  • The House voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill that would force a sale of TikTok to a US company. For years politicians have threatened a ban, but this latest attempt finally gained traction. Could Britain follow suit in America's crackdown on TikTok? Conservative MP Iain Duncan Smith and writer Matthew Continetti discuss.

    Why? Have a look at who owns the company.

      Middle aged guy at work uses it as his main source of news. He knows more than anyone about the western terrorist attack in Moscow. It looks way better then Twitter, which to me is 100% waste of time. And why is nobody mentioning data harvesting by western companies? What's the difference? What threat is China to me? I'd probably prefer them to be harvesting my data rather than the criminals running the west. I'm in Canada, by the way. Who do you think I trust less?

    The key concern with this tik tok ban is that it sets a precedent for any and all social media platforms having to toe the line by government statute, sell up or face being banned! What if they manage to convince Congress that Elon Musk is a “bad player” and a threat to national security? He’ll be forced to sell up or be banned; I agree with IDS on some issues but his CRDS (China Russia Derangement Syndrome) is somewhat addling his thinking!!

  • @napoleonfeanor
    @napoleonfeanor Před měsícem +4

    IDS still exists? Never liked the guy and leaders like him were the reason the Tories lost until they had the ghastly tory-blairite Cameron win after Brown's government became really unpopular. Sadly there is no actual conservative party and the few conservative tories had no support for their agenda.
    He is right on China however. In their newest two sessions period, the country is becoming more and more centrally authoritarian, going further and further away of the post-mao model of collective leadership of their dictatorial bureaucracy. Xi took away powers from other institutions such as the people's congress and especially the office of the PM, who was especially humiliated this time by not even having the symbolic powers and a press conference after the two sessions anymore. The relatively well liked Li Kekiang sad during the last such press conference that about 600m still live on under 160$ per month. He was replaced later and died under strange circumstances not long ago. At another big party meeting last year, Xi had his predecessor Hu thrown out by security infront of cameras. The man wants to be in complete control of everything and purges people constantly while China's economy is going down

    "China commits genocide" said unironically after accusing TikTok of allowing criticism of Israel! That crime is true of both, but the free west only allows criticism of one, China also only allows criticism of one. Which is superior?

    • @LeoStaley
      @LeoStaley Před měsícem

      Tiktok allows more criticism of China than of Palestine. And that's why they want to ban it. They don't want people knowing the truth of the genocide.

    Yes, TikTok should get banned but the law should be really strictly tailored to companies giving data to adversary countries. Let it not become another anti freedom of speech and surveillance law.
    How about all the anti-white "hate speech" on tiktok and other platforms and media? I sometimes wonder if China intentionally tweaks the algorithmic recommendations to promote insane views among the young in thr West. It would be interesting to see if the type of recommended content on blank accounts is different in countries which are friendly to China...
