Totals have more to do with longevity than what a player was actually doing in his prime. And we know Chicago Bulls Jordan without retiring in 93, he would be 2nd all time and without retiring in 98 and playing 2 more years in his prime probably 1st.
It didn’t happen, but with the per game average we have an idea of what this man was capable of doing and probably would also be 1st in steals also.

If you consider the inflation of statistics in this era due to rule changes you'd see a major difference. The final scores in the 90s was around 80 to 90 points per team. These days they are over 110. Its not the same. You wouldn't see Westbrook avg a triple double in the 90s or Harden scoring 30 to 40 ppg then.

I believe it’s an ignorant way of thinking. It depends on what the context of the discussion is about. If it’s something only a player would have experience with such as deciding who’s harder to guard, then their opinion is more validated but their answer is exclusive to them and how they matched up with said players and not a 100% factual answer. So it’s just all about the context of the question asked.

I am with all of those guys when they ranked those 3's the way they did (MJ, then Kobe, then Lebron) but when they talked about what Lebron has to do to surpass the others...I say that's BS. And it's funny because they say you can't talk about basketball if you didn't play the game...because most of the time, it's probably true.
But when being asked what Lebron should do to surpass Kobe or MJ...their answers is staight up BS. You can't say (just by definition) that a player has to do LESS (litteraly) to surpass somebody else. To surpass somebody, the answer is simple, you have to do more than he did or be straight up better.
Like what does the fact of winning with 3 different team has to do with being the best? Nothing...that's straight up garbage logic. I'm sorry if it sounds disrespectful but it's true. I'm not a Lebron fan even though I know very well his career just because I'm a basketball fan overall but adding stats...meaningless or empty stats to his legacy is not gonna make him better than Kobe.
Now maybe he is already better than Kobe (I don't believe that) but that's not the point. The point is that to surpass somebody, you have to do more than that person, period. There is no way around him and that's not my opinion. That's a fact...it's true in basketball and it's true in any field in life.

I loved this conversation! So much better listening to players/former players. Perspective on this is great...GOAT convo has to me always been premature with LeBron. My personal rank for top 10 is:
    1. Michael Jordan
    2. Bill Russell
    3. Magic Johnson
    4. Kobe Bryant
    5. Kareem
    6. Tim Duncan
    7. Larry Bird
    8. Shaq
    9. LeBron
    10. Hakeem
LeBron is the only one still playing and has room to climb, 9 conference championships doesn't hold as much weight considering the era and especially the eastern conference at that time, which was somewhat revealed in LeBron's teams' 18W-31L record in the Finals. Many of the playoff series in the West during LeBron's run were more competitive than the actual Finals. But it's not said and done yet. Glad these guys are talking, gives more balance.

      @calebsteingruber6906 Před 4 lety +1

@@cornbreadpassion11 good question, to be honest I think Duncan is largely underappreciated, and for me ranking 4-7 was the hardest and tightest. However, as underappreciated as Duncan is I think the supporting cast around him was even more so, when I think of Parker, Manu, Green (Boris Diau was an unsung hero), and it Kawhi at the end...Those Spurs teams that were going up against the Heatles were some of my favorites (giving James the highest point differential in NBA Finals history. Honestly Duncan fits all my criteria for top 5, so 4-7 for me was really preference. Maybe I have Kobe ahead of Tim for the same reason I have Jordan over Russell? On the offensive skills side Kobe was just so versatile, and the degree of difficulty on shots with what he made look effortless was astounding, with many former players calling him the hardest to guard, as well as 9x all-defensive. I just prefer Kobe, I'm also a 4th generation Lakers fan going back to my great grandfather cheering the Minneapolis Lakers. I'd never begrudge someone putting Duncan higher, but I think he was also a part of some of the very best teams ever, of which his supporting cast almost gets no mention. A good question, thank you. Cheers!

For me, I cant put anyone but MJ at #1, but after that its hazy. If youre talking a combination of legacy, lasting impact on the league, everything about their career and what they did for the league in their time, I think you have to go
      1. MJ
      2a. Magic
      2b. Bird
2c. Lebron/Kobe/make your case for whoever else
The lasting impact these guys had on the league far surpasses anything anyone else has done really. Think about how Magic and Bird revived the NBA when it was on its last legs, and it allowed MJ to make it such a globalized sport, and paved the way for superstars today. I left them all at #2, because 2-4 is interchangeable really. Magic and Bird both deserve the spots though, and right next to each other; cant have one without the other. Objectively speaking I think this is the best most fair list, because you cant really deny the amount of impact and exactly how iconic Lebron/Kobe/Bird/Magic/MJ were. MJ is the most iconic, and the GOAT, but hes #1 for a reason.
