AirVenture 2021 Opener Flies the BlackFly and They're Ready to Sell You One

  • Three years ago a company called Opener showed up at AirVenture with one of the weirdest flying machines ever, an E-VTOL called the BlackFly. This year at Oshkosh, they demonstrated it twice and and the machine is in full production. They'll sell you one so you can fly it for yourself. No word on price, though.

Having done accident investigations for the Navy myself, and spending the rest of my career in aircraft survivability in general, I can only cringe when I hear that the safety review board is made up of the company's own senior managers, all of whom have an equity-driven conflict of interest inherent in their positions, plus an astronaut with no engineering/safety background (he's a retired physicist) and a high-roller computer guy from Google (also with no aerospace engineering/safety background other than having jumped out of a balloon at extremely high altitude), "for knowledge." I wouldn't want to be holding Opener stock the first time some buyer crashes one and the lawyers start digging into corporate decision-making.

As far as I'm concerned, proper safety review can only be performed by an external third party with no conflicts of interest.

      What Is Islam?
Islam is not just another religion.
It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.
It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine.
The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as:
{ “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)
Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus.
Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him

All the prototypes over the years never went to production so the development was never moved forward. I think for testing how something like this does in the market, we can build a solid foundation for future development and regulations when the FAA has proven data to go by. The whole reason why Pilots aren't replaced by autopilots yet is because of the immediate decisions that we can make. Do I think untrained people could make the same decision as a trained pilot? Batteries in flying are a dead end, save for some very niche applications. Every energy storage in a vehicle basically makes use of a redox reaction. A battery has to carry the weight of the oxydizer along with the weight of the fuel. A conventional combustion engine takes the oxydizer from the air when it needs it and can even dump the combustion products overboard.
In an industry where cost of operations is so directly linked to weight this is a non-starter.

The Tesla Roadster was a conventional design. Nobody laughed at it either for it’s design concept other than the fact it was electric powered.
This thing on the other hand is not only electric powered but a very unorthodox design (for an aircraft).
The potential flaws are obvious when it comes to power failure in flight. I assume the safety parachute would be mandatory as this thing desn’t look to have any gliding ratio at all. The almost 90° landing position blocks the front pilot’s view which is something that needs to be looked at as well.

I've been a top critic of this thing for years. I love innovation, totally high 5 Opener for that. But honestly, what is the target market? What is the intended application?
Commuters are now (post covid era) working from home, as they should be. Also, 25 miles is weak. It's over weight for Part 103. And bottom line really is resoundingly THIS: it's NOT possible to commute anywhere Part 103 would allow you to fly. I'm SERIOUSLY not understanding the lofty claims this company is making, or who the heck they think the customer is, besides a wealthy person that wants to buy a cutting edge toy for cutting edge sake (which I fully admit has merit, but is not a huge market). Opener, if you see this, I welcome an honest response to this assessment.

So I'm the customer. I don't want to commute to work or any nonsense like that. I don't need a range higher than 25 miles. I'm perfectly comfortable with the same batteries in my phone, computer and drones. I just want to take to the park or the beach and fly like a bird for a few minutes, maybe an hour or two. Just like hang gliders or ultralights. AND that is EXACTLY who this is aimed at. And depending on what they want for it, I'm ALL IN!

There are still drones (that aren't just toys) that do NOT require registration and/or training/licensing. It's a drone category that involves limits on size, weight, max altitude...similar to more powerful drones as Ultralights are to regular aircraft. Of course, it does depend a great deal on where you live and/or operate the aircraft. For example, where I live I can buy a "no registration/licensing" drone as long as it's for non-commercial use, and that's under 250 grams, has a flight time of about 30 minutes, has a 3-axis gimbal camera, and an altitude of 3000 meters with full GPS control features.

When a conventional engine fails, there is rarely a backup to pick up the slack. With this, there's multiple redundancy, and electric motors are naturally far more reliable than ICE due to fewer moving parts, and less mechanical complexity.
