    I was born in 1978. When I was a kid in the 80s and then a teen in the 90s, everyone was always talking about flying cars and how surely in the year 2000 everyone would have them. It always kind of was treated as this holy grail and main benchmark of futurism. Flying cars and fusion power, which is always 30 to 50 years away, according to the experts and has been so my whole life.
    What I find the most fascinating about the current advancements in flying technology is that they didn't come from any of those rich weirdos who were trying to build a flying car for the last 50 years, nor from the aircraft or the helicopter or the car industry, but that it all came from remote controlled toys that just got scaled up and more and more advanced.
    It really came out of the left field.
    It is like back when mobile phones first got popular and suddenly the world of photography and cameras got totally shaken up and turned on its head not by companies that had been building cameras since generations, but by new mobile phone companies that originally had nothing to do with cameras and photography.
    Suddenly Nokia and later Apple were the world's biggest seller of cameras, not Kodak or Nikon.
    It was the same when cars were invented. Back then there were big, successful manufacturers of horse drawn wagons and not one of them got in on the building cars business, as you could have expected. Instead the cars all were built by totally new companies that hadn't existed before.
    Seems as if those big, emerging, world changing trends in technology always come out of the left field.

      Big companies simply can't react or move as quickly as a start up. A lot of companies put a great deal of money into their innovation and design apartments, so they can keep up with the changing world. For example, big bottle producing companies and breweries don't really know how to compete with microbreweries.

      Change the year from 1978 to 1949 and your first paragraph pretty much describes me. At age 72, I have been waiting for flying cars all my life. It does seem like the technology is finally starting to get there, and maybe I'll see it become reality in my lifetime, but it won't be me driving (flying) one of them to work. Too late for that! You make a great point about the genesis of new technologies NOT coming from existing big companies already in the business, but let's not forget Studebaker. They were making wagons since the 1800s and were a major force in automobiles until the middle of the 20th century. I guess the lesson there is that even if Toyota or GM doesn't invent the successful commercial flying car, they might very well become competitors in the market for them.

    They all are interesting and I'd love to see further development of them. The Blackfly and Jetson One are the two I would feel safe enough to try. Thank you for the upload and welcome back

      I like the Zeva. But I think it would be safer if the pilot sat upright in the exact middle under a Plexiglass bubble and the craft sat flat on the ground on legs. Also, it should use ducted thrust coming from cleverly disguised vents to look more like a UFO.

    I really like how very 'Miyazaki' the Opensky looks. Quite beautiful, and clearly a labour of love, as well as engineering skill.

      The inventor said it's based on the "Mehve" glider from Nausicaa so yeah it is and I LOVE IT.

    I only clicked onto this for the Zeva. I've been interested in the "flying flapjack" experimental aircraft since I was a boy over 40 years ago. I'm so stoked that someone has potentially found a way to commercialize this design!

    There's more to understand about the Opensky M-02J than its technology.
    It is the fact that the creators of the M-02J actually created and flew a new concept of aircraft, winning the bureaucratic paperwork and airworthiness certification process in modern Japan, where it is the most difficult country in the world to build and own a flying machine since WW2.
    The makers of the Opensky M-02J should be applauded for winning permission to fly from the world's worst bureaucracy, the Japanese bureaucracy.

      It is also almost an exact copy of Mowe, a personal flying machine used in the feature length anime 'Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind' by the titular character. It is one of Hayao Miyazaki's earliest films. I saw it on display at the Worldcon in Japan in 2007, though at that timne they hadn't yet yet added the jet engine and were flying it as a glider.

    The 'Opensky' personal jet looks like it was inspired by 'Nausica'!
    Which is a good thing.
    Q: what do you do with engine failure if your aircraft has no wings?
    A: Fall to the ground like a stone unless you have a parachute.
    The 'Zev' and 'Blackfly' are the only two with a slim chance at gliding under zero-power conditions.

      Right there with you. The functional human life span is a ripoff. Mentally and physically.
      If we can get past this deadly vax time bomb administration, and border restrictions, we can go to Panama and get stem cell IV infusions that will restore function to our organs, giving us the healthy state of a youthful body.
      That and other reverse aging science is here. So it's now just a matter of money and politics.
      Money to afford it.
      Politics to avoid the early death the gov would prefer you have, in order to avoid paying for your existence.
      Social security and other social welfare of the people systems are going to fail cuz they rely on a strong work force of the population to remain perpetual.
      A strong workforce is impossible when the work is all taken to 3rd world countries. No one paying in means no money to pay out. Therefore it's just a matter of good business to put the old unproductive workers down. No reason to keep them on if they aren't actively contributing anymore.
      Like livestock. The biggest contribution to society we can make now is as fertilizer for Bill Gates vast agriculture land properties.
      And that is exactly what is going down right now. A virus that targets the old and sick. A vax that targets a controlled percentage of the population at a time.
      It's like a lottery system. But it's not fair unless everyone plays it. Thus, mandates.
      The reported 40% jump in deaths of 18 to 64 year old people by the insurance companies is no conspiracy theory.
      And it happened after the vax, not after the covid.
      A 10% jump is a once every 200 year probability. In the case of natural disaster. Such as a tsunami or hurricane, etc.
      Over population isn't about resource availability. It's about financial stability and control.
      Reset means start over. The super wealthy already have access to the regenerative science and tech.
      All they need now is a generation of people to be raised without any concept of personal freedom or employee rights.
      They are currently paying healthy individuals for their sperm and eggs. $10,000 for eggs, $12,000 a year for sperm.
      Google it. See for yourself. You must meet genetic physical specifications in order to qualify.
      It sounds like a sci-fi nightmare.
      That's because it is.

