This game had it all: a jam-packed stadium, tension until the very end, lights out pitching from both teams, unlikely blunders, unlikely heroes, a smidge of controversy, and CHAOS BALL. That's what I call a classic.
tell me you guys if is something wrong with the new wild card law?
Absolute Classic.. will go down as 1 of rhe best games of all time
This game was also boring af🥱
Former President of the Miami Marlin David Samson was on MLB Tonight advocating the Ghost Runner in the Playoffs, you know where a runner automatically starts on 2nd base in extra innings.
At least we wont have to hear these annoying mariner announcers yell at nothing all game again.
I was there - 1 of (probably) only 20 Astros fans in a sea of 47,000+ loud Mariners fans. Everyone got drunk...then sobered up by the 14th inning stretch and I don't think anybody sat down from the 6th inning until the very end.
I don't know if TV caught it, but a very cool moment happened after the Stros won - the crowd gave a thunderous "Let's Go Mariners! *clap clap clap clap clap*" for about a solid 2 minutes for their team.
I can't say enough great things about Seattle and the fans - it was an experience I'll never forget, but man...this game...soo tense...players, coaches, umpires, media and all the fans were just exhausted by the end. one of those rare moments in sports where absolutely every person gave everything they had for 6.5 hours and didn't let up.
M’s fans are insane. No one left that game, super cool after game chant
At least M’s fans got to see there team in the playoffs at home in 21 years but this does hurt though maybe next time
We have to be insane
@@marco4103 not really, I’m happy we fought well and fought hard
What were they chanting?
Proud to be a fan
This was probably the greatest pitched game in postseason history.
Not really joking either. It would've gone to a 19th inning easily if not for one mistake.
The pitching on both sides was unbelievable
I would agree. However, the home plate umpire certainly made a lot of bad calls.
@@damon6126 he did the same for both teams tbh
@@ryanbaines7311 yes he did

