As an American living in Russia now, I can tell you that if you have face to face conversations with people (not internet chats), almost everyone knows the news is propaganda. This includes all classes and education levels. If you ask Americans if they are under propaganda most people say no. Although the media in the US strangely unites around most wars

it's because our population is indoctrinated to believe that "private enterprise = freedom". so nobody views the media here as propaganda because they think "oh its a private company why would they lie for the government". People don't realize that those private companies are beholden to the industries that manufacture weapons, pharmaceuticals, the finance industry, etc through advertising contracts. the same people who have bought the government, which turns them into essentially a mouthpiece for those fascistic interests.
it's the insidiousness of capitalism, large-scale oppression masked by the illusion of "freedom"

As a russian myself writing this comment straight from Moscow I totally agree. Every single person I know is aware of propaganda. Still I can assume that the only kind of people who thinks that they are out of the scope of propaganda he could have talked to are people who don't watch TV mostly consuming news from youtube and such. For some reason they tend to think that if they are not watching federal channels and news they won't get brainwashed.
The other interesting thing is the definition of propaganda itself. I've met full grown up and well-educated individuals saying something like " I know better cause I watch BBC / CNN / some random youtube blogger and they / he is telling the real truth "

Love the clip starting out with Lex talking about propaganda. "Everyone is convinced that anyone who disagrees with them is only convinced of that because of propaganda. While simultaneously being confident that they themselves are not under the influence of propaganda." That idea explains so many of our problems with communication today.

To play devil's advocate... All of American and European media has been insisting this entire time that Russia is losing horribly and Ukraine is winning fantastically.
Russian media has said that Russia is winning.
Now, over the past several days, European and American media have become much more dire with their outlook of Ukrainian victory, and they are admitting that the Russian military is making significant gains and winning significant victories.
There are plenty of journalists, including some stationed in Eastern Ukraine, who went from mocking Russian forces to panic and gloom and doom in just 24 hours.
So... Which media sources were closer to the truth there?
Edit- Russian media also maintained that there were biolabs funded by the Pentagon operating in Ukraine. Western media denied that. But then American government officials admitted it.

The civil war with some russian involvement had been going on since around 2014, did Putin seriously have that little info on how they would respond? With how easy it is to insert spies in Ukraine? I appreciate that Lex is an academic mind who is an expert in many fields but the nuances, pros and cons of certain ways of waging war in the midst of a full on global disinformation campaign probably eludes him.

It's always interesting to watch people talking about things they think they understand (in this case Russia, Russians in general, Putin, Ukraine, Zelensky), and completely miss the fact that they look at their conversation's subjects through a glass prism of their own biased views on the world. In this case, obviously, a very American view.
Same thing happens here in Russia, when people talk about the US.
I'd love to see Joe Rogan interview an American citizen and a real Russian citizen (I mean someone living in Russia, not someone like Lex who is basically American since 11 y.o. and therefore has a very distorted view on modern Russians), and see them clash (peacefully of course). That would be a very eye-opening experience for everyone I think.

I am sorry for a lack of clear thinking from me about this crisis. It is too personal at this time, I have family in both places, and all I can think about is the fear, suffering, anger, and hate I see and hear directly from people I love on both sides. I constantly feel that I'm failing them and myself. I wish I was smarter or could understand the situation deeper. Please instead listen to people much more intelligent than me, for example the two I interviewed recently who give differing perspectives on this war:

Yeah Joe is adding that when people can't find their own meaning they look for a strong man to provide them the vision.
Jesus prob was an average guy at his day but he created something that lead people for 2000 years.
Elon Musk today is providing a vision of going to mars, maybe it will not be appreciated today , but in 1000 years his idea or him directly will be regarded as a GOD.
And there will be a mythical story told to raise him even beyond the mere human that he was.
Giving people a vision and a meaning which can last them for thousands of years very few people can do something like that.
Him managing to create Tesla and Space X will serve as the real foundation that if you put your mind to it and work really really hard you can achieve it.
That's what people want and need.
We just need a good compelling story and if it's based on reality even better.
Elon Musk could have failed his third launch could have crashed and destroyed both his companies that day , he would be regarded as nobody today as a charlatan.

Since he keeps bringing up India liking Putin, let me, an Indian, clarify certain things (of course I do not claim to represent all Indians and this is my view only). India/Indians have a historical liking towards American society (liberty, wealth, rationality, science, movies etc) but a simultaneous distrust towards their government (for their support for British empire, Pakistani and Afghani jihadis, apartheid S. Africa etc plus their constant need to put down our aspirations eg sanctions and assassinations for nuclear testing, interference in Kashmir issue etc). We may or may not like Putin, but we do support the Russian people and the Russian state for they have been a long-standing ally (especially for military/arms support, including their support for India in the 1971 war when USA+uk sent their fleets to enforce the genocide and mass rape of my people, the Bengalis, by Pakistan). Moreover, India has traditionally been in favour of a global status quo (as opposed to a unipolar world, whether led by either Russia/China/USA) that allows smaller, developing nations to have a political say/value, instead of being steamrolled by a hegemonic power. Ukraine itself aided Pakistan with offensive weapons. Hence, we Indians are rather hesitant to unnecessarily throw in our lot with the NATO. That being said, we do not hate/dislike Americans/Russians/Ukrainians, we love all of you + nor do we have any special liking for any particular western politician (though we do appreciate if they recognize us as a equal partner and show interest in developing a relationship with us).

