It's a damn shame just how much of a missed opportunity this movie was.
The idea of teenage pilots... isn't NECESSARILY bad, if they actually tried to show more of how their incompetence impacted the situation. It's painfully clear they weren't trained enough, nor experienced enough to take on challenges like these, but if they're all you got, you'd hope there'd be a bit more guidance from other characters that we already know.
That, combined with how much of the damage both kaijus and jaegers take is superficial; there's no lasting dents, no serious structural loss... compared that to Pacific Rim 1; almost every single blow left a dent that you could see in a later scene, or just straight up *removed* bodyparts.
The fact that each strike has a seemingly random amount of force behind it, and said force doesn't actually damage either jaeger nor kaiju, just makes the combat feel floaty, stylish, but weak.
Don't forget that these are kids who've never been in combat; they've never seen destruction besides in training videos; they've barely hit puberty. And for some reason, there's no sign of stress or strain from seeing one of the largest cities in the world (Tokyo), a symbol of human culture and society, and very likely thousands of civilians be crushed and turned into blobs of red goo. No trauma, no nothing, just pew pew ooo guns and swords (mainly feet) go blam blam pew.
The teenagers really ruined it for me. The cocky attitude, lack of training and much like Zanger said really just lack of emotion. The fighting scenes are amazing regardless, but it just misses all of what the first movie had. Jaeger pilots died valiantly and heroically in PR1, where as here they die from just simple incompetence. Sad to see this is the direction the movie went.
They should have watched and took notes from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Think about this, then go rewatch the Hollywood Godzilla trilogy... If anything, it's worse.

IKR? Until the things fused and got their upgrade the jaegers easily caused more damage than the kaijus.
I think the point here is to be more realistic. Fighting in such a cramped area using giant fighting robots will definitely cause some damage on the surroundings. It would be much more weird and laughable if in all the fights with these monsters only a few buildings will be damaged. Imagine only three or five infrastructures were destroyed after all the chaos and a few strip of road crumbled despite the number combatants in the area...
P.S. 2:55 this part however I think is being careless. Who knows there could be people inside those buildings and they used it as such. Wow so much for saving the city and its inhabitants...

Yeah good point, except in the original, they actually did try to minimize casualties whenever they could, stepping over bridges and trying their hardest not to destroy any of the buildings. in the original, even though it was futile they still tried to prevent as much possible damage, while here they just don’t care and in fact they even use the city to cause damage. It wouldn’t really matter, were it not for the fact that the original had already made sure this was part of the continuity. So the fact that the second movie throws all of this away just adds to the bitter taste.

Basically, the original had the pilots try their hardest to minimize damage, and yet a lot damage is caused anyway because that’s what’s expected from a massive beast fighting a massive robot. That’s what made it so realistic, whereas here nobody even cares, even using the buildings they were supposed to protect to kill the Kaiju.

To make it more to the films story it could have just made a giant sink hole and made the jaegers fall in there

It’s funny how the orange jaeger had two swords that can easily pierce through buildings. Yet the only, ONLY time it was used was at the start when the swords were unsheathed, destroying the two buildings surrounding the jaeger.
I always found it funny in the second movie there is zero attempt to prevent collateral damage 😂 theyre like screw the city, we fighting monsters here

Tokyo Learned from it's mistakes, first cause it was discovered kaijus were heading towards mount fuji, so tokyo started evacuating hours before they came, second, the city probably has bunkers shattered around everywhere, with tunnels heading outside the city.
Fun fact: In the novelization, Newt actually calls up the PPDC to taunt them and Hermann tries to talk some sense into him but fails. I wish we had that scene in this movie because it really felt Charlie Day was having a blast playing evil!Newt.

