  • In this video I unbox and build my new Orbea D30 1X. It is really exciting getting a new bike and it is important to make sure it is set up correctly and fully road worthy before taking it out riding. I will talk through important steps in preparing your new bike.

    After thirty years cycling and now in my fifties I have changed nearly all pedals on my bikes to flat ones. I too switched from road to mtb pedals on my gravel bike and last year switched to flat pedals. After suffering multiple broken ribs during bike falls when cleated into road, gravel and MTB bikes over the years, - often during very gentle falls - I decided it was not worth it - particularly off road when chance of falling is greater. The performance difference is not going to be significant unless you are a pro-biker or racing. I have clocked faster times on flat pedals than MTB pedals on some routes over the last year. When riding in a pack with cleated cyclists there are zero issues. Since the blog is aimed at the more mature rider thought I would flag it. : - )

      Thanks for the comments on flat pedals.

      That is a good point. I did do the school boy error of not clipping out quick enough at junction a few days ago and ending up doing the slow motion fall onto my side. I think for the type of cycling I do I prefer to be clipped in, but you make a very good point.

    Just catching up with your videos while researching the Orbea Gain. I’m trying to decide between medium or large ( I’m 6ft on a good day). The saddle height measurement from my bike fit is 780mm. The reason I mention this is that I’ve seen you are 6 foot 1, and have a medium- Orbea chart suggests I’m a large so I’m confused as to the best fit. Are you happy with the sizing ?

    Nice informative video, I've been considering an Orbea gain for sometime but just can't make that final decision, i suppose i should as im now in my late 60s and cycle every day near enough, look forward to seeing your first ride.

      I have just got back fro a 28 mile ride and only used the motor for a few minutes when I got to a few larger hills. Despite the additional weight of the motor and battery it is still a really enjoy ride unassisted. it is a nice luxury to have the motor there to take the edge off.

    Very easy assembly. Glad the fitting measurements were transferable. Will you need a “refresher” visit to check the result? What style of bike would this be called? Could you say something about frame size. My hip movement is not what it was… .

    • @omcycling
      @omcycling  Před rokem

      This is an e-bike but the motor only provides assistance when paddling - it does propel you. I went for the medium frame based on the advice from the fitter. The fitter did say I could ask him questions via email or pop up with the new bike for a check.

    Hi there I was just wondering if this is the gravel, road or cyclocross bike?

    Hi, thanks for the vid. What do you think of the cyclo computer on this? It looks as though you have replaced yours with a Wahoo. Is the gain's mount compatible?

    • @omcycling
      @omcycling  Před rokem +1

      I still find the orbea computer useful as well to control the power setting of the motor and to show battery life. The wahoo will also show the battery life but it frees up space on the display. The accessory pack come with a insert for garmin and wahoo - super simple to change them over.

      @@omcycling Hi, do you happen to know if I can do away with the frankly flimsy out front mount and just replace with a normal.stem clamp? I'm just a bit nervous as there are se.wires going into it.

    😔 I didn't realise that boxes from Sigma opened like that. I spent 45 minutes pulling the staples out of the top of the box before I lifted my Gain out of its box....... then another half hour/40 minutes pulling them out of the bottom to flatten the box down to take to the dump.

    • @omcycling

      My box it still under the shed waiting to be taken (it has been there nearly 4 months now)
