  • Jonathan Falefasa "Tana" Umaga is a former captain of New Zealand who won 74 caps for his country between 1997 and 2005 scoring 36 tries.
Widely regarded as one of the best All Blacks' three-quarters ever, he began his international career on the wing before a switch to the centre in 2000 where he would go on to cement a reputation as one of the best in the world.
With his trademark dread-locks, he played for the Wellington-based Hurricanes from the inception of Super Rugby in 1996, taking over the captaincy in 2003, until his initial retirement in 2007.
Graham Henry named him as All Blacks captain in 2004 and under his leadership the All Blacks won 19 of their 21 games including the clean sweep of the British and Irish Lions. Despite controversy over the first Test tackle in which he was involved with Keven Mealamu and from which Lions skipper Brian O'Driscoll suffered a tour-ending injury, Umaga was hailed as an inspiring leader.
He then led the All Blacks to a Tri-nations victory and an end of year Grand Slam tour of Europe, making a surprise retirement after the last international against Scotland.
Umaga played for Wellington Lions in the National Provincial Championship and the New Zealand Cup between 1994 and 2007 - racking up 100 appearances.
In 2006 he joined French club side Toulon on a short-term contract after his New Zealand Cup commitments with Wellington and earned a reported £250,000 for his seven-match stay.
After bowing out of New Zealand rugby in at the end of the 2007 New Zealand Cup competition, Umaga re-joined Toulon as coach. He would later resume his playing career during the 2008-09 Top 14 season at the age of 35.
In the 2006 Queen's Birthday Honours Umaga was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of his dedicated service to rugby.
His elder brother, Mike Umaga, who later played as an international for Manu Samoa, preceded him in playing for Petone and Wellington.
In December 2011 Umaga was named head coach at ITM Cup side Counties Manukau, after spending the previous season as a player/coach at the club as well as appearing for the Chiefs in Super Rugby.

absolute masterclass player. people may bang on about the o'driscoll event but they forget when he picked up the welsh captain after Jerry Collins monstered him. play went on, he stopped, put him into recovery position and removed charvis'(?) mouth guard to clear his airways. that is legendary. wainuiomata proud

He was awarded the highest honour in sports for that - the Pierre de Coubertin medal, given out by the IOC (it has predominantly gone to Olympic athletes). Only Kiwi to ever receive it. Other people to get are people like an Italian bobsledder (Eugenia Monti) who gave the British bobsled team a crucial bolt from his own sled so they could race (they then won gold) (he was the first recipient in 1964) and the Croatian 49ers crew who didn’t make the medal race and then leant their (very expensive) boat to a Danish crew whose mast had snapped at the 2008 Olympics and wouldn’t have been able to sail in the medal race otherwise. And because of that the Danish crew won gold. There’s only about 25 people in history that’s won this medal, Tana being one of them. I love sporting achievements but this medal is my favourite award in all sports!

I remember seeing him as a skinny young teenager playing Rugby league for Wainuiomata coming up to Auckland to play in a 9s rugby league tournament at Carlaw park in the early 90s before the warriors came along ,we looked over in the grandstand and saw him, we thought he was the ball boy because he was so small compared to his team mates and they had an impressive side led by Fauono Ken Laban who helped so many young men from the wainuiomata area reach pinnacle heights... watching Tana in these highlight reels is exactly how I remember seeing him back then skillfully balanced off both feet ,always threatens with ball in hand..I also remember Tana and Rubin wiki playing in the centres for the junior kiwis together they were such a good partnership

Michael Wallace must have been a jealousy thing. BOD was the best centre, potentially of all time, and Tana didn’t like it. Shame as BOD was reaching his absolute prime at that time and it would have been good to see him face the all blacks with Wilko and co. Not saying it would have changed the result but just a real shame Tana tarnished his career for acting like a second rate pub player!

-So got my little sis eyes tested, and her first pair of prescript glasses on the spot around 18 months ago. (Didn't know we could ask for the script and look to buy elsewhere..skimmed a few threads here, need PD values and such).
-Bought the 2 pairs starting from $199 thing, one pair with the addons (transitions, anti-glare..), other pair was just back up at the time and no addons.
12 months later due for check-up (same store), Optom said her eyes got worse and suggest to get 'Multifocals' now - and another new frame..? (So she can see far when looking up, and clearer when looking down reading a book for example)
I asked what about these previous frames we bought last year - they said it'll cost more to fit new lenses than to buy fitted new!
      _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Is this some sort of Sales tactic or where they make your eyes worse and and ask for most costlier solutions the next year?
I was thinking of getting the new Singular frames with new lenses like they suggested then, but decided to walk out and browse their styles online first.
Is it professional recommendation to go with Multifocals now instead of 2 for price of 1 (One for reading, One for looking far?)
6 months later (present day due to some personal delays) we are now wanting to buy her new glasses because her now current ones aren't working that good she says.
Should we book a new appointment - how many checks/visits are we covered under Medicare a year? (We already went for test earlier this year)
What 'arrangement/setup' of glasses do you have?
What is best combination to buy from Specsavers (or any other place)? Buy one frame and get it loaded with addons, or should we just buy 2 glasses like before, one every day, one backup (but both multifocals this time)
      We have RACV rewards.
I saw new places I never heard of like Nelson Bailey doing 2 for $199 as well, and Oscar Wylee?
      Also Zenni Optical.
      /rant over...
Thanks and sorry I am totally unaware of much in Optical/consumer things.

Always galls me a bit when I see how he (and Keven Mealamu) are painted by northern hemisphere press, over the O'Driscoll tackle. That has blighted their reputations for 20 years (even if I'm sure both of them don't care) but no-one who's seen them play over the years, or played with or against them, seems to have a bad word to say about them. Sure, it was a horrible tackle, but it was instantly portrayed as deliberate and a way to nobble the Lions' secret weapon. I can understand why BOD would be livid about it, but the insinuations he carried on for years did him no credit at all.