I live in the UK. I committed to watching this game from the start to the end. It was both a great and terrible decision.
Lmao yeah, baseball can be a snooze fest sometimes, but it’s a beautiful sport
We swept the series but every single game was really tough to win, mariners also had good season and they would be better on the next season! Let’s go astros!!
We had wished to have 2 games in Seattle and we had it but all in same day haha 9 +9 innings..18 innings
@@elbertanecito6797 yeh astros needed 18innings to beat mariners
The Mariners were tough
@@yahn4990 The mariners also did not score anything in 18 innings.
You can be an Astros fan, but only at the cost of being a Baseball fan. If you’re a true Baseball fan, then you can’t be an Astros fan because The Astros still have players who violated some of the most fundamental rules of the game.
They really played 2 games in 1😂
the real ALCS sweep
To the classy and kind Astros fans, good game.
It sure was a bitter pill to swallow losing in an 18-inning clash. With a young roster, I'm sure the M's will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons.
Yea gg hopefully you guys can get another try next year
I'm sure you guys will
Yall have a great young team. I look forward to seeing yall in future postseasons to come
Gg mariners fans. Julio Rodriguez is a stud.
thank you! gg
Dear Mariners fans, Ya'll have a lot to be proud of with this team. What an amazing turn around in such a short time. I remember reading and responding to some super dejected M's fans the last couple of years who couldn't foresee them doing anything like this any time soon. Surprise! Ya'll got good! I expect the M's to challenge for the division title next season. GGs
You’re absolutely right!! Seattle finally started a proper rebuild like 4-5 years ago. And happy to give some competition to Houston for the AL WEST for years to come. 😊
It'll be a great year next year. Go win the world series for us
What a double-header! Lol. Congratulations to the Mariners for an incredible season. Go Stros!
It took me a second to get it lol. But what a double header it was lol
I was thinking the same thing. What a battle this series was. And safe to say the Astros officially have some competition in the AL WEST
So I guess the Astros swept this series in four games. 😄
As an astros fan I have to say great job mariners. I can't throw any shade at yall bc you played a helluva series and all 3 games you could've won. Like what yall are doin over there & hope to get another great series with yall next season
I wasn't expecting this...but honestly, I'm feeling net-stoked after the loss. This team is so young, how can you NOT be hyped for the future? Also Peña getting the winning run sets up the potential for a Julio/Peña divisional rivalry for years to come.
I AM ENTERTAINED.
Go freakin' Mariners. Awesome season, awesome team, cannot wait for what's to come 💙
18 innings only 1 run usually means bad baseball, this game was a thing of beauty though, both teams played with energy, played well, and had pitchers and fielders making big-time plays when needed.
They have a very good pitching staff, but that offense has been an issue all season. We all knew it would end up being their biggest weakness in the postseason.
Bad baseball? Or the best 2 bullpens in baseball? Are you delusional dude? You do know the Astros are ranked #1 in pitching.
Bad baseball? What about all the gems in the outfield from both teams that could’ve been extra base hits?
Agreed. From an Astros fan. Every game this series was so close. Hats off to your season, and we'll meet again next year.
@@RedRoseKing13 ^
This has to be one of the craziest days of playoff baseball ever.
18 INNINGS 🤯. As a houstonian/Astros fan the mariners should be proud of themselves. I read the fans wanted to do a parade for them. I support that 100%. They deserve it regardless of the outcome
This might be the closest “sweep” ever
As a astros fan I feel like if Álvarez didnt hit that walk off in game 1 we wouldve lost the series. Mariners were on a hot run before that lost
The one they usually consider the closest sweep ever is the 2005 World Series. Wonder how that compares
@@Backendralph You shouldn't say if or say the Astros would have loss the series if Alvarez didn't hit the walk off because Alvarez did hit the walk off and the Astros did win. A Win is a win. You can take that away from them. The Astros deserve credit and have worked hard for that win. I know you probably feel bad for the Mariners because they are a good team and they did play well, but the reality is they didn't win
@@rosettaokabayashi2030 nobody is taking credit away he’s just saying that the game 1 killed the momentum for Seattle and boosted Houston to get the sweep and without it probably would of lost
@@tenshi3858 No I disagree with you, there was no " Probably would have lost." And I don't feel it killed the Momentum for Seattle because they came back and played very well. It all happened the way it was supposed to happen that's the way I look at it. It is what it is
'Stros advance, Braves are gone, Dodgers are gone, and the Evil Empire is one game away from elimination. Today was a good day for Houston.
So far, so good, but the Evil Empire isn't done yet.
This post season is nuts. If the Astros end up being the only top seed to advance I have a feeling they are going to change the rules and maybe do something crazy like add more playoff teams
@@irishpanic Next season they're banning defensive shift, as well as making the bases larger, which will hugely benefit scrappy small ball playing clubs like the Guardians.
I honestly think they should have the extra inning ghost runner rule in post season, since teams play with it for 162 games. We've already had a 15 inning and an 18 inning game this post season. Lol. Assuming that they do add the ghost runner in post season, that would also benefit base hit baserunning teams over long ball teams as well.
@@GiuseppeGaetanoSabatelli they will try to make it easier for the Yankees and dodgers to win but hopefully it backfires and the Astros and guardians continue to be great
Waiting for the Yankees to be eliminated 😂
M's fans don't care about wins and losses, they are truly a fan base that sees the magic of baseball and the strange and exciting moments that it brings. What a wild game this was and its really no coincidence that it was a Mariners game
Seattle DOES care about wins and losses....The city is a bandwagon city of wannabe fans who only pay attention once the team is close to a possible championship season.....(see Seattle Seahawks 2012-2013 season). It's the one town that roots for the home team in order to relate to one another. As for the team itself....They did a great job but after the 8th inning it seems every player at bat was just trying to slam the ball out the park. Gotta admit they did show lots of promise.
@@eclint Did I Say Seattle? negative. M's fans Brother
@@eclint That is ridiculous and you couldn't be more wrong.
First, how would you feel by year 10, 11, 12 during a playoff drought when all your team was doing is trying to take shortcuts, and not building the team the right way and seeing the same result again and again?
Second, the Seahawks thing you mentioned is also ridiculous, have you only been alive since the 2010's? The Seahawks went to the Superbowl in 2005 and played in the single most rigged game in sports history and that is undeniable.
Third, have you ever had a beloved sports franchised ripped from your heart like Seattle fans have had to with the Seattle Sonics?
2005 Astros advance to NLCS after Chris Burke hits a walk off home run in the 18th inning
2022 Astros advance to ALCS after Jeremy Peña hits a game winning home run in the top of the 18th inning
I was thinking that too! Plus, no offense intended to Braves fans here, y'all had a heck of a season too, but the Braves were eliminated from the Division series on both of those days as well.

