    A conflicted masterpiece. This debut collection of amazing EDM tracks features some phenomenal moments that are timeless and full of magic. It also delivers mediocre EDM tracks with strange features as it sets out to do the exact opposite hoping to dismantle the formula of EDM. It ends up in an uncomfortable mid-point.

      Goodbye to a World reminds me of my aunt and my grandma.
      My grandma died in hospital while I was at work, on my lunch break, the one day I had left my phone at home, so instead of getting to say my goodbyes in person I just got to hear the doctor talk through the process of turning off her life support over my boss' cellphone.
      My aunt comes in to this by the fact that she still, 5 years later, has a voicemail from grandma on her phone from 2 weeks before she died, where all she does is irritability tell my aunt to call her back so they could work out details for Thanksgiving.
      The movie Coco made me a sobbing mess, especially at the end, as I thought about my grandma, and I actually got a copy of my grandma's last voicemail just to hear her voice again (which also reminded me of the Cyanide & Happiness comic with the mom calling her son's number over and over while crying over a newspaper with his obituary).
      Goodbye to a World is like someone took all those various thoughts and tidbits from my mind and made a song, where the tape has been played and rewound so much that it's starting to fray, the player is running out of power, and that last connection to someone I'll never see again is becoming nothing more than a glitchy, decayed memory.
      And that just took me fifteen minutes to type out, I was sobbing so much. But that's good. It's always better to cry than to not feel at all.

      I didn’t really know that song had that much of an impact! I don’t really have much experience with EDM besides the radio stuff so the experimental tracks were vastly more impressive to me. Thank you for your comment!

    • @jacksonjames6071
      @jacksonjames6071 Před 3 lety +5

      This statement is so wrong lol. Future bass dates back to 2010 where an artist named burial started incorporating modern basses into his normal garage music, then later artists like rustie, RL Grime and Hudson mohawke pioneered the first ever pure future bass style. From then it evolved slowly until artists like flume and cashmere cat pioneered it into the modern future bass we know today. Divinity has nothing to do with it. And the whole story was made up by a bunch of Porter fans lol.

      @@marnotreally btw really enjoyed your reactions man. I'm glad you didn't just fawn over every single track just because it's a bit different, like a lot of people do. Its great that you were actually analysing each tracks for what they are. BTW, if you're really interested in actual experimental electronic music (unlike worlds), I'd suggest you check out some recent projects from KOAN Sound. Tbh, artists like Porter Robinson aren't really underrated when you come to realise people like KOAN Sound, Culprate, Ekcle (the new future) and many more exist. Their (KOAN Sound's) Intervals above EP was absolutely stunning. They have such a unique style that I cannot name a single song that sounds even remotely like the ones in that EP. Even if you're not doing a reaction, I suggest you check that out. Also, their debut LP, Polychrome, is also a stellar piece of work, with a few of my all time favourite electronic tracks (Viridian Dream, the zulla, jongmyo & cobalt).

    I think a lot of what's missing is the context. In today's context it just sounds like good music, but when it came out, EDM was very stale. Porter's music also took a complete 180 with this album and no one could believe it was made by the same person. It was so moving that there were many people dedicated to recreating the live show experience without much of the source material. It probably sounds a bit stale currently because a lot of what's popular now stemmed from this style.
    If nothing else, I recommend relistening to this with the visual aspect. The music actually only tells half the story.

      Oh this album is amazing, don’t get me wrong. It really is just conflicted. The high points (all the tracks without features) are INCREDIBLE. It is still a game changer and I can see that as someone who isn’t even that big of an EDM fan. Good music transcends genre and this record is a classic, albeit a conflicted one.

    Such a fun album and such a fun reaction! Love how in depth you go with what you like/dislike/love about the album, the passion about the music and personality are soooo fun to watch, it’s amazing!
    I definitely understand your frustration with some of the more predictable tracks in the album. If it helps, one thing that might help contextualize the poppier tracks on the album is the time period back when Worlds first dropped. Those mid-tempo synth pop tracks definitely resemble a LOT of formulaic edm in recent (maybe the past 3-5) years especially, but back in 2014 the sound felt like a fresh departure from the Festival House and Hard Dubstep sounds that were absolutely dominating the edm scene (and Porter had himself gotten stuck into being expected to dj/make those dubstep & high paced, noisier dance sounds because of how popular his previous Spitfire EP was back then). So at the time, the placement of each track and feature on here, to many, felt a lot more unexpected and imaginative. Not to say it’d all never been done before, but even the anthem-friendly, lyrical, world-building tracks on here felt a ton more “Whoa is this even Porter/EDM?” at the time. Nowadays the more sing-a-long friendly songs on here sound eerily similar to the expected Future Bass formulas that Porter and this album, as well as Flume, went on to inspire (Illenium and pretty much any huge modern edm artist today, while still amazing, come to mind) but seeing it from the lense of being made in a completely Skrillex and Martin Garrix-style dominated era and setting the tone for the rest of the genre’s decade might help make those tracks more enjoyable and understandable

    • @marnotreally
      @marnotreally  Před 3 lety +26

      I’ve come to realise that from all the comments! It seemed like I would have appreciated this a lot more if I had contextualised it in the year that it came out. But even then, I didn’t know as much about EDM or even music for that matter as I do now. Isn’t it fascinating that even tho the featured tracks feel a bit stale now, the solo tracks are still phenomenal and untouchable? Wonder why those sounds didn’t catch on. Probably because they’re super unique to Porter.

