  • The Tecsun PL-310ET AM FM LW Shortwave receiver is my recommendation for those looking for a portable radio that is inexpensive, has decent reception performance and uses standard AAs. This radio has been on my desk since I purchased it many years ago and remains there for daily use. Cruising the Evening Medium Wave Band (AM in the States), is a treat. The bandwidth control shines along with the use of a great passive loop and viewing the radio's signal/noise ratio function.

Overall, there are some new radios coming out from Tecsun, one is going to have SSB so you can listen to HAMs and will probably be under $80. Is the PL-310ET still a viable shortwave radio? Yes. It runs on simple and easy to find AAs, has great audio, and will still supply the owner with many years of tuning bliss :)

I have had a 310ET for a cupple years now. Knowing it has bandwidth controls I started using it and it definitely makes a difference in sound quality. With all the smaller portables out there this radio has pretty decent sound quality. For the price point it's a really good reciever. Also watched another video. The person showed how by using the lower bandwidth settings like 2 or even 1 it increases the radio sensitivity. When doing a ETM scan on SW or MW you pick up more stations on 1 vs. 6 on the bandwidth settings. Haven't tried that yet myself but going to try it. This is a really neat little radio

Yes, but 1kHz bandwidth on the filter will reduce the audio quality to a great extent.

To defeat soft mute on fading signals at night and strange audio pumping and distortion on strong AM signals tune 1kz off frequency. The volume will drop so it`s best to use headphones. A good example is what I heard on 1210. The voice was clipping in and out rapidly and distorted. Tuning 1kz down would have completely stopped this and the signal would become very clear. Also, when using headphones the audio sounds much better on the lower AM bandwidth settings allowing you to get even better clarity on DX targets.

Thank you for this info. I just ordered the Tecsun PL-310et radio to replace my dismal Retekess V115 AM/FM/SW radio. The FM and AM is fine for local stations. It's pretty much below average on SW and MW DXing but I do like the MP3 player and recording ability. It was only a $25 radio so I can't expect much. This Tecsun seems to have everything I need and appears to be much better on medium wave.

Hi. I've had one of these for some years now. Its good value for money but crippled by AM breakthrough on parts of the SW spectrum and that annoying AGC pumping that grates on my ears. I've also had to return one that was deaf on SW. The PL-380 is easier on the years but not as sensitive. However, the R108 is the best in this small radio class and competes well with the vintage Sony SW100 which cost 10 times as much! 73s

Hi. Thanks for your reply. As someone who has both of these too. I prefer the R108. I find that the 310, while being very sensitive, is prone to bad AM breakthrough on SW in urban areas. I also find that it's rough ACC really grates on my hearing. The R108, along with my aged Sony SW 100, are my go to pocket SW portables. 73s and GDX.

@@filippocorti6760 Below O degrees C & over 40 degrees C is the problem for Lithium-ion batteries. They will be damaged & could even explode if charging is attempted in outdoor freezing temperatures. Lithium rechargeable (AA) 1.5v have only recently become available. They do have the advantage of running at a constant 1.5v & then just cut out instead of fading until flat in standard rechargeable batteries but the same problems of operating temperature imitation exist.
