- The first and only update of this project - Goodford MK4. After much deliberation and pontification i decided to retire Goodford MK3. This layout kept me out of trouble for a couple of years and got close to completion but was never quite right. The dynamics of what it was designed around wasn't in sync with what i get from the model railway hobby. I made several shnages over the period of a year but it was never quite right.
In April 2023 I took the brave decision to start Goodford MK4 and this video is an update of where i have managed to get up to in the last 3 months.
Impressive yet pleasingly simple layout. People try to cram too much into their layouts when they have this sort of large space, to the detriment of realism. Keeping a simple track plan actually allows for more realistic operation. If i had the space your layout would be exactly what I would go for!

Thank you for giving the dimensions of your layout! People often forget to mention this. It gives an idea of what can be achieved in a given space. I think the track plan is excellent - well done.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, Oak Road is one of the layouts that’s been a true inspiration that has resulted in this layout being designed the way it is!
For anyone else who may be interested, the other layouts which I drew inspiration from alongside Oak Road were Weaver Hill and Euxton Junction.
@@GoodfordModelRailway I always intended my trainset to be a good old fashioned roundy roundy that the paying public could watch trains whizz by - especially young children. Thanks for your kind words and you certainly don’t sound like a fanboy. I wish you well with the build and if it looks like the previous incarnation (which I’ve just looked at), it’s going to be a fine layout indeed 👍

This is a fantastic solution to your long-standing quandary. Looks seriously impressive after a relatively short time. Great to see a layout concept which rewrites usual conventions.

Thanks, it’s so easy when planning a layout to get carried away and fill every inch with track and then wonder why it’s hard to do any scenery and make it look like the vision. Fingers crossed the balance is right on this layout 👍

@GoodfordModelRailway That's not actually my layout, Dave, Its a mates and its called Exford Park, and is on RMweb. I do know that some real Devon cliffs soil was used for colour matching and on the layout 😉.

Layout is looking good. I have been using iTrain for the last 12 months and it is very good. You don't need ABC braking. iTrain will do it all for you providing that you calibrate each locomotive's speed curve. It's really accurate with just one occupancy feedback per block. K 🙂
Thanks! I have started to use itrain and I think i will be using it for 2 of the lines which go through the station and leave the other 2 (including the junction) to be controlled using the Z21 app and for this I will probably just use ABC braking. It’s still all undecided though. It feels like quite a mammoth task to overcome so maybe just small sections at a time and I’ll get there eventually…!
The 4 tracks, station and junction look a great basis for a layout. Plenty of storage for your needs too. Will be great to see this one develop!

That looks fantastic with the large fiddle yard but I do think the oval running circuit will get boring very quickly.

Hi. New layout looks awesome. I love the junction with the tracks going off in different directions, will give you a lot of interest when you run the trains. I get what you mean about better to watch the trains go by rather than round you, especially when one side is generally all a fiddle yard. Where did you get your display cabinets from? I've been looking to get some and they look ideal. Cheers, John.
Thanks for your kind comments, John. The cabinets were just cheap ones from Amazon and I’ve just not used the glass on the front of them as I don’t trust they won’t warp and the glass would smash on the the fiddle yard! A job somewhere on the list to sort them out… 😂

Its nice that you will now have a layout that you like and it in this stage of the build looks interesting will keep a watch out to see how it continues. I run my Train Set with iTrains so will be interested to see you sort this out also but as you said it will be used just to run trains on a schedule did you also consider Train Controller as this may be better for this. I wish you good luck and hope all goes well.

Thanks for the reply and ok thats good iTrains is very good and can do a lot so the best of luck in sorting it out I think you will find it easer than I did but did make some not very good videos on my getting to grips with it and the limited things I have been able to do with it and there are no end of YT ones on it the one I used the most was Bob Fullers series which he is still doing..

@@robertstrainset6556 I have watched a few of Bob Fuller’s videos but ended up setting up most of it following the guide from @DCCTrainAutomation. It seems to be quite comprehensive for what I need it to do.
Nice to see you back. Great wood working skills. I guess all the sunny weather in June allowed you to do all of this. I noticed you had a grey footbridge in one of the corners of the room near a camera. I was just wondering where you go that from? I am after something similar so I am a little curious.
Thanks, the weather has been perfect for annoying the neighbours with chopping up a few trees worth of wood! The footbridge is a combination of 3 of the faller 131378. I won’t be using it so will be throwing it on an auction site at some point although not sure if anyone would be able to modify to fit their station.

Hi Nigel, believe it or not, the wood was from Wickes. Always a mixed bag with them as I’ve had warped timbers delivered from them in the past. The plywood for the base/trackbed is the 12mm structural type. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dave

How have you constructed the frame? Did you watch someone else doing it?
The frame was constructed using 2x1 softwood and was done after the track plan was confirmed to ensure no joists would sit under point motors. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dave