    One thing about this album is that it paints a story from the first to the last track, regardless of feature or not. Since release I have well over 100 plays in its completion and cannot listen to individual tracks because to me it is one masterpiece as a whole. I've never even thought of individual tracks as better or worse than each other, the "weaker" ones just add to the overall anticipation and flow of the album. And oh how it has aged amazingly..

    My personal top three (I’m no music expert just to keep in mind)
    - Sad Machine
    This was honestly the first song I’ve heard in the whole track, and I instantly fell in love with it before deciding to listen to the rest of the album. The one think I liked about this song are the vocals, the mix of Porter himself singing alongside the robot is a cool concept. Along with that, the main melody is very much catchy as well. Plus it feels like there is a story present in the song. If I were to critique this song in any way, I would say that it does kind of repeat itself a lot, but other than that, it’s my #1.
    - Goodbye to a World
    Goodbye to a World gives off so many moods for me. Sad, nostalgic, warm, happy, lonely.. I got kind of emotional first hearing it. Especially when listening to it when you’re home alone, looking out the window as it rains outside while sitting on your bed. I cannot describe how much I enjoy this song. It is an amazing grand finally. (Another cool thing about it is how Porter literally decides to kill off the robot as well. Showing that this was the end of an adventure) If I had to critique this song, I feel like the beginning part, along with the vocals are a tad bit too long, along with the actual EDM bit at the end being waaayyy to short. But overall, I really enjoyed this song. #2
    - Fresh Static Snow
    Fresh Static Snow didn’t really have an emotional impact as much as the first two, however I still enjoyed this song nonetheless. It felt like there was also a story behind this one too, and how there were rough sounding noises pared up with soft ones too. Overall, great song. #3
    If I had to put in some honorable mentions, I would say Sea of Voices and Flicker are very good as well.

    I know I'm a little late but die hard porter fan here I wanna bring up a couple points about the album! First of all, since Fellow Feeling is your favorite track I wanna explain the story, for it made it such a better song when I found out about it. As an artist, porter stressed when this album came out, that it was him breaking out of the norm of subgenera (electric house) that he felt he was tied to by his fans. Listen to early releases like say my name or spitfire to hear the style of music he refers to. I think that's what it means when wikipedia mentioned "breaking the formulaic components of edm. Anyway, back to fellow feeling it seems clear to me that the strings in the beginning of the track symbolize what it was that he found beautiful. The track progresses and a voice appears, claiming "now please, hear what I hear" and plays a bit that's very off tempo, and out of key, and fundamentally unpleasing to the ear. I think that part is him expressing how the style of his old music sounded to him. That wasn't the music he wanted to make. The end, combines the chords of the strings, with the electronic aspect that he was tied to (four on the floor, snare on every half, with a classic buildup right before), to create something that still will keep some fans engaged, while staying true to what he finds beautiful. He manages a way to find balance between those two styles. This is shown in the lyrics, "I cried, for I didn't think it could be true. That you and I might have always known one another. And that we can not only evoke, but conjure a place of our own." I think that is super cool he was able to find that middle ground. If you like fresh static snow, check out "fresh static snow visual remake" on CZcams. It's a remake by a random producer of the FSS live version he plays at his "worlds live show'. It's is truly wonderful and the only one live version that I like even more than the original (although I do LOVE FSS). Also, Divinity is one of my fav tracks by him. IMO it is one of the key tracks in worlds along w Sad machine, Flicker, FSS, Sea of Voices, Fellow Feeling, and Goodbye to a world. But you have your own music taste and are fully entitled to your own liking (:. Last point, the ending of Goodbye to a World where it sounds like the system is crashing is representative on the symbolism of the "Worlds" album, in that it symbolizes escapism and being able to escape into another world. For porter, one of his key escapes was Starwars Battlestar Galactica MMORPG. At a certain point the game got taken down and the crashing computer sound symbolizes the end of that world in his MMORPG, along with any other alternate worlds that anybody has lost (Like the end of this album for example). Idk if you made it this far but yeee I love porter and I'm excited for his sophomore album coming 4/23! His side project Virtual self is inspired by a whole other style of music, particularly Dance Dance Revolution and is super cool music if you wanna check that out too. Only one EP for Virtual Self. Loved hearing your review and I'm glad you enjoyed the album too! left a like on the vid (:

    I always love seeing people react to this album because the listen front to back is so awesome especially the first time through. Also a good reason a lot of songs from the album sound close to modern radio edm is because this album set the trend many of them have followed. Youd be hard pressed to find a modern edm producer who wouldnt call porter an inspiration to some degree

I'm sad that you didn't care for Divinity, but to each their own. That song has a special place in my heart. The other features I still love because they're part of the full experience. They're not necessarily the best songs on the album, but I say this album is an 11/10. So even if you take away a point for those songs, I'm still saying 10/10 album.

