I bought an e-bike in 2017 because I wanted to make scenic indoor cycling videos. I was too slow climbing the scenic Colorado mountains where I live to make decent videos. The e-bike solved the problem. What surprised me was all the other benefits I discovered. With the e-bike I was riding more and in more places. I was no longer intimidated by tough climbs, strong wind, or fast group rides. I actually got more fit riding with the e-bike as measured by the data from my Garmin Edge and heart rate monitor. The e-bike put me in control of my workouts, not the hills or wind. On a regular bike there were times when I would take on too big of a challenge with long climbs or strong headwinds. I would become exhausted miles from home and be forced to ride slowly which makes the ride that much longer. With an e-bike I can simply increase the level of assist. I suddenly go faster, cool off with the increased breeze, and break out of the doldrums with the exhilaration that comes with speed. My CZcams channel is Jerry's Scenic Cycling. My viewers are mainly male over 65. I have over 23,000 miles on my e-bike and I'm 80 years old.

I'm not against E-bikes, but my thoughts are if you're healthy then you don't need one. I'm now seeing more e-bikes on my local mountain bike trails than normal bikes; it can be a bit of an issue when the e-bikers are overtaking you on the uphills, then completely getting in the way and slowing you down on the downhills and the technical sections.. I'm getting on a bit, and if I needed one for medical reasons I'd get one, but until then, no way.

I have 5 traditional bikes (road, gravel, touring, etc) and 1 ebike. You don't have to be old or disabled to enjoy riding an ebike. My traditional (no motor) gravel bike is my favorite. But some days I just want to explore, so the ebike is good for that. And here's a fun fact. Many pro mountain bikers use an ebike for their zone 2 training rides ( beats an indoor trainer)

Got me a Scott Solace eRide 20 last August and drove over 4.000 kilometers on it. Pure fun and the difference between having this ebike compared to having a normal bike is the amount of kilometers which I had never rode on a normal bike for sure these days, because I wasn't fit at all and I hate riding uphill and against the wind. So at that point I am lazy and fun oriented to some extend, yes. So far, the ebike motivates me almost any time at almost any weather and I had 100 percent fun riding it. Even in the winter months, which are not that hard here in Germany to be fair but anyway. So I think, it was a good investment in my health, I'm quite fit now and even had no gripal infect last autumn/ winter season as well. Also the TQ motor allows to set up how strong the motor support should be on different scales. It also motivates to level the support down to gain the overall distance of the planned tours. If I'm tired from work or something but still want to have some bike fun, I chose a bit more motor support. So these days are not that effective and a bit lazy, but still better than sitting on a sofa relaxing in the end, I guess. Ok, a lot of text. Hope it wasn't too boring reading this ordinary opinion. By the way, I'm 50 years old, if that's of any interest to anybody.

Good vlog and totally agree - ebikes are just a natural progression of innovation in cycling. To use the "ebike haters" logic, anything other than a "fixie" is "cheating" and therefore everyone on the Tour de France are "cheaters" - try saying that to Pogačar's face!!! Might be worth a follow up just explaining that it's limited pedal assist, which cuts out at 15.5mph etc etc - sometimes just have to spell it out for the plethora of idiots out there 🤔

I'm 77 and have been riding serious miles on various road bikes for 37 years. I raced on a team for a number of years. Several years ago I was one who scoffed at electric bikes, calling them "Mopeds". But that was because I was ignorant of what they are all about. I studied the various types of e-bikes and found that they come in 3 distinct types, 1, 2 and 3. I chose type 1 because it does not have what I call a throttle as the other types do. Type 1 just adds wattage to your effort. If you stop pedaling, the added power also stops, you must continue to add your normal effort in order to have the extra push. I now can ride further and maintain a quicker pace. I get the benefit on hills and against the wind. I too can turn off the assist and do if I have a nice tail wind and the extra weight is not felt. My ride is a LOOK e-765.

After selling a few bikes I'm down to two, which are keepers. The oldest is 60 years old, almost as old as me, the other is a mid 90's rigid mtb/atb. Both bikes are Raleighs. If I was forced to keep just one of them it would be the 60 year old roadster type, it's just so comfortable. Either that or I'd put north road handlebars on my rigid M-trax. You don't need a road bike, you don't need to do 50+ miles per day and you certainly don't need a modern bike to get fit. Just do what you can but more importantly don't forget to enjoy it.

My oldest bike is a 32 year old GT Pantera AL mountain bike, I found it on Facebook marketplace on my birthday last May, I arranged for it to be delivered the next day, the guy I bought from was very helpful, so credit to him for dropping it off at my address! The bike was stored dry for many years so minimal wear other than replacing the chain and cassette, it still has it's original tyres, derailleurs, shifters and brakes and rides like how I remembered it from 31 years ago when I owned the same model bike that got stolen. Nothing wrong with retro bikes if they're maintained well.

