That is one of Kennedy Steve's favorite jokes. One of his other favorites is when a pilot asks whether he should follow the plane in front of him and Kennedy Steve usually replies "follow him only to the runway, but don't follow him to (insert destination here), or everybody behind you is going to be upset." There are a lot of videos on CZcams of Kennedy Steve's conversations.

The best audio would be when you are closest to the transmitters, (the air port) the further away you are the worse it will get. A.M. is the modulation used for long distance comms. It will sound worse overall (less information can be passed on the band), but will go farther. Lower frequencies are larger and can deflect off of the ionosphere of the Earth giving added distance, but FM (higher freq) cant bounce so sound quality inproves with decreased range. Cell phones are in the GHz range giving even more space for data, (internet/video streaming) but have even less range then an FM tower. (AM range: 100 miles, FM tower 30-40 miles, cell towers: 22-45 depending)
AM offers the pilots a large enough window to communicate with the tower (if going 350 mph) on descent and landing vs FM which would require a lot more towers for that better sound quality.

This is the type of radio feedback you hear in most ATC radio comms videos, worse quality then the people in the cockpit actually hear. Hope I explained this okay :)

To any potential pilots freaking out about radio work. This audio is likely compressed and and streamed from the internet making it harder to understand. Talking on a headset in the plane it not half as bad. Requests are also easier to understand in real life as they are relevant to your current position and intentions. Ie taxi routes or airway clearances... You expect to hear certain things making them easier to anticipate and understand in different phases of flight. You brain also filters out call signs that are not relevant to you allowing you to focus on other tasks.
Listening to other aircraft out of context here, and all these different accents, different airports, different procedures, on everything from ground, tower to approach frequencies can be off putting to those thinking about getting into aviation. All I can say is. If I can do it. You can do it. Don’t freak out :)
*Mics sound muffled as the gain on a headset it such that it only picks up voice and not the sound of cabin air noise - air conditioning or engine sound - otherwise you would never hear what people are saying! You need it very close to your lips else no one can hear you talk.

After strike controllers were always on the edge and seemed to be just a bit over their ability. Alot changed after the strike, in how things were/are done, from wild west to more restrictive. I used to skydive at a uk drop zone and one of the pilots was telling me about some of the funny exchanges between transatlantic pilots and atc ,one particularly amusing one was told by a lady controller that he was no 2 after a shorts to which he replied ok mam you get your shorts down and I’ll come in behind, I’ve no reason to disbelieve it and it made me chuckle 😂😂

As a private pilot, I was coming in to land at a small tower controlled airport. The tower said 1 mile visibility, I told them I could could see the airport 3 miles out, and requested landing. They told me to contact the tower on landing. I did, and they said I should be careful about contradicting the controllers, they might shutdown the airport and prevent landing. For me, I was just giving my report, no big deal. I got the impression these people had fragile egos.

Aviation is all about predictability and procedure.
Values given are always given on the side of caution
If you start reporting anomalies for no reason you’re creating issues that cannot be ignored and must be dealt with prior to resuming regular operations

I've had similar experiences as a vfr pilot. I know the controllers have a lot on their plate but I've had a delta airport controller tell me to extend my downwind that would've busted a bravo airport next to it. Been told to hold my heading when on flight following that would've put me in clouds, along with a number of other incidents. Just communicate assertively and accurately, you're the ultimate authority of your aircraft. I've generally had good luck staying out of the way of commercial operations as much as possible and having communications be short and to the point at congested airports

A long time ago, I got to actually fly small planes on occasion, thanks to a good friend of mine who was working his way up as a licensed pilot, I had a knack for it, and did well, but the day I was going to sign up, my "would be" instructor was not there, and I never went back, as I realized that even when my hearing was perfect, I still always had a hard time understanding what is being said on radios, and would be extremely nervous if I had to talk to the control tower, so I'm glad I had a chance to try flying, it was fun, but I'm glad I never signed up, especially since flying Is quite expensive !

    • @Braiam
      @Braiam Před 2 lety +4

Do not take these as the actual radios that you have on the plane, ATC and tower literally give you a frequency to talk to you directly without all other chatter. You can hear them clearly.

  • @dmisso42

I guess it is like any language.
There's a certain timbre or "frequency" the you get into which allows you to understand what is bering said.
I worked in Live Theatre and there were words and phrases that, to anyone not in the know, were unintelligible, but to TECHS listening, were clear commands.
