A nice little trick! Have you tried Sherwin's Pro Classic latex enamel?

I never knew you could mix that. Guess since they are both acrylic, it makes sense.

    Hi Paul.
    First off, Happy New Year!
Ok, so it sounds like a one-to-one mix will work. For example, a quart of high gloss latex to a quart of clear poly. Yes? Thanks. Be well. -Nick

      Hi Nick,
You are correct, this will also greatly reduce the brush strokes. If you are painting flat surfaces such as cabinets, you can brush the detail and use a small roller for the flat parts. This will give a better look.
      Thanks!
      Paul

no shit? will have to try this. Oil based high gloss can be a bear to work with. This water based combo looks like a good alternative. Does the mixture separate? Affect drying time?

great hack thank you if you find a good way of going from oil based to a water base without needing to strip the oil paint off first that would be great as the water base has crap coverage over oil

    • @paulstoolbox
      @paulstoolbox  Před 7 lety +10

      Hi James,
I go over oil paint with latex quite often. I use a few different methods and they all work for me. You do not have to strip the paint or heavily sand it. You only have to scuff the surface. I use a sponge sanding block, steel wool or even 220 or 400 sand paper. I also use automotive primer in a can, it bonds very well and it allows you to get into tight grooves without damaging the detail of intricate molding. They also have new latex paints that will stick to oil base paints without any prep. Zinser II is a water base primer that will stick to oil and adheres very well. I hope this helps and Have a Happy New Year!
      Thanks!
      Paul

I've been using Pro Classic Acrylic enamel semi-gloss from Sherwin Williams with Floetrol added. So far, everything is nice an shiny. I would have gone with oil based paint, but the previous owners really suck at painting and globbed on latex paint on the trim really heavy. They didn't even have the common courtesy of filling in rail holes.
How does this 50/50 mix compare to Pro Classic acrylic semi-gloss?
I'd try the 50/50 mix, but I'm more than half way done painting the entire house.

      Hi April,
I really like Purdy brushes myself and I have used them for years. I would also recommend Wooster brushes because they hold more paint than the average brush.
      Happy New Year!
