41000 miles, Cadillac ATS4 2.0T Differential Noise? Back to the Dealer!

- The rear end in my 2015 Cadillac ATS started making noise (at least I think it's the rear end). I inspected it. I changed the fluid. But since it's under warranty, I'm dropping it off at the dealership for diagnosis and repair.

Damn bud, I feel for you! I have a 2015 ats 3.6 premium with performance pkg. Not a single issue yet other than a a low coolant but suspect was never filled from factory. Topped off and fine. I have same exact mileage almost. 40986!!! Lol. I absolutely love my ats!!! I hope they take car of you.
That’s fantastic! It’s my fav car ever. Amazing ride 😎👍 Hope this round fixes it for good!
Wow a lot of issues for your car (I've seen your other videos on the caddy). You're lucky it's still under warranty. On my '92 DeVille I had many years ago (it was the first gen of the full time auto adjusting suspension) I started experiencing a lot of electrical issues once the car was over 6 years old (corrosion on relays and modules). I ended up getting rid of the car (don't get me wrong I LOVED it) because I was being nickel and dimed to death to the tune of $500-$700 each time I brought it in - and that was back in 1998!! And you are right good dealer service is key!!
I suspect Vermont will eat this car alive like yours. I’ll drive it till I can’t 😎
@@sstressfl I hear ya! Issues aside, it looks like a sweet car!
@@Skips1964 it’s an absolute joy to drive 😎 Thank you for sharing my friend 🙏
love that color interior colo, grat ATS videos! good luck with yours
Thank you 🙏👍
Thanks for your posting! I totally love mine. I have an ATS 3.6.performance and at 92000 it begun to make a noise like a jet once I accelerate. All else is perfect. Wish Cadillac would make m' again. What am I going to do when it reaches the 300, 000 miles!!?😂
I traded mine but it was an amazing car minus the numerous problems especially the rear differential issues I experienced. Too bad. But I am relieved to be out from under it now.
I'm try fluid change. Since dealer wanted $4,200 to change differential.. and apparently after answer question they said I need a new one but didn't open it or look at it.. didnt out fluid in.. just said it's bad. Asked if fluid was low said its probably bad did u ever change it. We said to change it at 50k. (Not my car. GF has prepaid service from another dealer) so I don't think they even looked at the fluid.
The rear differentials in the ATS are hit or miss. It's not uncommon to see failures. I hope you find a good and more affordable solution.
The differential fluids help prevent this problem. Eventually everyone will have to replace it as cars age but u can extend the life of it if u change the fluids
There is a serious manufacturing issue with these rear diffs. Not your usually situation. My oem went at 20k (it was smooth when I brought it to the dealer for an unrelated issue), my second failed in less than 1000 miles, my third failed in less than 1000 miles. Lots of research on these junky rear diffs. No amount of fluid will save it. They’re just poor quality. Hit or miss. Some go long with zero maintenance. Some fail even with top quality frequent fluid changes. Or as my buddy told me, his wife’s ats went thru 4 before they found a good one.
I think this is the best looking cadillac ever, except the size
I’m getting mine back off a recall locked up on me at 70mph lucky to be alive
Wow!!! So glad you're ok! What's the deal on the recall? On the rear diff?
And I have a 68 Cadillac coupe deville with no issues at 97k ..they don’t make cars like they used to
Wow... ‘68! Stunning car 😎
@@sstressfl thank you
Not that this car isnt great in the snow but I also keep mine garaged in the winter because i live in upstate ny and only daily drive it in the summer. So that helps a little probably.
My caddy is my winter beater lol I drive my motorcycle in the summer 😎
Just bought my 2016 ats 2.0t awd🙏🏽 bought it used with 48k miles
What color did ya get? How you likin it??
Awd front + rear diff fluids severe using change interval is at 45, 000 mi. If nothing else is going on ....!??
2018 ATS 55k miles, Just started to whine, heading in next week.
Hoping you have a great experience and a quick fix my friend 🙏
What did they say?
Oh why don’t you just trade it in lol😂 I have a 2014 with nearly 104k miles zero issues! Love it
Cuz I love it too!! I still have it ya know 💪😎
@@sstressfl I am surprised it’s a GM with no issues , also had a 2020 Equinox with the same engine no issues traded it for BMW 3 series, which I also love. 2 competitors in the same driveway lol
How is the 2014 ATS 2.0 holding up so far? I'm considering getting one cause there is a really good deal in my area. I've been hearing mixed reviews on this car. Is it a hit or miss?
I feel like you have had so many issues with your ats 🤣. Poor guy. I bought mine new. Just hit 50,000 miles and not 1 issues.
That is really great to hear!! There is hope at the end of this tunnel :)
I replaced mine at 70000 drove it to a 100000 now it leaped
leaked?
@@sstressfl so disappointed $2,000 GM in the crate part new differential now one of the drive shaft seals are leaking sick I will never buy another Cadillac no way this should happen and I drive Highway work only
@@alancall5113 Seriously unacceptable quality, especially because its supposed to be GMs top of the line vehicle. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I went thru 3 rear diffs by the time I was at 40k miles.
