One of rugby's greatest characters, both on and off the pitch. With 64 tries in 101 Tests for Australia, David 'Campo' Campese is a true legend of the game.
He played to entertain and to enjoy himself. Since his two try debut against the All Blacks in 1982, Campese has represented his country at fullback and on the wing, winning everything from Bledisloe Cups to Grand Slam tours to the 1991 Rugby World Cup. His willingness to take chances and make mistakes resulted in more than a handful of memorable moments, particularly for the Barbarians in 1984 and in the 1991 World Cup Semi Final against New Zealand.
Having eventually moved on from playing rugby, Campo took to coaching (The Sharks in Durban, South Africa) as well as running his own sports store in a Sydney suburb.
It isn't often the rugby world witnesses a player as expressive as Campese and to acknowledge this, Rugbydump salutes him with this tribute. Thanks for the memories.

as a proud irish man , many of my country men say that brian o' driscoll is the greatest individual talent in the history of rugby , but i have allways said he's no 2, for me DAVID CAMPESE is the greatest player i have ever seen, his demolition of the all blacks in the rwc 91 world cup, was the most awesome sight i have ever seen on a rugby pitch !

I wasn't even a fan of rugby as a kid, but I was a fan of Campese and rooted for him whenever I saw him on tele. Players like that just pull you in. I always appreciated speed and flair. Too young to understand the Eng v Aus rivalry back then! I might have saw it differently!

On some old video I have I heard Campo say that the Australian Rugby management, around 1993-4, forced him to hit the gym and start lifting weights if he wanted to continue playing for the Wallabies. He duly did so, and said that it was a poor decision because it meant he put weight on and he could never get it off again, no matter how hard he tried. He said he stopped lifting weights altogether and would just run miles of track but it still wouldn't come off. He said a 'power' player was never something he wanted to be and it changed him as an athlete, and he said he was worse off for it. He was never as fast again or as fluid. It was the same for me. Obviously I was never even a pinch as good as Campese, and only played up to the University level, but once I put on the weight from lifting weights I could never get it off and I got slower, not faster. In his early days Campese was practically the anti-thesis of Lomu, and I don't think we'll ever see players like that again. Not in our modern rugby age. And it's a damn shame too, if you ask me. The game has changed so much. In many ways it's unrecognizable today, and not for the better. Just not the spectacle it used to be. Or the event. Too many matches, too much corporatization, and robot-like behemoth playmanship.

Look at guys like Ma'a Nonu and Israel Folau. Both are huge units, both have impeccable speed and ballerina-like footwork. There's plenty of skill and creativity in the game today. Just like any professional sport, athletic ability tends to trend upwards with time.

Noone explains their reasoning for saying either are better or worse on here! I'm not here to impose on decisions. Jonah Lomu, probably one of the biggest presences to have ever appeared in rugby to this day. A 6'5 winger who's running 100m in sub 11 with his raw power is unforgettable. At the same time David Campese was a technical marvel... I mean lines he ran, ridiculous passes made, through balls and just analysis of the game... Both outstanding and imposing figures who changed the game.

So what if he is "only as good as his backs". He is STILL one of the BEST ever to play the game whether he is surrounded by Wallabies or in his club rugby.....a GREAT player no matter what jersery he pulled on. Players with the ability to turn a game in a split second like Campo, Serge Blanco, Barry John and many others are ALWAYS WELCOME.

Hard to label him as the greatest winger of all time especially since he had to go up against Kirwan who outplayed him quite often. Yet Kirwan is a distant memory in NZ with Lomu as the one to truly be looking at. Rupeni Caucaunibuca is probably the greatest, but because he was not an AB (could you imagine) or a Wallaby, he will not be spoken of. Yet he dominated world rugby for a few seasons just with his skillset, raw speed and power and finesse. I would have Rupeni Caucaunibuca over Campo.

A Winger is only as good as his forward pack. Australia had a sensational tight five and flankers in Campos era. If Lomu does not get the ball he does squat. Campese had a brilliant team around him.....Mark Ella., Tim Horan Jason Little, Dan and Anthony erbet, Farr-Jones, Mick Hawker, Peter Grigg,.....It goes on and on....AND THEY ARE ONLY BACKS. A winger is only as good as his team.....END OF STORY
