the population are from what I've seen are Catholic and conservative and I'm basically conservative
Glad you found Monica! She's great! I just left Queretaro a few months ago after 2 years there because I met her too late to help with my rentals. I left because I had too many rental headaches and moved on to Puebla where rentals are more normal. But I left telling Monica basically: "Ugh! I can tell you're great to work with and I wish I would have met you sooner!" Everyone I point to her has been happy. Queretaro was a very cool city despite the rental drama and I met some great friends there! Enjoy it!
Thank you Mel! I am glad we met at some point and have your friendship which I appreciate a lot. Hugs to you and your doggies.
So much excellent information!
Thank you! And smart of you to draw the line at messing up your new-found home by putting its whereabouts on the interwebs!!
ENJOY furnishing and living in your new home!
You cant share your rent cost? It would be very helpful to have an estimate of costs there for anyone considering moving there.
That process elevated my blood pressure ...
Well done video , if I ever end up retiring/living in Mexico, you have made this a very tempting destination/final destination...
Welcome to Querétaro, I know you will enjoy the city!
Welcome to Querétaro, we’ll be very happy to have you here, we hope don’t hate the people, not all are so friendly, but the city is worth it 👍🏼
¡Felicidades on Your New Home! When I initially moved to GDL, I was looking for furnished apartments, but fell in love with an unfurnished space in El Centro. I was advised that shopping for furniture at the Bazaars would be easy and affordable..and it was. I also ended up having furniture CUSTOM MADE in Tonala for prices much cheaper than furniture stores! I don't regret the investment and have since moved to a different area of Mexico with the furniture I'd bought previous...and it fits in the new space as well! Cheers to new beginnings you two. Looking forward to an apartment reveal in the future : )
Glad you found such good people to help you and that everything is working out. Now, with the good internet, it would be a treat to visit with you live, again.
Would love to know more about furniture shopping, appliances, etc. Thanks so much for your videos they’re super helpful!

Congratulations on your new home! I love Queretaro - Found some great places to eat and hang out. Looks like you are finding some too!
Oh... Queretaro! Glad we share more in common!! I've been acquiring pieces of jointed land near Santa Rosa Jauregui, (known for its carnitas just northeast of Juriquilla), for 15 years now, preparing to retire in 3 more years. Plan the hotter days up in the north-northeastern hills with many natural swimming holes to jump into.
Congratulations on your new home!!!! And thanks for the Transfer Wise tip, I’ll definitely use your link to sign up!

Actually Querétaro is the most touristic city in México, except for beach places. Is full of a lot of tourist but obviously if you are in Mexico you’re supposed to speak Spanish and tourist learn Spanish, but many people in Querétaro speak English of course. Really nice city to live in!!
Eso no es cierto señora, el lugar mas visitado y turístico de México es la ciudad de México, seguido de Cancún y Chichenitza. Querétaro no entra ni en el top 10. No mienta por convivir.

Based on your last video if I ever got to come back to Mexico I was seriously considering Querétaro, although I would miss Lake Chapala, but after watching this video it's off my list for sure. When I first came to Mexico I rented a great apartment while still in Canada, then rented another apartment in Riberas del Pillar through a Realtor, none of which involved the insane process you guys went through. Many things in Mexico can be complicated, but this renting a place takes the cake. Monica has the best job security of anybody in Mexico because no one could go through this without her.
Agree what a nightmare!!
I totally agree
is Insane !! Monica ? not sure about her , with so many places to choose from she probably new about this bs and ignore it completely she gets a b - from me

Welcome to Queretaro 🥰🥰
Congratulations! My wife and I live in South Texas and are close to retirement. We have traveled quite a bit to Mexico in the last 3 years and are trying to decide weather to move to Mexico or Thailand. Your videos inspire us. Maybe we’ll see you in Queretaro.
Thailand is a wonderful country but is very close to China, which can be a problem because China has built dams to control the water source of the Mekong River and divert the water for China’s own agriculture purpose. This behavior is already causing international dispute. Additionally, the Thai government has an unfriendly retirement visa program that requires you to check in with an immigration office every ninety days plus limiting your housing purchase option to condo only. Also, Thai language is hard to understand. To make the matter worse, nationalism is becoming more and more prevalent in Thailand as life is getting harder for the regular folks in Thailand during the pandemic. However, Thailand is great for visit but for building your retirement life, Mexico is easier, friendlier, and Spanish is very doable if you put your mind to it. Not to mention it is so close to the US that you can visit your grand children frequently.