When I look at it now I see that the VFX team did the best they could and the reason this doesn't feel as heavy and real as the first movie is mostly the choreography, like that one robot bounced off a building as if it was a human from a wall, but we saw those robots crush through buildings so it would not take the force of the bounce. Also they literary don't even try to limit damage
yes, it still all falls down to the director. the reason the first one is successful was because guillermo del toro is so passionate on this project that he built a constant communication with the Standford Studio (now Legacy Studio) when it comes to the design of the con pods, the suits, and how the robots are rendered down to the last detail. he's present in every field of the production. Uprising failed it that, and it shows. They left everything to the VFX team.
I was expecting the ending that they would fuse the robots by fighting the fused Kaijus, my disappointment is imeasurable and my day is ruined

What sucks about this movie is that compared to the og film, is that the first film's jaegers tried their best to lessen the destruction as much as possible. Here they literally use buildings, step on buildings and cause even more destruction. Like I get that people retreated underground, but still.
Its likely not everybody got underground and could have even been still in the buildings. That Jaeger most likely killed quite a few people with that knock off physics gun.

remembered seeing this movie when it premiered, I thought it was pretty good, then I realised more and more how it never reached my actual expectations after so many times rewatching it.

Yeah, watching the veterans fight with all seriousness is entertaining. I mean, even though Chuck was an asshole, he still took the job very seriously and professionally. Watching the kids screwing around when the world was at stake is fucking irritating. I was literally screaming "FINISH THE JOB YOU FUCKING MORONS" in the head during that scene.

As bad as this movie might be, that is one of the most powerful sound moments in movie history for me.

First movie was much more "believable" to me.
That phase, when pilots getting geared up, "drift" and launched in the jager. The interface looks more "realistic" than in second movie, as are action scenes.

It's too bad that Uprising wasn't as good as the first one, in my opinion. To be completely honest, the action sequences were the only thing that I liked about it
That’s the only thing I look for in these movies which is why I like both.
The "threat" didn't feel as scary as the first one. And it also got less serious with the jabs of "comedy".

Material dan special effect were awesome. But the detail of the sequences were weak. Compared to the 1st one, in term of motion, this one lack sense of weight. More like fast pace fighting small autobots. Also this one, lacking in the detail of jeager's operational especially on its last battle.
Tho these are not bad cgi, it just they didn't suit well for a mecha's fight of that size. Still room for improvement & adjustment. Tho the 1st movie still the best.

well, the guy with glasses that is a scientist dude, i mean, they aren't real pilots too, their just... cadets, OH- and, the real pilots are either dead or injured, like the ones in Valor Omega, the head got ripped off and the pilots might have gotten alot of injuries, like bones cracked, organs wounded, etc etc
That first minute and 15 seconds was the most epic part of the entire movie, hands down.

My problem with the movie was the way they tackled these Kaiju's. They spent more time fighting instead of trying to kill these monsters and ended up causing more damage to the city even though it kinda made it more interesting
Kinda something with first for some fights as well so I don’t see a problem
Um they WERE trying to kill the kaiju and vice versa but of course due to the pilots mostly being inexperienced and the fight essentially being a 4 vs 3 both sides were having trouble killing off one another. One side had inexperienced fighters while the other was outnumbered a bit.

@@streakydanco True but even then like raleigh said a jaeger is only as good as their pilots. If the pilots are inexperienced teenagers then the weapons will not be used to good use. Those weapons could of been amazing close and long range weapons that could of put the kaiju down for good but if used improperly (which obviously happened) those weapons would be useless in all regards which is why literally each weapon did nothing to the kaiju or mega kaiju

If they ever make a third movie it would be hilarious if they mention how some Jaeger pilots take bribes from companies to help with insurance scams, hence why they seem to purposefully destroy buldings.

As much as I love Universal, unfortunately this movie was questionable for me. Some scenes were predictable like a certain characters death. I'm not the biggest fan of WB anymore, but the first one was indeed very better.

@DSW22 I saw the first one so many times and it's awesome.
Graphicly very impressive, but carries so little weight and emotion! The buildings feel weak. they crumble or get pass through with the slightest touches. It feels fake and weightless compared to what it should be. Not because of the quality of the rendering, but for the lack of physics. All that is good is CGI, but the moves, the weapons, the masses, the scale and power of this things are very poorly staged and shown. And don't get me started on all the cuts in the edition!

The creator of pacific rim said the 3rd movie was going to head to merging into the monsterverse. So this is not my wishful thinking there no plan for a 3rd film yet. However if or when they do that is where they are heading.