Man those Mariners were tough, they're definitely gonna be a force next year and years to come. We will see them again in the postseason. As an Astros fan. Much respect to the Seattle Mariners.
Both teams gave it there all. This is why I love baseball
Mariners fans you had an amazing season you have a lot to be proud of, keep your heads up you were great and the next season promises more
As much as everyone hates on the Astros they’re consistently a top 5 team and made 6 straight ALCS which is INSANE. The whole organization has a business mentality and move with a purpose.
No Correa, No Springer, No Brantley
no problem.
@@The_HouStoner Well, they won but I wouldn't say "no problem". If the Astros had those 3 back and healthy... the team would be a lot scarier.
@@scottgarner8270 i can assure you if Correa was here he would not have hit that HR like Peña would have lol. Springer gets injured way too much, but he’s better than any CF we got. However, Brantley helps a lot, dude is a base hitting machine.
I was there for all 18 innings, and what the cameras can't show you is that almost everyone apart from the people right behind home plate were on their feet the entire time. And from the 9th to 17th innings, every time the M's got out of the inning safely, the cheering was so loud I could feel the vibrations in my body. Lost my voice multiple times, was using a cane because I was recovering from surgery, but I'll be damned if I sat down a single time while a Mariner was at the plate. And although the loss hurt, I couldn't be prouder of how our guys played. And to the Astros and their fans, I gotta say, your young core is SCARY. I felt fear in my heart every time Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, or Jeremy Peña walked up to the plate. Got nothing but respect for those guys, y'all have a true dynasty on your hands. Great defense from both teams and just a phenomenal job by the pitchers from both teams. To me, this kind of game is so much more fun to watch than a 12-10 game. The amount of concentration from the players, the chess match going on between managers. THIS is baseball to me. A tip of the hat to the Mariners and their fans (although the shoe-on-the-head thing is weird) for a challenging series. The Astros' quest continues in the ALCS. Keep that train rolling, lads! GO STROS!!
Pressly is your Daddy!!!!!! Hahaha!!!!!! GFYS!!!!!!! Cry harder!!!!!!!
I think this might be the best game in 2022 postseason.
Seriously though like the Guardians-Rays game was just super boring and just felt like the teams were playing bad, this one felt like insanely good baseball with players making big plays to keep it scoreless.
Not even close. The first game where Yordan hit that 3 run homer was rated as the most improbable win in playoff MLB history. That was definately a thiller for sure. But yes, this game where Pena hits a HR to finish such a grueling game is up there - but not the best I've seen. Special mention to the bullpen in this game-clinching game, awesome work - especially GARCIA pitching LIGHTS OUT for 5 innings! His pitches were NASTY and is the unsung hero in this game for sure!!
Dang That's a long game! :) Too bad about our Mariners losing though. But respect to Houston for playing a good game too! :)
Alright, I expected our Astros bullpen to hol serve but the Mariners' bullpen surprised me. Honestly, the games could have gone either way. I'm very happy we won the series but Seattle will be a great team for years, they'll be back. The fans are great too! A lot of them stayed and gave their players an ovation and applause for the season. They're not toxic, like most NY fans, who boo their players...Go Stros!
Maybe the most intense series sweep of all time. Every game was a nailbiter.
Proud of my mariners we finally made it to the post season wish we could've went further or won one.
all three games were very close, a couple of bounces the other way and....
@Fries Finally made it to the dance. And won our series versus Toronto. As well as giving a battle against Houston. I’d call this season a super success. This is just the beginning of a window of winning and competing for the ALWEST crown for years to come!!
You guys swept the blue jays! Something to be very proud of! I don't care to watch many teams but you guys are exciting to watch.
So proud of them
Astros are a professional squad loaded and not overloaded in terms of contracts
What a way to hit your first postseason home run in your career. An honor to have faced these amazing pitches for the mariners, but onto the next LETS GO STROS!
Mariners fan here. And looking forward to our teams competing for the AL WEST for years to come. Good luck against Cleveland
This was basically game 3 and 4
Respect to Seattle, the series was MUCH closer than the 3-0 result would indicate.
What a game, what a series!
And let's be real, what a run!
Six conservative trips to the ALCS?
Grandpa seemed to have an afternoon Stros game on every time we had a weekend get together; it didn't matter that we didn't do too much winning back then, the Stros were family!
And look at us now baby!
blew a 2-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. back to back doubles would have won the game had GUrriel not caught the liner for a DP. and 1-run 18-inning game. so pretty much 4-5 possession game for 3 losses.
@@cyruschan7087 Every team has would haves, should haves, could haves like that. What would have happened if Verlander hadn't had a bad game? Or if Dusty would have gone to the bullpen sooner in game 1? The Mariners only scored 1 solo HR against the Houston bullpen in the entire series. The Mariners bullpen gave up 6 runs in game 1. Maybe had Julio not caught a ball that Yuli hit with RISP in game 3, the Astros would have won that game sooner. Or what would have happened in game 2 had Framber Valdez not thrown a wild throw to home? The Mariners would have only scored 1 run in that game and would have lost 4-1 instead of 4-2. What would have happened had Bichette not made an error in the Blue Jays' series? Maybe it would have been the Blue Jays advancing. It happens to every team. Winning is all about stepping up when it matters and that's what the Astros did. Did Seattle have a great season? Yes. Are they a good team? Yes. Mariners fans should be proud, but Houston is an experienced team that did what they had to do to win that series.
It really could have been 3-0 Seattle tbh

