He scored 73 in a game with the best efficiency ever.
He has the record 30 and 35 points consecutive triple doubles
His stats have NEVER been done before.
The next best player in the team was injured for long time, the next 3 are: a rookie center, a veteran minimum and a come back from Europe. All of them also injured for a while.
If Jokic won it two years ago, I can’t imagine a reason for him not to win it this year
Jokic and Russ won games tho
What about his defensive stats? 😂 Lotta talk about just one side of the ball

The thing is, Jokic & Westbrook shouldn't have won those years. No way you should be given the MVP if your team doesn't even look like a title contender during the season.
@@SuperDunk1000shocker for you probably the mvp front runner is bad at defense
Luka is the most double teamed player in the NBA by far this season and he's 1st in scoring, 3rd in assists, top 20 in rebounds . . .BUT they cry, "he doesn't play defence", and YET he is 7th in steals!
Steals are not a great indicator of good defense lol
@@YayopilledIt's still better than nothing..
Luka’s stats are backed and are results of superclass performances. He is dominating against everybody.
The success of a team depends first and foremost on the coach. Kidd is not a good coach. That’s the problem with the Mavs.
MVP is an individual prize, it’s not given for the team performance. And by the way, very often it’s much more difficult to shine above everyone in a mediocre and broken team than being the star of the leading team. Jordan wasn’t worse player for years, his team was worse. After that the coach Phill Jackson came and we know what followed.
But MVP or not, Luka is the best player in the world. He is a genius and is unstoppable.
The jealous haters will try in any circumstances to put him down. If he wins a NBA championship and/or MVP they will start then to count their numbers and compare them with someone who has more.
But this is shallow and pity.
Who was the better player - the five-time-champion Steve Kerr or the zero-time-champion John Stockton? Of course the mighty John Stockton. And this comparison it’s not an exception at all.
The second best player in the world is Jokic. Incredible leader with superb basketball intelligence and a lot of great technical and psychical abilities.
Luka's not a great defender, but not a terrible one either. He usually plays average defense, so he's a nonfactor, but when you're as great as he is on offense, you should be in the MVP conversation.
The dude plays 40 minutes every game, jacks up 25+ shots and it doesn't translate to winning. That's why he's not MVP
JJ before the 50 game mark „Im not gonna talk MVP“
JJ after the 50 game mark „Im only gonna talk MVP“ lol
😂 As bad as it sounds, I’m not complaining tbh. Listening to JJ talk about the best of the best is very entertaining.
It the right time to talk about mvps, dont blame him.
Because the top 4 guys keep having absurd games. There's always something new in the MVP discussion
JJ transmiting from Miller's Planet, he all ready few weeks before us.
@@WindowLicker_-9wow the disrespect to Tatum…
People are finding every excuse not to put Luka in the discussion
I love Luka but it’s the seven seed that messes up his chances. I agree mvp should just be most valuable for their team, and Luka is the most valuable player for any team, but if they did it that way then Lebron would have 8 or 9 instead of 4 because when he went back to the Cavs he had better stats than every mvp but the Cavs were always 3rd or 4th seed and then sweep the playoffs
Are anybody talk about how many injuries the mavs have suffered? How many different start lineups Luka had to play with?
I mean no one does. His teammates have literally missed a combined 120 games. It was ridiculous
Luka carried them like a good mule when Lively, Kyrie, Exum and Kleber were injured at the same time
Idk about currently but 5 games after the all star break the Mavs were the only team to have no lineup with 100 minutes and the top 3 in minutes all had grant williams who got traded…
I hold Luka to a higher regard then 99 % yall. He is a Lebron type Wilt type caliber to me. he is having a failed season. He gotta win no more excuses

I can’t believe they didn’t talk about how injured the mavs were before the all star break. Luka carried them with g league players. Kyrie, exum, lively, maxi kleber have all missed atleast a month some two months. How is that not brought up??

Just watch the game that they played a couple of weeks ago. Just watch the game that they are going to play in a couple of weeks. Luka is a different beast.
The Mavericks are third in the league with the most injuries this season, three players didn't play between 22 and 25 games each, at one point even five of the most important teammates for the team were injured, but Luka still held the connection to the top 7 in the west, so if there were no injuries, they would now be among the top 2 or 3 in the west. If the Mavericks finish the season in the 5-6 position, Luka should become the MVP.
JJ said it best when he said “they are winning because of him.” Cut and dry without Luka the Mavs are the wizards
While I agree with this statement, I think this is even more true with Jokic. Just take a look at the on/off statistics.
Actually they are better than the wizards.
