    Every single pattern entry tutorial uses the same flight path examples from the center of each sector and usually with a sharp, instant pivot style, course change at the fix. This is the first I have seen(print or video) that looks at the real flight path when you come in at the extreme edges of an entry sector and make real world standard rate turns. Good job.

    Thanks Boldmethod. In regards to when to use unpublished or not in database HP, about 9:00 .... Here is an example of where a GA aircraft might use a holding pattern to climb to an airway. It is the ODP at Corona Muni KAJO. (Found on Skyvector IFR Takeoff Mins and ODP's.)
    DEPARTURE PROCEDURE: Rwy 7, climbing left turn. Rwy 25, climbing right turn. All aircraft continue climb direct to PDZ VORTAC. Aircraft departing PDZ R-091 CW R-140 and R-231 CW R-280 climb on course. All others continue climb in PDZ VORTAC holding pattern (Hold NE, right turns, 210° inbound) to cross PDZ VORTAC at or above: R-141 CW R-230 4000, R-281 CW R-090 6700.
    If you have filed V442 as part of IFR flight plan, you would climb in holding pattern until 9000 MEA.
    Please correct me if I am wrong.

      Agreed. Had to take out my abacus and do some serious math, scratch my head a couple of times, dig out my FAA Instrument Flying Handbook Fig. 10-6, and then look in the comments section for someone paying attention to detail. Thanks. Boldmethod still the best on youtube tho.

    as a controller, I expect you to stay on the holding side. In a RADAR environment, ask for vectors for a direct entry

    Actually the parallel sector is 110°, not 120° but great class. Keep it up!

      Yes, I caught that too. The 70 degrees should add up to 180 on the next segment. Which should be 110 degrees.

      Yo have the 110 plus 5 degrees of tolerance on the limit line where you can decide to enter either by teardrop or parallel, and 5 more degrees on the other side where you can decide to enter parallel or directly.

    The logic of 3x te WCA in the outbound leg, is because is the leg where you corect the time that you were under wind efect in the 2 turns. So is the same corection of the inbound leg more 2 times that corection (in angle) = 3x the angle.

    Smallest FAA pattern template non holding side Perpindicular distance (from inbound track) is 3.5 miles.

    How do you know your ground speed or really just how long to fly outbound? Assume in IMC and no GPS? Do you just take the ATIS reported wind, which, I’m thinking may not be accurate if fix isn’t close enough to the field. But with that do you estimate GS or just outbound leg time somehow?

    Isn’t it a thumb width from 284, not 270? The reason I say, normally the edge of the parallel and teardrop share the inbound course line.

    I know this is an older video so I’m not “expecting” a reply, but it would be nice. I have had one question about Non-published holding patterns that no one seems to be able to explain so as to get through my thick skull. When a controller issues a non-published holding pattern, they’ll say hold east or west of blank fix. Or hold north or south of blank fix. But there are two quadrants to each cardinal direction. Regardless of left or right turns, one could be in either quadrant, how do you know which one? Example, hold east of fix. A right turn pattern could be north east or south east. Both would have a right turn, how do you know where? North or south? This confuses me.

      They'll never leave you with such a sparse hold instruction, and if they do you can ask for more info. It'd look like "N12345, Hold E of the XYZ VORTAC 270 radial 10 DME, 2 minute legs, standard turns, EFC at 1432". The radial you're assigned is the INBOUND leg. If you're holding E of that 10DME fix, and have R turns, there's only one hold you can build. Of course there are some standards like right turns, but you can always clarify if they don't put in pieces, during your read back: if they didn't explicitly provide turn direction or leg lengths or anything else, just clarify during read back. "...And please confirm 1 minute legs, Right turns? N12345."
      And as always, you can ask questions! Better to clarify rather than assume.

    what that meants? parallel determined by 110 degress not 120 degress? cause TD it's 70 degress P 110 Degress And Direct Entry it's 180 Degress....