    Interesting designs!!! I prefer to focus on the conventional homebuilt aircraft designs with a conventional set of wings , fuselage & an empenage... The conventional aircraft will have the capability to glide.

      I think its that way with a lot of things. I mean building most common planes and jets is cheap enough to make money off, but not too cheap. And safe enough, like why most houses or cars look kind of similar. Just safe enough, and made so the business makes money.
      The fancy bubble houses and curvy cars of the 1950's concept art is just too expensive to shape and put together the house or car. Plus its not even useful. I dont think the shape of cars or buildings is going to change drastically in the future.

    1:15 Wow, the Omni Hoverboard looks so dangerous. One wrong move that takes you over a critical angle and you'll make an irrecoverable dive. If the platform would be below the propellers it would be naturally stable.

      Patrick, I agree with you on the load being under the slicing devices. Also, with the props above the pilot you could have a quick release of some sort. The in an emergency you could release the device and deploy a parachute, provided you have enough altitude. It just seems like common sense with the propulsion above the pilot/load, you would naturally have a lot more stability. With the computer controller maintaining additional stability it seems like it would be much safer than trying to fight off 8 or 16 propellers after the pilot leans too far in the wrong direction.

      Nope, that makes it unstable. Pendulums work the way you imagine when you have a stable anchor point, but in flight everything is moving, so having the weight lower down actually destabilizes that system.

    IMO Blackfly is the most commercially ready personal aircraft. If I could afford it, I would buy one tomorrow

      It's o.k. but I still think the 25 mile range (with 20 % reserve) in the US sucks and makes it not worth the purchase. That's 12.5 miles effective range (8 kWh battery) until you have to turn around and go home. It can charge 80 percent full in 25 minutes but you would have to be able to charge it on the go if you need to go farther then 25 miles. That takes planning your day carefully. At a speed of 60 mph your flying time in between charges is 25 minutes. Not a lot of time. I'd like to see it doubled at least. 200 lbs weight limit.. I wonder how heavy a spare battery would be to carry. Also, I hate the squarish design. It's 13.5 feet long by 13.7 feet wide and you need 36 inches takeoff and landing. It's only a one person craft, I'd want to slim it down a bit. I could live with 6 feet by 4 feet but I'd make it even smaller. I like small cars. My motorcycle is a 150cc scooter and my car is a Mercedes Benz Smart Car, one of the smallest cars legally sold in the US.

    I think many companies will choose these as a quick alternative to helicopters in a variety of situations. Light, easy to transport, store & maintain, requires minimal regulations, skills & certifications, minimal fuel costs, low insurance costs, and at one 300th the overall cost of a copter.

      But without the inherent safety of a helicopter. Autorotation is important.
      They're also waaaaaaay less efficient than a coaxial helicopter design.

    Fantastic. The Omni Hoverboard and Jetson/Mark 4 seem to have the most potential.
    What would also be cool is a setup like Hawkman has: flapping wings, maybe attached to a vest worn by the flyer. For a human adult a wingspan of about 22 feet would needed.
    With today's advances in materials technology, including strong lightweight composites and ceramics, this line of development could be productive.

    I am a pilot, and I have to tell you the idea of unlicensed individuals taking to the skies like this frightens me. We have an a problem with drunk drivers on the ground. I just can't even begin to start to imagine the carnage that's going to happen over a period of time in the industry of all these types taken collectively, it's not a good idea I think it's a bad idea but progress will occur. I personally hope none of them do anything stupid but of course as a fools wish because a lot of fools will do something. And I'll be doing it while are flying and if they killed them selves at all lockdown but they hurt someone else well that's where you start getting heavy handed legislation. And that's going to come.

      O você diz é de se conjecturar, e me trouxe a memória a matéria sobre um caminhão da volvo, que só acionava o motor após o motorista fazer o uso do bafômetro incorporado ao mesmo, e o teste feito, foi com um bombom recheado com de licor de cereja. Acredito que para usar este tipo de veículo deveriam ser agregados vários tipos de sistemas de segurança semelhantes, leitura de íris entre outros.

      Or, B. The chute is for the entire craft.
      These chutes are available for many common private aircraft. You can get them for Cesnas, etc.

      There is a charge (gas or otherwise) that deploys it. Takes very little time to deploy.
      It would increase survivability...
      ...or ,at least, allow for enough of you to survive to facilitate identification.

