The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N 6MT Is A Crazy Fun & Affordable Turbo Sport Compact

  • Gone are the days of the #HyundaiElantra being just a boring commuter car that gets no respect for enthusiasts. The first-ever #HyundaiElantraN would put many of its competitors to shame with tis rowdy sounding exhaust system, nearly 300 HP from a 2.0L turbo engine, and the choice of a 6-speed MT or an 8-speed DCT. The new #ElantraN perfectly straddles the line between a Civic Si and Type R or Volkswagen GTI and Golf R. It's one of the most desirable new sport compacts money can buy.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Hyundai is definitely getting the last laugh in the sport compact segment with the new Elantra N! For those of you out there that still doubt Hyundai/Kia as makers of performance vehicles... you simply haven't driven vehicles like this and you should... Because the upcoming 2023 GR Corolla and Type R is going to have to contend with this car when they come out and we expect both the Honda and Toyota to cost at least $5,000 more.

The 2022 Kona N handbrake is leather covered and blue-stitched. Puzzling why the Elantra N's isn't. I also appreciate the fact that the Kona N driver's seat is power-operated. The front seats also are more accommodating for an empty-nester enthusiast like myself, who is broader in the beam than I was way back in my boy-racer days.

Excellent review! I’ve had my Cyber Gray Elantra N DCT for about a month now. Being in my mid-40s I was a little worried I’d feel like a 20 y/o driving it, and you know what, I do lol. But that’s ok, it makes me feel like a kid again and I’m really just enjoying the fun aspects of it like the incredible exhaust, amazing steering feel and great acceleration (the NGS button is like my Fast and Furious NOS hit ha ha). I’ve gotten so many compliments on it and people stare at it trying to figure out what kind of car it is. It is cheap in certain areas and the seats are not comfortable, but I’m ok with that because the good still far outweighs the bad. I just think, “because race car” when my hips are sore from the bolsters lol. It’s such a fun car.

The key for me was not putting my seat as far back as I might usually put it, which might seem counter intuitive, but because of the steep angle up on the bottom cushion the less my legs are straight and instead are “forced” to be at an angle matching the incline, the more comfortable I can get.

Ive had my EN DCT in Ceramic White for a month. Absolutely loving it so far. Only problem I have is the paint thickness. If you like to tailgate, drive in a rough/dirty area, or are going to track it you NEED to get this car wrapped. I already have a chip and a scuff mark on the red strip near where the N is imprinted. Can only see it on close inspection but still.
Other than that its great to me. Quick, torque hits hard and fast. Shifts quick and does it smoothly under normal acceleration. Sounds incredible. Can power through corners with no loss of grip. Really dont feel or sense any cheapness in it. I dont care that a part of the door is plastic, its not a Lexus. Comfortable seats. I often have hour long drives and no problems, whereas the GT2 package seats in my Forte GT were awful.
The infotainment and gauge cluster look great, fast, and clear. Good mileage in eco/normal mode (35mpg highway in real world, up to 38). Spacious back seat. I could go on but point is this car is great. No regrets at all. I still get looks and comments daily too in it.

The thing is that the Civic SI isn't really cheaper bc the stealerships try to mark it up. They tried to sell me a MT for 35k. They said it is an "exclusive car" I told them they need an exclusive buyer. It just feels douchie and snobby. I test-drove that 6-speed Elantra N and was blown away. After 6 months I am even more blown away. I tracked the car and it was amazing. It is the funniest car I have ever owned and you don't need bolt-ons for this car - it is already designed that way bc they know what we want and delivered. It needs a lower motor mount, a tune, and maybe wheels. If they made this car AWD it would be perfect. BTW, Honda called me back after a couple months about that Civic SI they still had. I told them thank you for marking that thing up. I would have bought it and never would have known about this Elantra N that I got for 34k out the door. please do a review on the 2017-2019 Fusion Sport, they are pretty badass unknown sleepers (the equivalent of a baby Taurus SHO) they are AWD twin turbo V6 from the factory and make 325hp and 380ftlbs stock with a 6 speed auto and electronic dampening suspension they are pretty loaded for the price. The suspension literally firms up in Sport mode electronically and the handle capabilities basically double, less body roll, less front end nose dive under hard braking, and at high speeds on a bumpy road it makes the car alot more controllable! Just trying to get one of my favorite overlooked cars out there so they can be appreciated. The reason I'd say they are pretty unknown is they only made them for 3 years and made less than 28,000 of them all together even though they were faster than the Taurus SHO they were kind of over looked I'd say cause the SHO was produced twice as long as had 40 more HP, but here is the kicker though the Fusion makes 40ftlbs more torque! And with a turn they gain over 100hp!

Some of what was implemented doesn't make entire sense. Suggests some features were there to fill voids or meet standards. I've had mine for 4 months now and I'll tell you the launch control isn't that great. I've had way better launches feathering the clutch myself. Launch causes it to bounce more than I like. We'll see if that changes once I install my engine mount

Not that the nose is bad enough to keep me out of it, but yeah, My very first thought is I wish the nose was painted just like the N-line, and had mettalic orange and a mettallic any other color available. Intense Blue only way to go IMO, or black, but blacks not my deal. For now I'm still enjoying my like new ELantra Sport with catless DP in grey. On looks alone, I wish Hyundai would have skipped developing a US market Elantra for the latest gen and just brought the damn I30 N sedan over, the EN doe look pretty good to me now though.

Im seriously thinking of getting one but the price where I live is ridiculously high. Commonly they are priced around $42,995 usd but then I saw how Subaru WRX and hondas are almost $16,000 above the MSRP I am really thinking of going for it but sadly there's no way for me to go for that nice actual MSRP. Not to mention that anyone might suggest a type r those are standing at the $65,000 USED.

I would look elsewhere if I were you, different county/city/even state. I found a Hyundai dealer 7 miles from me that has a $5000 dollar markup on the Ns if you can find one. But there are supposed to be very few Korean dealers out there with msrp.

I'm thinking about trading in my 17 SS Sedan for one of these in Intense Blue with the 6-speed manual, but I also want to wait and see what kind of updates and upgrades the Elantra N will get in the next few years for its mid-cycle refresh model years.
Will Hyundai up the power on the 2.0T to be right in line with the GR Corolla, MK8 Golf R, FL5 Civic Type R, and eventually the future coming Integra Type S in the 300hp mark or will they upgrade to the 2.5T engine with a bigger turbocharger to get that 300hp number that the G70 2.5T and the Stinger GT-Line has? Will they offer synthetic leather or full leather on the N's sport bucket seats? Will they offer soft touch materials on the emergency (parking) brake, top of the dashboard, back doors? Will they offer more interior color options? Will Hyundai have an answer to implementing wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple Carplay for the bigger infotainment screen?
This is stuff you want to wait on to see how much the car will improve later on.
The FL5 Civic Type R and GR Corolla are on the way in, and the Integra Type S hopefully officially gets announced before the end of this year and starts being worked on in the new year and gets revealed as a late 2024 model year by the end of next year. Yes, those cars will be more expensive than the Elantra N, but the Elantra N is still a worthy and valid choice unless you're willing to spend the extra money for the more nicer and more powerful cars.

Yeah, I wish there were more color choices with performance compacts these days in the US market. I'm waiting to see if they ever decide to offer a metallic grey or something and if they decide to change the styling slightly, like paint the nose like N-line, or get rid of the tacky red stuff that to me seems to only fit a black car the best. Intense Bleu is easily the only viable color option on the menu right no IMO, or black, but that's not a color.🍻🍻