Hey there, did you ever try popping it into neutral and notice that the noise goes away? So, you only hear it when in drive or reverse? Thanks
I did… and the problem was more pronounced under high gear light acceleration load.
@@sstressfl Thanks, got a '17 ctx with this issue. I guess replacing the differential is the solution.
I have a 2018 cadillac cts 2.0 T its making a weird sound when i accelerate vibration thumping sound can it be the same issue you had when you had your cadillac?
I think so. The 2018 has the 8 speed with an oiling problem. It fills the trans with metal and clutch filings. The filter becomes saturated and causes line pressure to drop. Fluid becomes so filled with debris it doesn’t function properly. My 6 speed did the same thing but mostly due to excessive break in material. The 8 speed usually needs a proper power flush to fix it. And then to keep it from happening again, on-going flushes every 30k miles.
@sstressfl thanks for responding I really appreciate your input.
@@johnnyirizarry1276you’re welcome. I hope that is helpful and you can fix your issue.
@sstressfl I called cadillac dealer they mentioned that they can flush the transmission see if that can fix the issue. But I got a feeling it's only a temporary fix
@@johnnyirizarry1276 the 8 speed, by GMs own admission, has a design flaw that restricts proper oiling. This causes it to eat itself. Owners have found that they need to have a flush on a regular basis to keep it working (I have read every 30k miles). Here's some details about the results of a class action lawsuit brought against GM regarding the 8 speed: www.cohenmilstein.com/federal-judge-certifies-massive-class-action-lawsuit-against-general-motors-transmission/
You said you had a tricky vacuum leak. Can you tell me more about this? My check engine light came on and then back off but the code was "to lean". I think i might have the same issue. My 2014 Cadillac ats does not drive smooth. The cars shaky, rough shifting. I hate the way it's been driving. Check engine light off now but 3 different shops cant duplicate the problem.
I had a lean condition, but my spark plugs were heavily carbon fouled. The car was dumping more fuel into the system to compensate for the lean condition. Since I was under warranty, I took it to the experts :) The mechanic was very methodical. He did a smoke test. Nothing. He started removing stuff to see what would happen. He took some vac hoses off, and when he plugged the hoses with his hand the engine smoothed out. So he discovered that one of the active motor mounts and some of the connected vac hoses were leaking. He replaced them and the engine has NEVER been SOOO smooth.
@@sstressfl Thank you so much for the reply. I was told I have to wait for my check engine light to come back on in order to find the issue. I really don't feel comfortable doing that as the car drives rough. So I've been trying to diagnose the problem. Thank you again
@@fallonanastase6901 the code is still in the car’s computer. My light was not on and they were still able to retrieve it. You could also pull a plug. I bet it’s very carbon fouled.
@@sstressfl The first cadillac dealership I went to said they cleared all the codes after they couldn't duplicate the problem. I've been pointed in all directions from the engine and transmition but apparently the cars in "great condition" ... Haven't gave up yet lol
@@fallonanastase6901 Sometimes resetting the light can help them diagnose. Hopefully it "breaks" and they have something to fix so you can get your car right again. When I bought my car I went through the whole thing to make sure it was tuned up. There was a large mouse nest in the airbox! I put in a nice new K&N. Then I cleaned the intake path. It had puddles of oil inside. I ran CRC valve and turbo cleaner through it. Made a big difference in smoothness. No more lumpy idle. I changed the oil. Full synthetic. Started using Valvoline Dexos 2... similar to what GM specs on some turbo cars in europe. It's stable. It doesnt evap in high heat. And I don't lose a drop between oil changes. I also change my oil when the oil monitor reaches the 30% level. High quality name brand premium fuel only. And Techron fuel treatment/cleaner every Spring to help keep the fuel injectors clear. My conclusion is this car needs to be in a high state of tune at all times or it just doesn't run very well.
I’ve heard the shudder is normal
That is the lie I was told initially. But mine doesnt shudder anymore. If you have the 8 speed, a powerflush and new filter about every 30k miles is needed to keep the shudder at bay. If you have the 6 speed auto (like mine) and it shudders, same fix. Flush and filter. But the 6 speed should not need on-going flushes. If the rear end is failing thats an entirely different issue and feels diff than transmission shudder.
Any update from the dealer on the issue?
Check my channel! I have a Cadillac ATS playlist where I post updates 👍
What year is it
2015! It sat on a dealers lot for 3 years so it still has a big chunk of warranty left on it. So thankful!
@@sstressfl I got a 2014
Im sorry for your headaches but dont buy American cars!! Seriously, they are cheaply built and depreciate in value far faster than anything else out there.
I understand what you’re saying. Many people feel the same way as you and for good reason. But I will always shop American cars first. I’ve had phenomenal performance from most of my cars and I support our auto workers. Cadillac so far has taken care of these issues for me and has been very responsive. I guess I will always have Detroit in my blood 😎
