Its gonna be a 3 team dog fight for the NL West with the Dodgers, Dbacks and Giants, and one of the two who doesn't win it will be a wildcard, if not both. NL West is the toughest division in baseball period and whoever wins it each year earns it.

    This story had a happy ending. Posey won MVP the next year after missing the rest of 2011. He was lights out for 5 straight years following this play. The rules were changed to prevent this sort of barreling play, something invented by Pete Rose and which should have been outlawed much earlier. The catcher is also no longer permitted to block the baseline in an egregious manner before he has the ball. So it all came out for the best.

    I'm here after Buster announced retirement age 34! This collision rightly changed the game. Big crush collisions at home plate are history now. Although it was the norm then, Collins slanting left and diving into Posey when he could have dove straight towards the plate on a clear line. Posey came back had a huge year this year after a year of rest through Covid. Catchers and players in any sport are not video game characters.

    • @zebman9228
      @zebman9228 Před 2 lety +3

      He did not slant left very much. He just braced for contact with his left shoulder. Posey for some reason was not able to get out of the way and almost looked like he resigned himself to have contact and swivled into the base path without the ball Why get out of the way? Because he did not have the baseball and no way to tag out runner so why try to make contact.

    Fun to listen to the argument between you all. Here's my read.
    1) From a philosophical point of view, the point of the runner is to get to home plate, but the runner makes no effort to get to home and instead just runs full speed into the catcher. In terms of "what the game is supposed to be about," it makes sense to make what the runner did illegal.
    2) Now, that slide will be illegal, in part because it's an improper slide. On a headfirst slide you need to hit the ground first.
    3) Had the slide been legal, and Posey turned without the ball to make the tag, the runner would be safe because Posey was blocking the way to the plate without the ball (whether the runner touched home or not).
    4) I wonder if any runners are going to get hurt by sliding into catchers ready to lay down some beats. Broken ankle, anyone?
    5) At some level, this isn't going to change baseball this much. If you're going to send the runner, it's because you think he can beat the ball to the plate, not run through the catcher to force a drop. I'm ok with that.

If the runner was allowed to tackle the shortstop to break up a double play, then sure, they might be comparable. However, they have to slide towards the base without putting their feet up, allowing the shortstop to jump over them.

    The fact of the matter is, this is a players livelihood. If there was ever a way to protect players towards having longer careers even after retirement, then people should be all for that. This was a play that could have ended Posey's career and it's even amazing he was able to come back from this and still play at a world series champion and all-star caliber level. As a fan, I wanna see this type of player play for 15 years rather than cut it short with an excuse like "well, its just part of the game." As a parent, you want kids looking up to players like posey because they are true professionals that play the game hard and carry themselves professionally on and off the field. If you guys want contact, please indulge yourselves in the other contact sports that are out there like football or ice hockey. If you can't get enough, then please records these games or have long nights on youtube watching highlights of collisions throughout the years. But, my god, even those sports have tried to prioritize player safety as a necessity. So my question to you is this, what makes baseball any different?

Guys like Rose, Mantle and Dykstra have slowly been replaced by multimillionaire pantywaists who prefer to jeopardize the outcome of the game rather than their physical comfort.