I believe when Luka doesn't play me kyrie does play they have a winning record.
Just for comparison the Nets without KD legitimately were a lottery team the past 2 seasons.
They had a .350 record or worse without KD and that was with Kyrie playing.
So I don't want to hear no MVP talks for Luka as a #8 seed
@@Christopher._MMavs are 3-5 without Luka this season bud
@@xxiv168 3-5 is a better winning percentage than the wizards hahaha. If you extend that they would win more games than the wizards.
And I didn't just say without Luka I meant to say without Luka when Kyrie plays but i made a writing mistake.
They are 3-2 without Luka and when Kyrie plays this season and they were also 6-2 last season if im not mistaken.
Because not having your two best players is a completely different situation. Basically every great team would be a lottery team without their two best players.
The nets were 5-10 without KD last year with Kyrie playing.
And they were something like 12-24 without KD and with Kyrie 2 seasons ago.
The suns were 7-13 last season without KD. Then he played and they didn't lose the last 7-10 regular season games
With KD the nets had the second best winning percentage in the east for the past 2 years. Possibly the #1 but I'm not sure if it was better than Boston.
My point is his team is much better than the wizards and he's not as good as KD, Giannis, Jokic, or embid.
Mainly because of his defense.
That's literally why his team is always struggling to make the playoffs. He doesn't impact defense.
some might say if luka didnt have the ball 99% of the time they might find ways to win more with gettign more out of his teammates
One point people miss on Luka's season is his both 3 pt percentage and ft percentage increased significantly and with his volume of shooting and his passing ability, he could be the most gravitional impact in the game right now. He pushes his defense got a lot better so people started to talk about that finally but this is people usually miss.

I hate the MVP discourse and how the criteria isn’t consistent. Is it the player with the best team and best collective of talent or the player that’s the most important and invaluable to his team?
Depends on voters and their biases and whims. Stephen A. Smith was all in on Embiid last year....but this year it's Tatum because he's "the best player on the best team"....by that logic he should have been championing Giannis last year. I understand Nekias’s review of the on/off splits before and after the trades. I would also like him to consider that Luka was playing 40-45 minutes for a large stretch of 2 months due to injuries, and there’s very little off time there. Also consider that he was playing with mixed lineups of G League players (and Dwight Powell starting center lol) during that same stretch. I don’t watch the games of other MVP candidates as much, but from the games I do watch, guys like Jokic and SGA have specific sub patterns and lineups that they operate in every game no matter what. Luka’s time on the floor is more sporadic and lineups are more diverse.
The lineups and his minutes have been less sporadic as late (and his on/off numbers have been much better).

Its high time NBA should make some broad guidelines for selection of MVP. Min games played, team ranking, peer ranking, voters ranking, public ranking and basic stats reqd.
there is a more simplistic look at this.Sorry Shai is not legitimately in this conversation and it really amazes me because OKC record. Luka smoked SGA and the OKG and other than steals LUKA is leaps ahead of all other players. Here’s the deal if a team makes it in playoffs by margins of 5 games or less then the record no longer should be a factor. There are how many games in the season to have a plus or minus of 5 games. In addition who is more exciting to see ? Who is more creative on the floor? Luka stats show he should have 18 assist a game and if his teammates made there shots Dallas is winning far more games. MVP to the player who has made the most impact for the year. So 73pts in a game and how many 1st this year, leading scorer, top 3s assist number 2 in 3s made, .This is an easy decision MVP Doncic. Besides Giannis has 2 JOKIC has his already and every year LUKA is overlooked. SGA does well this year and everybody is screaming SGA ?
