  • The diesel inboard on your boat has stopped working. The electrics are all working okay, so it's likely to be the fuel system. Knowing how to trace the fuel system and troubleshoot it at each point is key. Rubicon 3's (www.rubicon3.co.uk) Bruce Jacobs shows Matthew Sheahan how to do it.
    Yachting Monthly's How To series is brought to you in association with GJW Direct.

    Hi good video - one thing that might be worth mentioning particularly if you are new to the boat or someone else has used the engine. Check the engine stop lever has not been left pulled out! Sometimes this cannot be seen if not adjacent to the start key.

    It might be worth mentioning the return fuel system. You won't get very far on one can of fuel that is being returned to the main tank!

    Most common failures is Vacuum leaks! ... Make sure any connection is connected well... Even the non using taps on the Delphi pre-filter may leak ..... Use brass gasket rings and make sure the hose connections are tight

    That's only bled part of the low pressure side of the system, there will still be air in the line between the secondary filter and the injector pump. You need to loosen the bleed on the pump and repeat the process using the lift pump lever.
    Then there will still be air in the high pressure side of the system, a lot of engines are self bleeding but if anyone here is genuinely stuck and their engine still isnt running you need to crack your injectors off and turn your engine over on the key until you see fuel coming out of each. (Do this one at a time, and be ready for the engine to possibly fire before you get to the last injector)
    Remember to shut your seacock off so you dont flood the engine with water and dont have it turning over for more than 10 seconds at a time so you dont fry your starter (let it cool off for a bit between turning).
    If your engine still isnt running then it's not a problem with air in the fuel.

    When opening the fuel separator to look for water contamination. Do you need to bleed that filter after draining some fuel from the bottom of the filter?

  • @lucasspaniard8430
    @lucasspaniard8430 Před 2 lety +4

    Emergency into a jerry can is great, but don’t forget to mention that the jerry can will have a much decreased range if your engine is set up with a fuel return. You would need to unhook the fuel return and place it in your jerry can as well to get proper fuel consumption.

    • @enriquelorenzo5476
      @enriquelorenzo5476 Před 2 lety +2

      If you don't connect the fuel return, the only thing that will happen is a greater consumption of diesel, right?

    • @lucasspaniard8430
      @lucasspaniard8430 Před 2 lety +2

      @@enriquelorenzo5476 yes, as in it will cycle fuel from your Jerry can into your fuel tank. (cooling injector system) I meant to try this with my Yanmar to see what the hourly consumption increase is. I know if you feel your fuel tank after a few hours of operation, it will feel quite warm.

  • @MrBluoct

    Any time frame when one believes the injectors are “gummed up” and the spray pattern compromised because the boat / motor had been stored for an extended amount of time ?
    And if cleaning injectors is ideal vs new
    I believe once the spray pattern is compromised, the injectors nozzle spray does not ... “self correct” with any type of fuel tank additives or magic potions ...
    Then trouble shooting the injector pump - how?
    Those two parts on my 2gm20?were the issue on an otherwise perfect little 900 hour motor
