    I'm an englishman and I think you should vote yes. I know I would if I were a scot. Be brave, take the step, believe in yourselves. What have you got to lose, more decades of being controlled by those muppets in westminster? Grasp this opportunity to be what you want to be with both hands. It's going to be hard, but worthwhile things never come easy.
    If you can't do it for yourselves, do it for me. I want to see the look on the westminster boys faces when they get kicked in the nads by the consequences of their own actions.
    We could have been better together, but seeing as we are together on paper they never bothered trying to make that a reality. Just stole your oil and used you for tax experiments.
    A no vote is you agreeing that you can't, that you need westminster, that you aren't brave enough, committed enough, intelligent enough to run your own lives. Why would you accept crap like that, it's the argument to be a victim.
    Look at the no campaign, lots of reasons not to go, not one reason to stay that doesn't benefit them more than you. Every labour politician proposing no is thinking scots don't vote tory. Every tory suggesting no is thinking I like the way it is, f**k the scots.
    Where is what you want in that?
    Do it!

    Lol, the comments on here are hilarious after spending so much time steeped in the relatively polite and considerate world of the Yes Scotland and Better Together Facebook pages.
    This isn't about Scotland versus England, it's about Scotland versus Westminster. Every person making this about some rivalry which doesn't really exist outside sporting events is momentously missing the point.

      John Cook - this just looks like more “whip up a frenzy” nonsense. The great majority of Scots barely think about England or English people. There is a great distrust of Westminister, and a desire to be independent. Actually, it would probably do England good if it was to become independent of Westminister too.

    Churchill was right in one way.,. "The best argument against Democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the electorate".. or in this case a 5 minute read of these ridiculous comments.
    In my opinion Scotland should vote yes.. Its about Scotland making a statement against neo liberal policies that have dominated much of the politics in the last 70 years.
    Working/middle class people should all hope Scotland finds a way to make the change work. Then i hope English people look north and inspired by successful left wing revolution in Scotland do there utmost to rid our selves of puppets (muppets) we have in power. There rich kids and career politicians with no social conscious at all. if we don't do things for the good of society and social justice then whats the point?
    its not about English people hating Scottish People or vice versa, its not even about oil for once.. The world is changing and for these islands and indeed Europe the tide has started turning.. Where we end up is any ones guess.
    Were all different and thats fine, its our humanity that unites us. Don't make the neo liberals job easier by undermining socially democratic ideas with nationalism. This is about political class not working class values.. Normal working and middle class people share similar values the world over. This has been my experience. people generally know whats right and wrong. doing it is a choice. We the 99% are most definitely in this together no matter what flag we stand under....

That admittedly was throughout the past centuries but this 21st century has independent self governing countries, you can find the list of them yourself under England rule when the Union Jack covered the globe . I am aware of the act of union what is your point ? you want to shift focus to it ? this debate was not about " Act of Union " but rather a potential UK without Scotland ,life for both England and the independent people of Scotland if she choose self government. I am stating that Scotland deserves the same consideration to govern herself just as well as India for example now does and the rest of the former Empire do. It would generally make me very sad if Scotland vote yes. I'm 26 years old. I don't fully understand the political and economical impact for a Yes or a No vote.
    All I know is that I'm British, I don't refer to myself as English very often (football matches mostly), I grew up as British, learning about what we the British achieved and being very proud of this amazing nation and it's constant ability to punch above it's weight. with our Industrial, Science and Arts.
    The Scottish Yes Vote may give the Scottish people the identity they feel they have never had. But at the same time they are going to rob 50+million people of theirs in the process.
    I urge the Scottish to Vote No for Independence, by doing so they needn't choose to be Scottish or British they can continue to be both and why would you not want that?

    Alex Salmond blundered when he allowed the younger aged people to vote in the referendum, it was proven that most under 18s in Scotland voted NO and that they accepted they were not only Scottish but British too as dual identity. Salmond should have done his homework before allowing young Scots the vote. After the SNP lost the referendum the older generation of Scots took the can for the defeat as far as Salmond was concerned. Salmond's second gaff, was to allow one million English resident in Scotland to vote but excluded 800,000 Scots living in England from the referendum ? BIG GAFF ! Many of the English voters actually reside in the very areas of the Scottish Highlands & Islands that voted overwhelmingly NO. If Salmond had done his homework he'd have found very many of the Scots living in England would have voted YES, but he didn't and now we know the result.
    Now we have a situation where the SNP will get new powers but I think any new cash earmarked for Scotland might go down to whether English voters agree to hand over £1,500 per Scot provided Cameron wins the next election.
    Cameron done his homework and done a number on Salmond, it's that simple. The currency question was the sledgehammer over Salmond's head he had no answer for, but that isn't surprising for this Marxist politician. Salmond could have introduced the Groat currency within 18 months and pegged it to the pound, after all The Republic of Ireland used the English pound for 40 years before taking up the Euro. Did Ireland go bankrupt ? No, at its lowest point the Irish/English pound fell only 8 pence against the British pound in 40 years of service.
    Salmond's grand vision for Scotland was of a multicultural Scotland with an open door immigration policy, the excuse that there would be too many older Scots to too few younger workers to pay state pensions out ? It's my view Scotland's ancient ethnic culture is protected better under the UK umbrella because most immigrants coming into the country head for England's south east ( London etc). whilst Scotland remains culturally pure. Don't get me wrong, the dream is that Scotland will be Independent one day, just not the kind of left wing Independence promoted by the likes of Salmond and co.

