The 4th Doctor in his first episode "You may be a doctor but I'm "THE Doctor", the definite article you might say". I thought this reference was pretty obvious, in a show where the main character has gone by "The Doctor" for the last 60 years. This was also a couple episodes after Alpha Centauris second appearance and the Sontarans introduction too.

Thanks for the reminder. I always associate that line with the 1st Doctor when he comes back in The Three Doctors. When Jo asks who he is, doesn't he say "I'm THE Doctor, the definite article". Now I have to go watch that again to check - maybe he said "the original" and I'm getting things mixed up.

It can be a challenge as roles for south east Asian actors, especially males, are very limited. However, hopefully more south east Asian writers and directors can break through. Jackie slaps him after he messes up and Rose misses a year, Francine slaps him (and I think he says “it’s always the mothers, every time”) and then when Sylvia slaps him RTD is kind of “completing the set” and the doctor even references this in his line afterwards, though I forget exactly what it is.

The most annoying part is that videos like the ones you reacted to get so many views as well and they often convince some people to stop watching the show because it's apparently too "woke" or trying to send 'the message'. Also the fact that around 90% of these videos often have zero arguments to back up their claims and are often just 10-20 minute rants about how the show is supposedly "woke" and making huge reaches (clearly from either not watching the show at all or not having watched it in a while) rather than actually focusing their reviews on the highlights or downsides of the episode they're talking about like a good reviewer should do.

One thing I've noticed watching a few Fandom Menace podcasts is that there is something very important missing in them that is present in most other shows that discuss media: discourse. As anyone who is old enough to remember Siskel and Ebert will tell you, people get very passionate about media they like and often times they won't always agree on a given piece of media. One of my favorite podcasts is Castle Super Beast with Pat and Woolie of Two Best Friends fame, and they'll get in disagreements over video games or other media from time to time. But I honestly can't think of a single example of any these Fandom Menace influencers ever having a major disagreement with each other. The closest thing I can think of is when they finally kicked Overlord DVD to the curb for constantly reporting on inaccurate "leaks" from the entertainment industry. The fact that there is very little disagreement between them regarding the media they consume shows just how much groupthink has set in with them. It's gotten to the point where one of them will either misinterpret or straight up make up something that they saw in a TV show or movie, the rest of them will nod in agreement that it happened, and before you know it you'll see their followers repeating it all over social media. It really is pathetic how they no longer seem to have any independent thought whatsoever.

The problem with The Meep pronoun scene is it makes Rose look like a pedant. I know trans people and they don’t go around policing other peoples interactions with any new person that they meet. If they have a mixture of masculine and feminine characteristics they will just bring up their language preferences casually in conversation themselves.
It actually paints a negative image of trans people. Most trans people are more chill than this and the episode does trans people a dis-service by making them out to be busy-bodies, policing everyone’s social interactions. It’s a problem which is exacerbated by the character being so underwritten.
I know this won’t be a popular opinion here, but that’s how I feel about it.
Also the lines at the end about how the Doctor, like Rose is both male and female and neither and more was really tone deaf. Trans woman don’t see themselves as both male and female and neither and more, they just see themselves as female.
Maybe I didn’t get it and she decided in that moment she wasn’t a trans woman and was instead non-binary, but I think if that’s the case, RTD’s introduction of the first trans character in Doctor Who is undercut by having her change from a trans woman to a non-binary person by the end of the episode and I reckon he probably shouldn’t have done that if he wanted this creative choice to have resonance.

Okay, I discussed the backlash with my friends (and I always listen to my friends because they're funny, civilised people), and here's my conclusion:
The "woke stuff" (is "woke" even a real word? It just sounds wack, as if a five-year-old just invented it out of nowhere without setting a definition properly) is subtle. As in, I didn't even notice that Rose was non-binary until the end, because I was to busy having fun with the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, not to mention THE MEEP!
And even then, I wasn't offended at all when I did put two and two together, because Rose is a nice character, and any pronoun is as cool as bowties (they're universally cool, and they'll always will be).
The opinions of those "fans" are especially stupid, because Russell T. Davies effectively started out by making shows that actively promote what some would call "wokeness" (for example, Queer As Folk). Not to mention, the revival (as well as expanded universe stuff in the Wilderness Years, like Izzy Sinclair and Fitz Kreiner) has always been about LGBT representation, so why bother bring up that you hate that sort of thing now? Yep, these videos were OBVIOUSLY made by "diehard fandom".
And finally, Doctor Who is supposed to be a celebration of humanity AS A WHOLE. If it weren't, we'd just end up stuck in a Hell where The Celestial Toymaker is always praised, rather than rightfully criticised, for being an Oriental stereotype whose sentient dolls spout off the N-word whenever (thank goodness that we now have Neil Patrick Harris to the rescue). That'd just be horrible, and we wouldn't have had a Revival if Doctor Who was just that sort of thing.
"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views."

I feel like Gate of Theories is just a young guy leaving the far-right political bubble that a lot of teenage boys find themselves in, and are trying to realign himself politically but is struggling with past piases and viewpoints. What he's saying is something I think 19/20 year old me would have said - "I agree with more wokeness but this is *too* woke".
And sometimes he is close to having a decent point or understanding why, but just fully misses the end goal. Rose asking the Meep for pronouns can come off as forced and awkward, but Rose is a teenage trans girl - of course she's going to ask, pronouns are something that matters a lot to her. The "Let it go" line is similarly odd, but if you read it as Donna just having a jab at her best friend, which she is, then it works better.
Although I think changing that line to "Something *this face* could never do", rather than "Something men can't do" works better. Doesn't fit with the message but is so much less clunky and weird.

But I didn't like that scene for other reasons (ie, how is the Doctor in an emergency situation if he can stop and have a chat with Newton, change the English word "mavity", and then get back in the Tardis and still crash out of control in a spaceship millions of light years beyond the edge of the universe)

Colour-blind casting was intended to give actors a chance to play classical characters from which they were previous barred. There's only so many times you can play Othello before wanting to try your hand at the Prince of Denmark.
Here, it's just confusing in a show that was meant to get children excited about history. Since Isaac Newton isn't a fictional character, and this is so obviously incorrect, it's only been placed there to generate unrest. And when the showrunner seems hell-bent on upsetting fans, I don't see how this helps anyone. But I'm sure my point will be lost in all the shouting. 😢

And it's notable the majority of complainants are white males. I am a white male as it happens too but I don't feel angry about inclusive content on Doctor Who. Of course pointing out white males complaining about inclusivity makes me a gas lighter in the eyes of Dave Cullen and others. For years societal norms marginalised women, disabled people, Blacks, Asians and any other non-white groups. Dave and the others want to keep it that way, represent majority views, not minorities. It's ignorant and bigoted. I used to like Dave and Nerdrotic etc years ago, but I'm just so fed up of the constant whining. Yeah, but why is this alien from another world talking like present-day Earth humans? I'm not talking about speaking English. I'm talking about using specific vernacular like "chosen pronoun." Because I'm pretty sure the rest of the universe moved past "chosen pronouns" eons ago, so wouldn't this be a bit like someone from 100,000 BC asking you what your chosen foraging spot is? It's not even a thing for you.

What's even more baffling is the role-reversal of Rose and the Doctor.

Rose: A random present-day Earth teenager with absolutely no knowledge of the universe outside of high school science class.
Yet ROSE is the one shown being more considerate of Meep's "chosen pronoun" instead of the Doctor. That makes about as much sense as that idiotic resolution to the metacrisis, where RTD just says "fuck it" and has the characters say "let it go."