So you’re basically saying jokic and Giannis shouldn’t win because they already did? lol that same logic screwed jokic last year and Lebron multiple years. So Luka should win mvp because of voter fatigue? Luka puts those numbers up because look how often he has the ball and how long he has the ball compared to shai. Luka is great but you’re discrediting other players great season just to make Luka look better. American media is racist. They are Luke warm about giving Jokic his props. But they surely don’t want to give anything to another White European. Luka kept his team above .500 when 4 of his starters were out with injuries. Kyrie was out 22 games. Lively was out 17 games. Exum was out 23 games. That should be the definition of an MVP. Is MVP about who’s on the best team? Blame Kidd for benching his best big, forcing the team to lose 5 games. If anything, Luka’s coach sabotaged his MVP chances. Luka is the best 1 on 1 player and one of the best passers but the way he scores mostly is just one v one and teammates looking, thats not good for chemestry, for flow of the game and for nothing, basketball is 5v5, he can do better, but he needs a team that fits him as jokic has
Luka should be MVP this year. His production is greater than of Jokic, and he is a better player, he's the best player in the game. It would be an injustice to give it to Jokic again. If you add up total production from both players Luka has him beat, and if you consider where Dallas came from last year, not making the playoffs, to being a top contender this year that should count for something. That shows how valuable Luka is because he leads the team in every category, he makes other players better, and his production is the highest among any player in the league. Please, give Luka a fair shake and let him have the MVP
He might be most dominant in that position. Forget mvp😅....output and consistency is out of this world 🌎 👏
I noticed how many dumb people in this comment section are. They are literally comparing it to Jokic first MVP season and russ overrated season. They should not have won both those awards. So those two cannot be used as a parameter to justify why Luka should win the MVP. If you are so great then why could you not drag your team to a top 3 seed? And stop with the excuses with injuries because it is part of the game. Availability is the best ability. Prime example is Lebron with his early cavs years where he was surrounded by teammates worse than Luka have right now but they were at minimum a 3 seed during his time. All you want to look at is his stats but do not observe how he is playing, that heliocentric style of play is supposed to make the guy pop out insane stats but is not conducive in winning particularly in the playoffs that is well documented already.
So those seasons were overrated because you said so? Shut up..please
You know the league is talented when a guy like Luka, having the crazy season that he’s having, isn’t top 3 in the MVP conversation
8 games separating 1st seed and 8th seed
The stats astronomically favors Luka’s historic season. He is MVP! Most Valuable Player. We are splitting hairs, Luka is on a winning team with the 3rd most injured lineup in the league.
MVP
34 9 9 1.5 at insane true shooting percanteges with a 73 point game.
I’ve been having these debates all month long. Luka deserves MVP if Mavericks can at least make the 4th seed. Otherwise it’s not possible. And if anyone is going to mention Westbrook and Jokic; there were multiple factors that played into them winning MVP at 6th seed.
Even if he does make the 4th seed I wouldn’t say he’s the clear MVP. No matter who wins at the end of the season, we’re gonna finish with 3 runners-up who were deserving of the award.
What multiple factors? Westbrook only won that MVP because he had 1 more rebound than Harden.
And Jokic won his MVP because the voters didn't wanna give Giannis his third MVP😂
@@Tomtainius I also wouldn’t say he’s the clear MVP at 4th seed but he’d at least have a chance. Getting tired of having to tell fans why he doesn’t deserve it as a 7th seed. I’ve seen people say he won’t win mvp with Mavericks as a 7th seed because he’s white. It’s getting ridiculous.
@@Sebaanation Westbrook won the MVP because he was the second player ever to average a triple double and was the first and (so far) only guard to average triple double and carried OKC to the playoffs without KD. Jokic won MVP because he carried a g-league tier Nuggets roster to the playoffs without Jamal and (I think) MPJ. Also forgot to mention they both accomplished these feats in a stacked western conference which supported the narrative needed to win the award. Narrative’s have usually always played a part in a player winning MVP.
Yeah u are right it would be ugly if they give the mvp to luka and i love hin
Luka will win it multiple times in the future. This season the team record isn't good enough. But Luka is getting better with every season he is playing. Look at his 3 point %. Look at how hard he worked in the offseason. It is a pretty safe bet to take.
Luka is the most valuable player for his team. MVP hasn't been about that, but it should be.
Absolutely amazing that you can talk for 16 minutes without saying anything substantial. You didnt even mention Mavericks injuries and the different lineups he has had to play with this season.
Luka is Iverson. Incredible talent and the team isn't going to win squat in long run
How you know? Took dirk like 13 years to get one
@richierich4330 How I know?. Cause I've been watching ball since 92. Shhhhh
Lmao he just turned 25
I guarante he will win chips and mvps
@@leod8489 but you don't know. You assuming. Like I said nobody thought Dirk would win cause he was "too soft". Took him awhile but he finally did. Luka not even in his prime yet
@@leod8489you’ve been watching the wrong ball then buddy
Its joker. I’m a lifelong thunder fan and think Shai’s time is coming but it’s jokic
shai lost to pistons. not mvp
I love Luka but Jokic is just the best player in the NBA. It’s nothing to be ashamed about Luka is having an MVP year for sure. It’s just Jokic is having a better year.
MVP is subjective. Based on factual #s, Luka is the best offensive weapon in the world. On defense, top 10 steals and top 20 rebounding
Luka
If Luka isn’t #1 in the MVP race then you have to rename the award. The award isn’t for the best player on the best team ..
