I have spent a little time in Guadalajara and the surrounding area. I thought it would be great to move to Mexico now that we're retired, so, I've been trying to convince my wife that it would be a great move for us. Sadly though, from the looks of some the recent "Actual cost to live in Mexico" videos we've seen, it looks like the prospect of moving is dwindling. If we could have moved 2 - 5 years ago we'd be sitting pretty. Now, however, it's looking like the cost of living there isn't so much better than here in the States. I had budgeted between $1000 to $1200 per month for housing. I'm not sure that would be enough now.

Sounds like mexicans feel the same way as Americans do. Mexicans are upset that legal American residents are ruining their country. Americans feel illegal residents are destroying their country. Maybe you should just swap. All illegals go back to Mexico. All Americans go back to America. Problem solved.

If you’re mexican-american get off these videos just have your parents claim you in a mexican consulate. At least 1 parent has to be a Mexican national and that’s pretty much it you now hold a mexcan passport.

Choosing the "most lenient Consulate" for the process is not alwaya possible. My Consulate in Ventura, CA required the applicant to reside in that particular County to access the service.

You can send yourself XOOM, and pick up cash at any Walmart. But only taking $400 or less, just use an ATM and decline any conversion fees.

Mexican consulates don't use UMA, which is about half of Minimum wage... Exchange rates fluctuate between 16~24, so does Financial requirement. Wish they start using UMA in the future, if not, Mexican Residency will be impossoble for most of American Retirees.

It's funny how tourist was never a problem to the Mexican economy when they visited Mexico for countless decades spending billions of dollars supporting the local Mexican vendors, laborers and Mexican businesses; however, now that the Mexican minimum wage has increased by 20 percent, and that the Mexican GDP has risen, foreigners are suddenly now considered no longer useful. It's funny how the world works. Don't worry, now that Mexico has made it nearly impossible for foreigners to obtain a temporary or permanent visa with their ridiculously high solvency requirement, sooner vs later it will backfire on the Mexican economy once hyper-inflation sets in. However, fret not, because foreigner are looking else where to countries such as Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia to spend their Euros, and Dollars. Besides, Panama offers a Pensionado Visa that requires the applicant to only prove that they earn $1000 per month solvency from a pension. Panama also offer many more visa options than Mexico. I guess you can always tell which countries really values their residence and visitors by their visa programs and unfortunately, Mexico has shown it's true colors. The moral of the story: There are safer more affordable options than Mexico at this point in time
