David Campese was an absolute talent. He was a professional long before money came into it. The only other winger that came close was Jonah. Jonah Lomu redefined what a winger was. Love to Jonah and his family. Respect

Each afternoon on any patch of grass Fijian kids would play rugby and there would be at least a couple of Campese's and Lomu's on each team.

I used to see David Campese when he had a cafe in Sydney, near Circular Quay. Campese made good coffees too.
To answer the comment on the lush green grass, I'm Irish and it rains here a lot,that's the cloud with the silver lining I suppose, Australia were a fantastic team back then,I was recently watching a game between Australia and Wigan from 1996 and I see the comparison in the physice of the league players compared to today's monsters,training and diet is the difference now,even back then league was a better game than it is now, Australia in both codes back then had real flair and skill,they would run from their own goal line,I can only imagine the union side they would have had if their was no league.
As a New Zealander they were awesome, I had to mention the Ella brothers
What happened to tear jerking moves by runners in rugby? Wingers were lean and agile, centers did not bulldoze their way, they took even the smallest gaps, loosies were ball runners and fetchers. When the French were the most daring team in the world. The French were the masters of almost touch rugby in a 15man game. They ran the ball from their 25. Players like Campo ran from the left flag, doing the side step along the way all the way to try on the right flag. What happened to selling dummy passes by half backs? What happened to little overhead chips(we call it kicking a Pint in South Africa) by scrum halves. Everybody and team is now a South African, Welsh, Irish and English physical robot. We've even taught new fellas, Argentina, Georgia and Japan to be these robots.
Anybody remember what happened the last time a national rugby team dared enough to run the ball? That's when the Japanese stunned the world and beat The Springboks. That's why New Zealand and France has so many fans among South Africans. Don't get me wrong, we will die for the Boks, but we love to see varied kinds of rugby styles. True fans of the game, we South Africans. Anybody?
Back when rugby was great to watch .. and not so much about the money .
Lynagh, Campese, Horan it'll take a lot to see the same in this generation. Reverse passes, go-forward and great interplay etc shows what is missing now.

Quater Final 1991 RWC. Wasn't NZ's greatest game. Went down 16-6 and the ground was Lansdowne Rd in Dublin.

Played as winners in schoolboy rugby union at Bridlington 7's(first time MGS won)loved Union always,don't understand previous comment.

True my man. The Jonah Lomu era was should just have been a passing phase, where a speedy prop or loosie took jersey number 11, 12, 13 or 14. Just like I hope I never live to see a 100kg, 1,9 meter Scrum half. We all love young Jonah, may his soul rest in rugby heaven, but he should have been a passing phase as a winger.
The skill of the Wallabies back in 1991 is far superior to the current team. That is pretty sad

Campese was the best back then, JK would match up well but that goose step and side step was too much.
What's the step difference?
1. No long rugby league style defensive lines in those days......
2. Why were ABs no. 7 and 4 so reluctant to retreat back to their own side at 2:07?
2. Agree - perhaps they were tired? :-) Ian Jones was committed but Carter (7) should have got back to defend the blindside. He just walks. He shouldn't have joined the ruck in the first place as it took him out of the game.
In those days the "lazy retreat" and getting in the way of the passer often resulted in a penalty. In fact the All Blacks at the time did this a lot to obstruct the no 9. They did this a lot on the tour to the UK. The local coaches comapliend about it and I actually remember Aran Pene giving away a penalty v England at Twickenham for lazily coming back from a ruck with his hands up and blocking the link from 9 to 10.

Listening to the commentary that's a veritable who's who of world rugby. Amazing to think how many of those great names and supremely talented players would struggle to make first grade footie now. The game has changed so much.

Very few of them would struggle to make top level football today. Pretty much every player on the field in this game would be a legend in any era.
I was constantly told by Kiwis that David Campese wasn't that good a player. They were very quiet after this game.
they all look so small and skilled... watching the current world cup, it's amazing how roids have (not proved, of course) changed the game.
Nah, there are no roids in Rugby these days. Rugby is a professional sport now. Most of the players this far back had to have actual jobs to support themselves. So they couldn't just train all day every day to get so big and agile. Nowadays players are paid well enough to support themselves full time. So they generally have much more time to train and stay in peak condition all year round.
Roids ?? I know rugby players had a poor diet back then - but not many had hemorrhoids, outside of Scotland at any rate.
@@deathya1 Read an article saying the average weight in the 1987 WCF for each of the centres was 82kgs. The average weight for the centres in 2019 was 100kgs. Massive difference.
The AB's were a shadow of the side that won the cup in 87 really poor.

How Australia could do with the talents of the great Campo, Horan and Lynagh now.
I wonder how he'd go in today's game. Defence is far more structured and disciplined. There's less broken field play. Campo wasn't the best tackler. He'd need to improve in this aspect or the opposition would target his edge, day in day out.
There were skinny blokes on the paddock back in the day. Professional-era teams would steamroll them by physicality alone.
Not a lot of brown skinned blokes there...

I can only comment on the Australian side,it's only a private school game in Australia. So generally it was only kids from well to do backgrounds competing. Even now it's still private schools that only have it in their schools, though scholarships etc allow kids from other backgrounds an opportunity
Ironically, as "Black and Brown" rugby folks in South Africa, at least my generation and before mine(age 45 and older), we do not recognize this current diversity rugby style. Campo's style was our "Black" style representative in world rugby. Jonah Lomu was what we considered a cow in football or a "steam roller"(white rugby) in rugby. He was our "Black guy" in world rugby.