I do know there's a lot of people out there that enjoy those "old and obsolete" bikes, but no one wants to build and sell good parts for them anymore the bike industry wants to force you to only buy the new bikes. For sure out there is a good market for those old frames. "The bicycle doesn't make the rider"

  • @Older_Mountain-goat_1984

And, older bikes are better quality. They may have less than desired gearing specs or technology - heavier and no suspension (I primarily do XC), but they're overall quality is better For those of us who've been around for a while, I theorise I'm not the only one who's witnesses the continuous decline in quality of products many manufacturers offer. Once trusted brands, now producing rubbish, because the hierarchy of these companies have deeply embraced the business model of 'reduced quality = more money in our pockets'. E.G., - my 2019 Norco Storm 1 29" HT is utter crap compared to my 2014 Merida 26" HT (regretfully sold, ahh, hindsight). They were both around the same price, yet the quality has dramatically dropped on the Norco. Same with my 2002 Ford BA XR6 ute, utter crap quality compared to my 1996 Ford EF sedan, both 2nd hand, both equal in milage and condition upon purchase. I've had the ute for several years now, and I still shake my head at how bad the quality is, but it more than adequately explains why Ford AU no longer exists. Back to bikes: I now ride old bikes I pick up from the tip for $5 each, some complete, all needing new and quality 2nd hand parts to rebuild to ride status. Some just need new grips, saddle, chain, cables and tyres. And in taking up restoring older bikes for a hobby, I've experienced that older 26" HTs are way more fun to ride XC, than sluggish 29ers. Both my 29" Norco and my current ride, a dump find Avanti 26", both have identical groupset specs, brakes and suspension, and the Avanti is a blast on my 42km XC rides on a repurposed abandoned train track, basically a midly bumpy fireroad with minimal gradients, past farmland then lush tassie bush. Of course, many bike manufacturer's primary desire is money, not bikes or riding, so they try all manner of tactics to influence you to constantly buy and upgrade. If I never experienced the huge drop in quality from my 2014 and 2019 bikes, I'd still be buying and riding new. Not any more, I prefer my older bikes, though for XC I still prefer alloy frames, with at least front suspension. I've several road bikes in the shed ready for rebuilds, all alloy, one carbon, an Apollo...ha, someone threw away a complete carbon road bike...but steel frames wouldn't be a problem for me for road riding. I do have a 90's Trek 800 Sport cro-mo HT, pre suspension era, but for me, there's too much fatigue experienced without suspension for XC, seeing as I now do long distance. I'll slowly rebuild the Trek 800 for collection purposes, not for riding.

"And in taking up restoring older bikes for a hobby, I've experienced that older 26" HTs are way more fun to ride XC, than sluggish 29ers". So true, I owned a couple of 29ers back in 2013-14 but I now own 4 GT's all of which are 26" wheels and they are great at climbing, it's just my fitness that holds me back a bit, working on that has improved since the same time last year! 3 of my 4 GT's are 90's bikes, love them! I come from a BMX racing background and find smaller frames much easier to get on with, and that in combination with 26" wheels is a win win for me. My GT Tempest is built up as a BMX/MTB hybrid cruiser with tall BMX bars with 1x9 gears ( 34 tooth chainring linked with a 11-34 cassette makes it for a great climber too). I did own the 2013 Voodoo Bizango 29er that received great reviews then!

