    Doesn't this clip just prove that even in 1992 the Scots were being told voting Labour would save us from the Tories. Fat lot of good that did.

    The Scottish people should be made to watch this. Nothing has changed, scaremongering and lies by the Unionists while a positive message from the SNP

    • @willcurrie3375
      @willcurrie3375 Před 10 lety +6

      I don't think its scaremongering or lies to disagree with the positive message the snp.
      If unionists agreed with the snp's view on how Scotland would function outside of the UK they wouldn't be unionists, would they?

    • @robicenco1
      @robicenco1 Před 10 lety +5

      There is scaremongering on the Unionist side, but there is also scaremongering on the pro-independence side. Talk of Westminster rolling back powers in the event of a no vote, "punishing" Scotland in various undefined ways, there never being another referendum again, or even of one never again being *allowed* - I hear all these regularly from independence supporters and I think all are false.

      Yes Kevin.
      By a whole 5%.
      Restrict the numbers to those that will be alive in 10 years (old and scared people who were targeted by the Better Together campaign tip the scales) and the outcome changes.

  • @IJ215
    @IJ215 Před 10 lety +9

    Michael Heseltine is spot on here. Labour and Liberals said devolution would kill Scottish nationalism and 15 years on we have a referendum on the issue. I predict (and hope) that the Better Together Campaign will win. However depending on the state of Europe and North Sea Oil, I fear that Scottish independence is inevitable in the next referendum in about 25 years time.

    Bloody hell, listen to these guys calmly talking about what they believe in without resorting to buzz words and bullshit. Hope we vote Yes next week, perhaps we can have this again in Scotland. On another note, bitter-sweet to see John Smith here... he was a good man, his early death robbed Labour of a great leader, and probably the country of its next Prime Minister.

  • @robicenco1
    @robicenco1 Před 10 lety +12

    It's notable how supercilious and patronising Smith was. And it's interesting how he, like so many Scottish Labour people, simply cannot bring himself to utter the word "England". There is Scotland, there is the United Kingdom, and there are "other parts of the United Kingdom", but to these people England just doesn't exist. Gordon "Nations and Regions" Brown was the worst offender in recent years but had Smith lived I suspect he would have been equally bad.

    • @Hevva67
      @Hevva67 Před 10 lety +2

      John Smith would've made a great leader, unlike Blair or Brown... In this clip, he just doesn't seem to look as though he knows where his loyalties lie.. England? Scotland? Britiain?

    • @robicenco1
      @robicenco1 Před 10 lety +2

      Hevva67
      He was a better man than either Blair or Brown, and a better politician than Brown - no dispute on either point. But as I revisit these old clips it becomes clear to me that he shared the deep-rooted negativity towards England that the majority of his party (not just the Scots - English Labourites are also heavily anti-English) seems to share.
      He just can't bring himself to utter the E-word. His loyalty was to Britain or the United Kingdom but the largest part of that entity - i.e. England - was something he preferred not to think about or even admit the existence of. English politicians have no problem discussing Scotland as an entity in its own right, but for some reason Scottish politicians scramble either to deny that England exists or to divide it into "regions" that compete with each other. England is a problem for them and they don't like thinking, never mind speaking about it.
      Salmond is a noble exception - most of the time.

    • @FrogmortonHotchkiss
      @FrogmortonHotchkiss Před 10 lety +2

      I'd say it's more that the argument for independence is still as valid, and still faces the same forms of opposition.
      It also tells me that if it's a No vote tomorrow, this isn't going to just go away. He's put his entire political career into this, it's gaining momentum and Scotland may just manage to break away from the UK. I don't think a No vote would have Salmond slinking off, tail between his legs. He, and the others who feel the same way he does, will carry on the case for an independent Scotland.