    As long as these contraptions are using blowing air for suspension they are doomed to be expensive toys. Any practical "blowing air" application will be more like a conventional helicopter than these toys until a major breakthrough in energy storage is achieved.

    I live 11 miles from my job at Edwards Air force Base. I have a backyard measuring about 3/4 of an acre of lunar terrain, easy to launch and land from. An interesting notion indeed!

      Have you yet investigated what Edwards AFB will permit for air travel as you are describing?
      I'm confident they have some folks that are quite proficient with their powder actuated pop-guns.
      If such a commute is acceptable, I suggest looking in to Para-motors.

    They remind me of early flight contraptions of the 1900's. Back then people thought they were going to revolutionize flight with their ideas. Then things got realistic and only planes and helicopters were created.
    So what will come of these so called modern contraptions? Obviously something will happen.

    As a commercially-rated rotary wing and fixed wing pilot, I wouldn't strap on or step into any of the contraptions shown in this video. Leave them to daredevils with fully vested life insurance and top-notch catastrophic health insurance.

    Gotta love these body slicers in the hands of the naive, but confident. As for jet-packs, except fringe use cases, ridiculous contraptions. Hovering is the most inefficient form of flying.

      Maybe, Using a high RPM generator/turbine with aluminum coil might work. High RPM generators need less copper/aluminum, Turbines are already light. Someone needs to try it. Also there is augmentation where electric motors are used for takeoff and gas used for cruise.

    I´m amused that the intrinsic technology of drone (UAV and now piloted) vehicles in general, was and is the rate gyroscope, which was developed _not_ from fancy NASA funded technology, but from the nascent model helicopter industry.
    Before miniaturized ring laser (and fiber optic cable) gyros were used, there were subminiature “tuning fork“ technology gyros, and before those were electromechanical gyros designed and built to be as _inexpensive_ as possible, because no modeler would desire to spend more than, say, $100 in modern value, to include one.
    By the way, a tenet of modern commercial aviation is that eventually _every_ component of _every_ system of _every_ aircraft _always_ fails, which is why commercial planes have so much redundancy, (simulated) training is extensive, and flight protocol is so strict and conservative. For the military, in the example of the 80s technology of the F-16, each aircraft implements redundancy via _four_ independently “voting“ digital artificial stability control computers, each implementing a gyro, because it was quickly realized that no pilot had reflexes fast enough or had skill enough to keep it flying should this artificial stability fail.
    And fail it has; however, (F-16) military pilots have the option to eject from an aircraft that is (necessarily) going to crash. In light of the above, what option(s) will a civilian pilot have in these VSTOL microlights, when the inevitable occurs?
    Incidentally, if you are thinking, _just use an auto-deployed parachute system,_ for military jet aviation generally implementing ejection seats (with a parachute of course), these fail too, as well as being quite problematic itself. Statistics indicate that _50%_ of all low-level ejections are lethal.

    I'm fairly positive we'll never see ANY of these commercially. Where they are cool to watch from the ground, would you want to be strapped to one of these things going 150 knots at 600 feet and the motors stopped working? If modern aircraft has told us anything, failures happen, no matter how redundant you think your system is. Fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft are able to be landed with relative safety in case of an engine failure. None of these contraptions have that capability and will NEVER be approved by the FAA.

    Some of these look pretty viable for eventual expansion into passenger use! I think the battery technology will come up to speed in the next couple of decades, with the electric vehicle switch coming along. Imagine a seven passenger half ton cargo capacity with automated flight systems and a 4 hour battery charge with flash charging capabilities. You listening to me, Elon? Musk! Wake up! I'm talking at you!

      When the horseless carriage was being developed and the start of automobiles was coming to fruition...everything was dangerous. They also thought if humans went over fifty mph their bodies would not function properly and their skin would be pulled off of their faces...even though they had experienced wind storm that were more than 50 mph.
      The unknown is always scary and dangerous...but look at us now.
      We could be even further along with development and safety aspect if governments around the world were for the people instead of for themselves and big business.
      As far as your certain tasks comment...there will be specialized versions as with anything...but this will catch on as soon as these few innovators and courageous people do the hard and dangerous stuff and then open the door for us average people to make them ourselves or buy them at a better price point.
      So yes they are extremely dangerous...to weak minded people with no drive and common sense.
      The bicycle, the skateboard, the motorcycle, the automobile, the plane...all dangerous if used in a dangerous way. And you have probably been on, in or operated any of those yourself. But you wouldn't have the option if these truly courageous people clearing the path for you were weak and scared. And for every idiot operating one and getting hurt or killed...there are thousands of people that operate them and are just fine.
      So, please learn to think strong and positive instead of weak and scared.
      The world will be a better place.
      Take care and be safe out there. The world is a lot scarier than you think...but not because of the things in this video.

    Very nice. I think the most promising eVTOL aircraft on the horizon is the Lilium Jet. I think it has the most compelling design, and has many advantages over the BackFly and Jetson One.

      It has multiple redundant thrusters and wings that transition from VTOL to very efficient forward flight while maintaining nice pilot/passenger orientation. You'll find they are deep into testing the aircraft and have larger passenger versions planned as well.