@@techjunkie68smusicandtech56 I like the sound of your bikes. Any change you could link to some photos? Late teens, wanting to fit in, and due to 6" height (could've bought a 24"), I bought a full chrome Mongooge Moosegoose, same as a standard 20" but taller frame height, shod with black Skyway Tuff IIs. Wasn't into competing or tricks... a few months later, bought some parts, built it to run a two speed crank with bmx race chain tensioner where rear der would go. Did this because I enjoyed long distance riding and stardard gearing was too slow. 26 vs 29ers: I'm fitter now, could only just manage 18km XC 2 years ago, next phase, 28km, and this year started doing 42km (3.5hrs). Distances determined by exploring the Railtrail to see how far I could go, keeping in mind the return leg, and settling on waypoints that suit a rest stop amidst the thick foliage. Current rest stop has a Rotary Club built shed, water tank and firepit, it used to be one of the stations along this abandoned traintrack. Next way point is 52km, working on reaching that before the year is out, as I'm currently still low on energy for the last 10km. When I can have energy for the whole 42km, then I do an increase. Long term goal is 100+km ( full day's ride), as the Railtrail goes for along way. Now I'm fitter, I'll take the 29er out on the 42km run, to compare it against my 26er, as it could've been low fitness that made the 29 XC runs sluggish, I doubt it, but my scientific brain urges me to do the actual testing. Until then, based on past experiences with my 29er, agreeing with you that 26" frames and wheels do seem more nimble, thus more fun to ride, but I wasn't doing faster paced LD XC when I had the 29er. Regarding fitness development: - I've electrolite powder in my water, a noticeable difference in energy retention. - I pass on a heavy breakfast. - Dried mixed fruit on the ride, soon to make my own energy bars, so I can eat while riding, though not an issue to stop and rest, even on shorter runs. - Always small incremental increases in distances and pushing myself. Too much fatigue and soreness always spoils a ride, and can psych you out for your next ride. - And due to a cold winter this year, even though I prefer winter riding (minimal sweat, longer distances covered, more invigorating air + Wim Hof type health benefits)...I just started doing strength runs of 21kms. I can't power through the whole 42km route, but I can on the 21kms, thus the shorter runs develops strength, which will aid in the endurance runs. Learnt on these LD rides that cadence is a primary factor. Current gearing is 3 x 9 ...28-38-48 x 11-36. Based on curent fitness level, I now only use 2nd and 3rd on the crank and never drop below 3rd on the cassette for the mild inclines. But I noticed 3rd is slightly too easy, and 4th too hard, so I recently swapped 11-36 for 11-32. This 3rd is perfect cadence for inclines. Used to manage mid 13kph on inclines, now doing mid 14s. Avg for whole ride increased by 1-2kph, and I'm using less energy. Amazingly, the new cassette 3rd is 1 tooth between the old 3rd and 4th. One tooth difference, and it created noticable benefits.Bought parts to change gearing to 42\44T max for crank and either 11-23\25T cassette, based on ratio calculations. Tighter the cassette ratios, the finer cadence choices, which results in better avg speeds and reduced energy consumption. Candence not an issue for short runs, but important for LD and climbing.

I could have lots of fun on my 31 year old steel Trek mountain bike that I converted for touring long before the current trends started.

I don't consider a 15 year old bike as that old. I ride a 1998 Klein Quantum Race and it is still a great bike. I initially replace the seat post for a carbon one and the stock seat for a lighter seat. I also replaced the stem with a shorter one to make it fit my size better. About 13 years ago, my right shifter began to malfunction and I had to replace it with a 10 speed shifter and cassette. Other than that, it is still stock;same frame, wheels, derailleurs and brakes.

I had knee issues riding regular bikes for longer distances, bought an ebike, but now the controller is acting up, so decided to try regular biking again, *but* with much shorter cranks. 152mm from 170mm. I am 172cm tall and the shorter cranks have made my knee pains disappear. So now I probably won't repair the ebike, because I prefer the better workout now that I can just keep riding without knee pain.

I don't understand the bike industry's cruelty of morally outlawing older bikes. For exercise and training, the age of the bike, and rider, are completely irrelevant. My road cycle is goin on thirteen years old now, being ridden rather hard in a quite hilly part of my country and it's still my most trusted steed. As for your fitness, dear sir, I think you're doing fine. if I can do twenty miles at your age, with this bad leg of mine, I'll be quite pleased.

My Canyon Carbon is from 2006. With Hyper wheels and campagnolo 12 mechanical. Apart from breaking in the rain, its still up there 😊

I'm still riding a Dawes Super Galaxy that I purchased in 1998 It will have easily covered more than 55,000 miles by now. it's still in perfect working order and well maintained. I expect it'll last me for another 20 years. It's fickle to change you bike every 5 minutes and even suggesting a 15 year old bike is old seems a bit bizarre to me. A old bike is a simple machine and with proper care and maintenance can last many years providing spare parts are still available.

15years is old? BLimey. My most ridden bike is a 1983 (yes, 41years old...) 531 Carlton Professional, running a late '90s Campagnolo Racing-T 3x9s groupset, modern finishing kit. 8.9Kg. Which is 2Kg heavier than a carbon bike, but insignificant compared to the extra 30Kg I;m carrying!

How many people would drive a 15 year old car and be pleased with it? Thanks for the vlog, keep pedalling.

Plenty of great cars that are 15 years old, with cars it is more about the maintenance cost. With bikes, if you are not racing there is no problem riding an older bike, if well maintained. As long as it gets you out there.

I prefer older cars, my last car was a 2006 Honda civic and was a dream to drive, unfortunately I lost my job and could no longer afford to keep it so I sold it and bought a couple of bikes instead, that now have been replaced by others like in my previous comment.
