    One maintenance item you should include on your list is the belt and pulleys. The idler pulley and belt shredded and left me on the highway waiting for the flat bed tow truck. I shut the motor off because the dash had every light come on and the I drive bong was going crazy with warnings for everything , the no power steering was the dead give away that the belt was gone. My advice is not to turn the car on, wait for the wrecker the belt just had started to enter my crank seal, I was very lucky that none of the belt got into the oil pan, changed front seal and a new belt and pulleys and the car has been perfect ever since the incident. I don't understand why the pulleys are made of plastic, brake cleaner or any chemical sprayed on the front of the motor will lead to disaster, the pulleys melt like butter.

    May as well mention the oil pan gasket being a huge job (subframe out). Something that’s very common with around 100k

    Put the key in the lock , turn and hold it to the lock position and the windows and sunroof will close.
    If you have an alarm on the thing, press the lock button, after you hear the beep press and hold it again and look at the red light on the mirror and after the light turns off release the button. the car is alarmed, but the proximity sensor is off so you could leave your windows down the alarm won't go off.
    BMW sells a spare tire kit with a space saver tire you could get a small 12v compressor with tire sealant

    You’ve mentioned a few times that you can’t find the headlight washer nozzle cover. Strange. They’re easy to find on Amazon, which is where I got mine for 2008 E90. Less than 20 bucks for a pair. Only problem is they only come in black or grey so you’ll have to paint them.

    Pro tip on the wipers. After you buy a new set for the winter (or whenever) save your old ones (or at least one of your old blades) so if/when one flies off, you'll have a spare to get you home to order a new one. I always have a spare used wiper blade in all my beasts for that reason.

  • @JakeSDN
    @JakeSDN Před 3 lety +1

    ONLY BUY THE MANN OIL FILTER. You can maybe use a Mahle.
    I used a mix of Royal Purple power steering fluid with CHF 11s if I plan to have a power steering leak, because Royal Purple’s Synerlec sticks to what it touches.
    I some people are going to have an issue with the following, but I use Royal Purple HPS oil because I did not like the dry engine sound the engine would make when I started it. BMW’s recommendation for oil(Castrol) is not appropriate. Use good oil.

    Hey Nathan, you’ve helped me navigate some pretty tough BMW issues in the past. I have a tricky one for you... I changed the battery on my 04 X5 3.0i. I live in Canada, so it has the American spec etc. I have a battery light on constantly and also at higher speeds (80+ kph) it will flash - seems to be rev related. Any guesses on what the hell is going on?!?

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  Před 3 lety +2

      Probably the alternator is going , hook a bolt meter or it when it’s running. And check the voltage , should be at least 13v , if you have a scanner you can check voltage driving at the speed

    • @englishbuilds
      @englishbuilds Před 3 lety +1

      Nathans BMW Workshop - I just fitted a brand new alternator :( as I did this test before & was only reading 11.5! So I knew that had to be replaced. I’ll redo the test wirh the new alt on though.

    • @englishbuilds
      @englishbuilds Před 3 lety

      Nathans BMW Workshop - I don’t believe it! Brand new alternator! (And you know what a pain they are to fit) and I’m still only getting 11v when it’s running! So it’s not charging! This can’t be an alternator issue! The battery is new too. I’m just charging it fully to ensure the battery is good. 🤦🏻 now what! It’s endless with this thing!

    • @xcofcd
      @xcofcd Před 3 lety +1

      @@englishbuilds check voltage directly on the alternator outlet and it's housing not on the battery and tell us what you get there. Could be a cable problem like the engine mass cable. But check the volage directly on the alternator fist. Also check if your battery light goes out with higher rpm 3000 and above. It could be related to the small cable from the alternator to the instrument cluster/battery light.

    • @englishbuilds
      @englishbuilds Před 3 lety

      moinmoin thanks for the tips. I’ll run all these checks in the morning and keep you posted. I’m sure others can learn from this fault finding too.

    I just put a N52 in my 330i. Not sure how long the motor was sitting before I bought it but it's got a terrible lifter tick. Is this normal for an engine that has not been cycled in a while?

    • @funny1234589

      Change the filter and oil and take it for a long road trip. That usually sorts it out.

    If you have Auto Start/Stop on your car be careful. My starter failed at a busy junction a few years ago (car only had about 60,000mls and I had to call my Father to come and tow me off it. Nightmare! I switch it off now at any junctions.

      It’s not just a vanity cover. It can help prevent engine fires. If you get a fuel leak from the fuel rail area, the cover could stop the fuel from spraying onto the hot exhaust pipes. That’s what it’s there for.