@Marty Kiestadt idk man i love houston but verlander does get teed off on lot by the mariners. i dont want to say for certain but the mariners might have the best batting average against verlander, if not they are certainly near the top.
@@yelyharmony2047 Yes, he was the only one resting THAT MANY days.
The position players had rested between the last regular season game and the first one. They were somewhat rusty.
Verlander had not pitched for much longer than the rest of the team had played, so he was very rusty.
Compare his Game 1 Division Series start to his start in Game 5 of the World Series. That's when the real Verlander showed up.
The commentators from Mariners are so hyped that I thought Mariners win the game
First home playoff game in 21 years my dude. We were on the road for the Toronto series and in Houston for the first two of this one

Going into the 2022 playoffs the longest scoreless tie was 12 innings. So far in the postseason, we've had a 14 inning and a 17 inning scoreless tie! (I'm not counting the last inning since the teams were no longer tied in that inning)

Mariners' fans should be proud for almost all your Pitchers who did excellent jobs for today's and previous postseason games, even though some Mariners' batters might have missed some chances for doing better jobs. Your Mariners' players had had a very tough year, yet they brought the Mariners'fans back to taste the excitement of postseason after 20 years. And they also gave Mariners' fans hope for 2023 season. Great fight for Mariners in 2022! And looking forwards to 2023 season while facing the Mariners.
From Shohei's fan.
(I feel thankful to the Mariners' friendships towards Shohei, even after the two teams were having some major conflicts. In later games after the big fight, seeing Shohei meeting with some Mariners' players with big smiles and hugs in the field and at bases moved my heart a lot).
Seattle play very well all year long..Astros are a very tough team..