Do we actually vote for president or we vote for a figurehead? It appears like if we are interfering with Somalia for decades yet we don't have the same president for decades and that can go towards Afghanistan but yet the presidents change and things stay the same. They feed us rhetoric and they divide us just like they do with Thailand and China and Korea and even in Ukraine. IMHO the best source of information is to come and see for yourself. I'm a sailor, so I've travelled around the world and seen some things. Last time I've been to Syria we had some main engine malfunction, so we had to stay here for a while. During this time we were visiting several locations. There was an event in a town we were passing by. US marines checkpoint was surrounded by locals and some of them were armed. People yelled and threw some junk at yanks. They were quite pissed at those USMC guys, probably not without a reason. Situation got quite explosive so marines had to get out of there. A week later in Tartus we saw several russian checkpoints here and there and you know what? People seemed to like them. I've asked some locals about what they think of those russian guys. One Syrian soldier told me a story about earlier time when they fought against ISIS. There was a small town attacked by a large ISIS force. The town itself had only few russian paratroopers protecting it for quite a while and they were completely surrounded and running low on everything. That Syrian soldier was a part of a relief force send to aid russians. They couldn't lift the siege for a long time and he was sure that those russians didn't make it. They dug in at some small factory administrative building, the whole territory was covered with bodies the building itself was almost razed to the ground. But to his amazement he found russians alive. There was a single guy still standing, most others were heavily wounded, those that managed to remain conscious were still holding guns even when they couldn't even walk. The remaining guy tied his squad with hand grenades and everyone there was ready to die, but they got saved. That Syrian soldier was touched by the fact that russians fought for his homeland literally to their last breath like it was their own. Damn, you can say all you want but I've been in that country myself and saw with my own eyes how locals admire and respect russians and I'm sure that you can understand why after this story. West treats those people like second sort and calls their home a third world country, on top of that US forces razed several cities to the ground. At the same time russian soldiers are ready to die for them.. Things I saw expose all that bunch of lies and hypocrisy we get from official media. I refuse to believe that russians treat Ukrainians worse since they are their kin. So if you want to know the real thing come and see it for yourself. By believing in what someone tells you're not getting any real knowledge, but only buy their opinions, as Alan Watts once said. Have a good one and may the waves be good where you are.

Entirely agree. They know nothing about Ukraine. All their knowledge about Ukraine is based on information from English language media or based on Russian propaganda starting even from the beginning of the last century. Like ruzzia told there were no hunger in Ukraine in 1930s and all countries believed ruzzia. And once Ukraine wanted to tell the world about the hunger which was caused by ruzzia, a few countries believed and support Ukraine in that. I can tell that ruzzia did a very good job in terms of presenting Ukraine from abad perspective.

6:48 as someone who lived 10 years in Ukraine, it's always funny to see people who seem to know much say ''east side is for Russia and the west is for Ukraine''. I lived in Sumy, that's east of Ukraine, 80 km from Russia. And in my 10 years there I only heard some 65+ years old people positively talk about russia. Further, everyone was biased.
But of course some places, as Donetsk, are more pro russian because the people who live there are russian... Because of the Holodomor, the femine russia created in ukraine in the 90's, many ukrainians died and russia placed russians there. Most of them were inmates who got a deal to live freely but work in the mines in Donetsk.
Now the same thing is happening in Mariupol. Russia killed off many ukrainians, and is now rebuilding the city and placing russians there.

Think Lex got the narrative on internal conflicts in Ukraine wrong. The “pro-Russia” vs “pro-west” divide existed pre-2014, but since then (after Russia took Crimea and entered the war in the east to Ukraine) the public opinion was decisively western oriented, which is the platform on which Zelensky was elected by overwhelming majority. The decline in ratings was consequence of failing to deliver change, but not because the population disagreed on the course.

Couple questions? If that’s okay, I’ve Just been wondering actual Ukrainian takes(and even if you are a “nationalist”, just speaking objectively as possible): do you believe this was inevitable & how much do you personally place the west’s influence at blame? This is unverified & I couldn’t get a reply from the person (they were also VERY pro-Russia so likely regurgitating their state media’s talking points) but they seem to feel Nationalists there both have heavily pressured Zalenskyy & also were equal or greater aggressors concerning the fighting in Crimea & the Donbas w/pro-Russian groups… guess what I’m asking is do you think zalenskyy is compromised by the west or nationalists at all? And how much would you say the in-fighting has played into this outside of just the NATO move?
*oh and lastly, do you think maintaining Eurasian ties instead of having the move towards European/western ties in 2014 could’ve kept Ukraine independent? As in could Ukrainians-Rus ties have been kept in good standing without Putin attempting to assimilate your country back into his control/made it a Vassal government ?
