How to avoid getting yelled at by AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL - Real world ATC

  • I talked to a real air traffic controller, RH from the podcast Opposing Bases, and he discussed several tips that pilots can use to prevent getting in trouble with ATC. This is great information for pilots of all levels, whether you fly in busy airspace or not. At the end of the day, you definitely should do your best, when able, to stay on the "good side" of ATC.

Thanks for the video. I also enjoy the OB podcast. One humorous thing about ATC communication is before I was a pilot I used to always think "Why don't those guys just slow down when they talk!!" Now as a private pilot myself I have to remind myself to talk slower and not blur through things ... especially the read-backs.

This is great. I like that you realize that when the CFI is yackking in my ear that I might miss a call. I should probably tell him that unless I am doing something wrong please don't talk. We'll debrief later. Also I don't like when ATC gives me taxi instructions when I am on short final. You (ATC) might not get an immediate reply.

I just dealt with a snotty ATC at Palm Springs this past Saturday simply asking for VFR flight following. Very testy there at Palm Springs....

I am pretty good at communication with ATC, but I'm not a professional pilot and I don't want to be one.

I'll go to my local airport and listen to ground/tower. When a plane gets its instructions, I try to repeat what I think the plane will say before they say it and compare the difference.

It would be nice if we could tell the controllers we want to talk to them on the phone afterwards. "Hey yeah, student pilot here. I understand you're dealing with multiple airplanes at the same time, BUT you're not the only one with a lot going on. How about slowing it down a little bit This isn't a speed talking competition."