The thing is anything you try to throw on those guys specially the internationals ones might not be so effective..They been playing against a lot of defensive schematics since they were at least 15… from individuals, double coverages, blitz, and any type of zone, they will figure it out sooner than later. Then you have a guy like Jokic who can anticipate any call or any play?
It would be really interesting to see from a stats perspective that after a team misses and then chooses to go into a new action next time down the court, how often to they score immediately off the new look? If it is a high percentage, maybe it is worth having a new action every. single. time. down the court. This way the defense has no chance to guard against your time tested plays, because you might score off of it and then never run it again for another 50 possessions. They'll never see anything coming.
Giannis DOES NOT get enough love. All the jokic fan boys. Love how defense doesn’t matter anymore SMH.
man i am jokic fan. but it is weird that seems like people could only talk 3 candidate at a time. sga and luka came into the conversation and people suddenly forgot about giannis.
If team wins are going to factor into your MVP discussion, then you HAVE to take who the coach is and how many injuries the TEAM has had, and the TEAM composition around the player you are considering for an INDIVIDUAL award.
The voters aren't watching the Mavs games or else they would think Luka is MVP
He is the Most Valuable Player for their team
- Most double-teamed player of all time in a season
- He scored 73 in a game with the best efficiency ever
- He has basically averaged a 35 point triple double this season - 35,10,9 -
- He has been playing most of the season without Kyrie and other key starters. Has been literally putting the team on his back all season and it's amazing they won as many games as they have
- Literally all of his statistical averages are at a career high ( and they are insane to look at )
- 1st, in scoring, 3rd in assist, 18th in rebounds, 7th in steals, 2nd in 3's made
The Mavs a real shot at finishing 6th in the west, possibly 5th.
The MVP belongs in the same category that figure skating, where judges decide how well you are doing. And it's even worse because it's an individual award for a team sport. And even worse because it focuses on the regular season that in the NBA might as well be a different sport than the playoffs.
Literally. They got the last 5 MVPs wrong
Luka was literally getting triple teamed against Chicago
Jokic is the only MVP candidate. No other answer is valid. He should be going for his 4th straight MVP. The Embiid sympathy vote robbed Jokic!
One of Jokic’s should’ve gone to Embiid so it balances out
@@JSSRTU27you dumb asf if you honestly believe that
This is an absurd take. Jokic is having a great season, but Giannis, SGA and Luka are having MVP worthy seasons also.
Bias, if you dont think shai is a mvp candidate taking that young core to the 1st or 2nd seed I dont know what your standards are. Jokic has already a championship team that perfectly fits him, okc is just getting started now. Shai clearly the most valuable player for a team rn. Nuggets would win games without jokic
Luka just as good.
Can people stop saying he’s not paying defense? He’s been putting in an effort and isn’t bare minimum on defense. I personally would like MVP to be viewed in the light of who really is Most Valuable as a player to their team, while also personally performing at a higher level across the player pool. Team record being a factor always has seemed odd to me since it’s an individual award.
Stats are empty if they dont translate to wins
Luka is statistically the most valuable and impactful player in the league this season.
Whether or not he’s given an award for it based on the votes of a panel of broadcasters and sportswriters is not going to change that fact.
I mean jokic is the best player this year 🤷🏾♂️
Please go back to working with RJ or Legs...
Yeah these guys suck
Totally disagree. They bring perspectives that you would usually not get from ESPN "analysts".
No MVP candidate gets unjustly picked apart more than Luka....it's absurd
everyone saying all this abt stats, if you just watched this season he just the nicest rn ngl
In order.....
1. Jokic
2. SGA
3. Luka
4. Giannis
5. Tatum
In no world should SGA be over Luka.
@@CarbonSound4facts, and Tatum need to be out of that list
Sga over luka? Lmao
@@CarbonSound4Unless that world involves measuring PER and estimated +/- where Shai comfortably clears.
@@CarbonSound4 Yes. Shai is an elite scorer AND defender
Jokic is way better than Luka and it's not even close. Jokic actually plays to win and is not afraid to sacrifice his points to win
Lol what a delusional comment , play to win now but not back then .. nuggets fan got short memory 😂😂😂, they didn’t know how long they been stuck with the same cores and coaches for years of failure and one success wherelse luka been having a 3 diff team in 5-6 years and still only 25 years old..😂😂 doubting a young lad just to make their own star looks better is funny .