As a lifelong Astros fan (60+ years) I have weathered more losing seasons that not. Hat's off to the Mariners and their fans. Your day too will come.
Rookie players from all-time postseason games are the main characters
You missed the highlight of the game. Mariners fans chanting “let’s go Mariners!” after the loss. A gesture that let the team know that fans appreciate the effort this season & especially this final post-season game.
Amazing performance by Garcia, he pitched like it was a normal start with all of his energy, but what made it hard for the Mariners were that they were already exhausted and tired, they have very little energy left
the dickeating is crazy
Garcia is the unsung hero in this game. He was LIGHTS OUT and kept the Astros in it until Pena did his thing to finally end the stalemate. Don't know about the Mariners having "very little energy left" cuz they played hard and played their hearts out in all 3 games. They're also a very young team - much younger than our Astros - so I seriously doubt they were "exhausted and tired" too. We got very lucky in Games 1 and 2 due to Yordan's heroics so I tip my hat off to them. J-Rod is an MVP-level type player - much like a Mooke Betts 2.0 in the AL. Because of him and their solid pitching staff they'll be a headache for the Astros to deal with for years to come. Great series Mariners and GO STROS!!

Don't be down, Mariners. Your team had a great season, ended a 21 year playoff drought, and are proven playoff contenders. OK, that being said, the Stros still own the West until you take it. Great series!
10 minutes is not enough for the art of this pitchers duel that lasted over 6 hours 😮💨😮💨

Thank you for a great season Mariners 💙 True to the blue
Im never the type to scream during sports or things like this, but damn I yelled my lungs out when Pena hit the walk off. I was acting like I won the game myself
I hate losing in three. It is extremely disappointing how awful the offense was. Hopefully, we can get better because I don't know how the Astros can get worse (they are stacked).
The Astros have elite pitching
Playoff baseball is tough against an extremely good pitching staff. But y'all had a great season. We'll meet again soon.
The Astros has the pitching already. We have it all. It's just the hitting, they need to start hitting the ball more. Once they accomplish that. The Astros for sure will be unstoppable.
Congratulations on a successful season. They will build off of this season. 🧡
Spend more money on payroll, Astros have a good 60+mil on the Mariners. The difference in these games came down to literally one or two key players. Mariners need a power hitter, their batting is very average at best.
Even when retired, the mariners can’t give Felix run support
Now that's funny 😄

I actually believe this was the hardest and closet sweep ever in playoffs...that tells a good story about both teams...The Astros pulled the sweep despite facing a strong resistance...and the Mariners sold every loss very expensively...so...both teams should be happy.
I know it was the Astros the ones to advance but the Mariners just need to keep the work going with this team and they'll keep being contenders!
By the way...this game was all about pitching and defense...Some players going like 0 for 7 or 8 could have had 2 hits at least and good defense kept them from it!

But I understand how you feel, I USED to feel sorry for certain teams and players that don't get that glory but honestly, I feel much worse for the fans. They don't have millions but spend their hard earned cash to watch these games, which are very meaningful because it changes your whole day if they win. Seattle has some of the best fans but have had disappointment year after year (Superbowl interception at the goal line....). But I think the Mariners are going to be really good for the next few years at least. They've locked in Rodriguez for over a decade, he's scary good! Go Stros!
Imagine one day being down 8-1 and coming back and winning to win a series only the next game up 7-3 in the 8th and blowing it and getting swept on top of that.
Oof
Choke job of the century.
If they do it again....
Might need the Doyers to make some room in LA.
Absolutely good game
I'm an Astros fan ..Good season Mariners !
Just 10 minutes for 18 innings? No wonder it took so long to get this posted. Can you imagine how much got left on the cutting room floor?
ASTROS FAN BUT THOSE MARINERS WOW WHAT A GREAT TEAM AND SO YOUNG WATCH OUT NEXT YEAR ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾
What a great series. As a Mariners fan I felt we proved that Seattle is ready to complete for the AL WEST for years to come.
Good luck versus Cleveland
"Let's play 2!" -- Astros and Mariners
I love when the Villain of the story triumphs 🧡💙
18 innings. 6 hours: 22 minutes. 18 different pitchers. 42 strikeouts.
두 팀 끝까지 잘 했다. MLB선수들의 정신력을 팬들에게 재각인시키는 훌륭한 경기였다.
Mariners tried their best, they should be Proud themselves !!!!!