    The funny thing is that with this album, it opened a lot of doors to how electronic music could be made, from using actual instruments, flipping a genre over its head, making grand sounds, and most importantly, adding emotion to an album. If it wasn't for this album, EDM would have never made it as far as it has today.
    Here's some EDM albums that I personally enjoyed:
    Apashe - Renaissance (this man wrote a piece for an entire orchestra to play, and used it as a sample, combining both trap and classic instruments together to create this badass album.)
    San Holo - album1 (Although some of the songs have some sort of commercial sound to em, this album has some amazing moments that I definitely recommend. He did a remix for Porter as well!)
    DROELOE - A Matter of Perspective (two artists, one who does 3D art and one who does the music, set their vision out in this album. Although it has a lot of features, every song has its charm to it.)
    RIOT - Overkill (this album is as over the top as it gets, as it is a "in your face" dubstep album. However the amount of dedication to each song to tell a story between humanity and a threatening force. Again this album may definitely not be your cup of tea.)
    six impala - WFLYTD (6 artists collab to make an album together, and you have the most wild album out there)

    Porter Robinson is special to me, as weird as it is to say. Most EDM I like because it gets me pumped, because it's good to vibe to. Emotional in the sense that I can feel good and vibe. But his albums break the mold and just get me fucked in so many ways most EDM can't. Obviously I like all the fan favourites (Sad Machine, Shelter, Flicker) But Fresh Static Snow? Something Comforting (from his latest album) and Goodbye to a World along with so many other songs are just raw, evocative and genuine in a way music sometimes just can't. It's not hyperbolic to say I've been moved to tears listening to his music many times because I truly feel a lot of the lyrics and the music, whether pounding and loud or soft and subdued, amplifies the experience. Porter Robinson is such a damn good artist and I love Worlds so much. It's amazing seeing people who have no idea what his musics like reacting to it and being introduced and, I know it's a bit corny, I'm so glad you loved it dude

    People forget that EDM is made to be listened on festivals while you socialize with others, thats why its simplistic and formulaic, its built around an experience for the audience, the entire relationship of having the buildups and the drops and the more calm parts is all thinking on the experience of the audience.
    If the songs were 100% just a repeating beat, it wouldnt be appealing, same if they were 100% just a populated energetic drop
    So it goes up and goes down in energy and sometimes even in bpm so people have the time to concentrate on jumping up and dancing but also being able to talk and to zone out in thw audiovisual experience
    EDM has been walking hand to hand with pop for a while not but it is not pop

    I know this is an old video now, but the cultural impact this album had that went almost completely unnoticed, is astounding. Tracks prior to this release always sound flat and bland and predictable. Worlds sounds incredibly big, emotional and thoughtful. Then you turn your attention to modern tracks after Worlds and the entire dynamic changed and everyone started improving their mixing and ideas in their tracks. Porter Robinson is the EDM underdog that barely anyone knows about. He stays out of pop culture intentionally, yet he managed to change the industry for good. Pretty impressive really.

      @marnotreally  Před 3 lety +3

      I definitely see what you mean. I’m moved towards not scoring albums in my recent reviews and even when I do, its to be taken with a grain of salt. A critic’s opinion is merely an opinion, it doesn’t reduce the power, impact or meaning of the creative work. It really is just based on feeling. This album in particular was amazing, and I’ve returned to so many tracks dozens of times from my own playlists. Some people just don’t like EDM the same way some people just don’t like hip-hop (my goto genre).
      I’m so glad you found inspiration in this wonderful music. You seem to be on the right path of not letting critics shape your opinion on music and that’s really amazing.
      Only a few months ago did I start listening to albums without reading reviews and found that I often disagree with critics. It’s why I didn’t want to see WORLDS reviews and was sad when I accidentally glanced them. I still feel like I was able to come with my own opinion though. I still think the tracks without features are timeless masterpieces and the ones with features to be great but not much more than that.
      Thanks for the thoughtful comment and I hope you keep going with not letting people’s opinion hinder your enjoyment. We could all take a page from your book. When I do these videos it’s more about the passion of sharing excitement and having a deeper thought about the stuff we consume without being pretentious, snobby or disrespectful.