It is extremely close lol
You sir, are nuts! lol
@@jackchan6624 Luka didn't even make the playoffs last year... and he might not make it this year again..
i think you should give mavs still a chance. They got not that long ago compleat team. Something is to have a good game and something else is to figure out how to play constantly on the same level
He needs to win a championship and next season he is MVP and wins another finals
He is a monster and will take over NBA in few years
I love Luka...but man he is a hog. The ball gotta be out of his hands
Jokic won it as a 6th seed a couple years ago with worse stats than Luka
An MVP should be based on who is the best player in the league and it should go beyond just how much their team in winning. Winning should be one factor, but it should be who is having the most awe-inspiring and dominating play. Some teams would be good without their main guy -- and we have advanced statistics now where we can measure I guy's impact on winning. There should be a formula that can be created that says that of the amount of teams an MVP candidates team has won, what is the impact on winning that they've had where it can be compared across candidates. And in Luka's case, as long as his team is going to make the playoffs, people in a similar position should have just as much of a chance to win if it can be shown that they have an equivalent or better impact on winning for their team. The criteria for winning should be that the team makes the playoffs -- it shouldn't be able the best player on the best team or top few teams. That way a guy who is having a historical season has the chance to get it -- similar to when Russel Westbrook won it.
You are wrong!! Look how many injuries we've had all season. We are now the 6th seed and 1.5 from the 4th seed. Come on, MAN!! He has even gotten better on defense, too.
I think if you put Luka on those teams aside from Denver they become a better team
The MVP award is about contribution to the team, not about how high you can put your team in the rankings because it's not only up to you as an individual. For me, the fact that the Mavs are 8th right now is mostly Luka. You take him out they are maybe 13th in the west, you take out any other 2 players from the team they are still at least 10th. If a player has good enough stats and efficiency and can put his team in play to win the NBA title which for me is at least 8th seed (the old system) that means his excellence brought his team into contention for winning it all and he deserves to be seriously considered for the MVP award and by this logic, this years MVP is Luka, maybe Jokic.
Now i do agree that if a team is 13th for ex, that player will have better stats just for the fact that his teammates are so bad because it's all on him and he didn't actually achieve anything since his team didn't make the playoffs so his stats are at the end of the day "useless" for the lack of a better word.
In the case of Luka and the Mavs you have to consider the fact that Kyrie is not the best fit for Luka, i think Dallas would be better of with another all star, maybe someone who is not a PG and plays more, i also think we can agree that J. Kidd is not the best coach out there to say the least, so the Mavericks being an 8th seed, possibly even 5th considering everything is a miracle by itself, a miracle called Luka Doncic.
The same with Jordan in the 80s. No matter how good his stats were, if his team doesn't get into the 5 best teams in the season. I don't think he should be in the discussion, no matter how crazy the numbers are. This is a team sport...i would love NBA give him more credit and love, but it is what it is. Time will put him in the right place. Until that happens...enjoy him! He is a freak!
Jordan literally won an MVP in the 80’s homie..with a 47-35 record.
If there is one game separating the 5th and the 8th and the Mavs are the 8th then you dont give It to him? That is not serious.
Jordan didn’t have nearly the same competition. He could score and that’s it
It's called Most Valuable Player!! Stop moving the goal post.
Luka is the best player in the league and is the most important player to his team's success. He deserves MVP.
2:30 ur not wrong. And i dont think Luka should win it as an 8th seed for sure! But there is definitley a difference in what Luka’s doing on an (individual) level this season and every other candidate (not counting embiid cause he’s ineligible but he was obv having the best szn prior)
Luka’s having quite literally a top 5 offensive season of all time so thats why i think ppl r weighing his run differently than sgas, giannis’s and jokic
(i think all 3 of them are more deserving atm tho cause again they have a better mix of winning AND stats)
but if Luka were to move up high enough like 4-5 then i think he has a good chance at winning it (assuming neither nuggets bor okc are 1 seed)
I feel like everyone takes Jokic for granted. I do think Luka has passed SGA for 2nd. Joker is minus 3 to 1 for a reason
2K stats right there and we're talking about him possibly taking MVP instead of him unanimously being the favorite xd
Tatum’s efficiency and production drops in the playoffs, every year. Plus that Celtics team is stacked like no other, probs only the Nuggets have a similar stack. But you can’t give it to Jokic again, the same way you didn’t give it to Lebron, Durant, Curry during their winning stretches.
You absolutely can give it to jokic. Jokic or Luka no one else is as good
We HAVE an award for best player on a high performing team if team placement factors we don't need anything more than finals mvp. Most valuable player is what a player adds to the team with their presence, play each of the mvp canadates teams against eachother without the superstars mavs can't contend without luca that's what makes luca the most valuable player