    • @dominicmorgan1685
      @dominicmorgan1685 Před 8 lety

      +truefalse 22% for a whole country is still an excessive amount. And also the rate of unemployment for the rest of the UK is 5.7%. Also doesn't it strike you ass odd that areas like Aberdeen and indeed all the richest parts of Scotland voted no in the referendum. Thus it would appear the most successful people in Scotland favour the union. doesn't that tell you something? Also as for Edinburgh being the most educated city in Europe that is questionable. For a start they go off how many people have a uni degree without stopping to think whether that uni degree is of any use. For example too many degrees across the western world are in bullshit subjects like sociology or gender studies (completely worthless) and they will be included in that statistic in spite of being useless to the economy. Also I don't see why you think so many people going to uni is a good thing. One major problem the west has is too many people going to uni wracking up debts (not via tuition fees mind) that they will never be able to pay off while saturating the market for jobs that require uni degrees like lawyers and solicitors while apprenticeships and training for practical work like plumbing or building is neglected. Thus your boast about Edinburgh being the most educated city in Europe is not likely to help Scotland in the long run. It seems odd to me that Scotland would leave the union supported by the greatest Scottish economist off all time Adam smith (a man who Alex salmond claims to admire) in exchange for becoming an odd mini socialist state (bearing in mind every single socialist economy has collapsed into wrack and ruin). just something to bear in mind

Lands and money can be sold and bought but your own mother tongue passed down is a thing of pride and should not be traded or forgotten. Once it is gone it can't be got back. To then speak with pride is somewhat lacking, except when speaking in someone else's tongue.

I like the union but if the others want independence then that is their choice and I see no problems for England, although London would suffer as we would vote more definitively as one, which would not allow the London-centric view to exist. The London -centric view exists because there is so much diversity in political views across the union that no single view exists, leading to the London ruling elite greater freedom.

The S.N.P.'s first priority and only priority is to win independence for Scotland. Voting for independence is a once in a life time chance, so don't blow it as you will not get a chance like this again. With regards to an independent Scotland joining the E.U. and the Euro, yes there is many in the S.N.P. who would like to see an independent Scotland join the E.U.and the Euro, but there are also many in the S.N.P. who which to only join the Nordic Council and the Council of Europe, the European Free Trade Association and the the European Economic Area while there are others who favor an independent Scotland becoming an associate member of the E.U. but not use the Euro. In the End if people vote for Scottish independence there will be a referendum on what the Scottish people would like to do.

      The same reason the Netherlands doesn't want to be part of a bigger country. That "common history" will still be there if Scotland and England exist as two independent neighbours in the future. If you don't understand why Scottish independence supporters want to be independent from the UK then you don't know enough about the issue. And no, we are not all seen as "Brits" outside Scotland. Very often when people from outside Scotland talk about "British people" they mean English people exclusively. Scotland has its own national identity.
      Would you like it if Scottish people stuck their noses into Dutch constitutional issues? When the average Scottish person knows nothing about Dutch history and culture? No, I think Dutch people wouldn't be very happy if Scottish people instructed you to make decisions that would make your country worse off, when they know nothing about your country. Scottish people don't get involved in matters that are only for Dutch people to decide, so it would be nice if you as a Dutchman showed Scottish people the same courtesy.

It's always about the Labour party versus the Tories. If the Maritime lines were drawn as longitude and latitude - Scotland would be the richest European Oil producer. A Vote of YES in September would mean the people of Scotland could control their own majority by the vote of the people and not have to waste their people on what Westminster wants.

    The question should be 'what will England do without Scotland?'
    We all know and the Westminster establishment know that once Scotland gets independence, their fellow Celtic partners - Wales and Nothern Ireland - will follow suit and go independent. Who knows, maybe the three Celtic nations will form their own union and then watch how quick England fails.
    We're not better together, the UK government only want Scotland to stay solely because the money they generate from the oil. Scotland will become a very rich state - richer than the UK as a whole never mind England - and that would be catastrophic for the governments baby, London.

    • @dominicmorgan1685
      @dominicmorgan1685 Před 8 lety +1

      +jimmycormack so richly deserve? don't half have a high opinion of yourself do you. You do realise that the Scandinavian countries run budget surpluses but the Scottish government spent £64 billion while Scotland only brought in around £56 billion in taxes (bear in mind that the SNP and Scottish labour would increase spending so you can expect that gap to only get wider). That would mean in the first year alone Scotland would be 8 billion in debt on top of the debt they would take from the UKs overall debt (Scotland would probably take something like 15% though the uk government actually could force them to take more than that) As for you subsidising the south east . Well let m just say that even if you do you don't by much so even if you do leave the GB economy is not likely to collapse. the economy of the UK is about 2.7 trillion dollars. Scotland's is only 3 billion of that 2.7 trillion so even if you left the economy of the remainder of the UK would be bigger than Scotland's by 2.1 trillion as without Scotland it would still be 2.4 trillion. Also Scotland has a much worse problem with poverty than the rest of the UK and independence will not likely change that. Indeed there is no guarantee that Scotland would get all the oil as I will elaborate if you wish.

    Scotland will be in great difficultly when it is not part of UK and the EU. EU clearly said they will need to reapply and get all the EU members to vote yes. Spain will not vote yes as they will want to make an example of Scotland. If they make it hard as possible for Scotland then it will help them keep their country together. If they make it easy for Scotland then Catalan will be empowered and will go for independence even more. The Scots say that independence doesn't effect Spain but it does as Catalan will look at Scotland as an example of success or failure.

      ***** you are the stupid one. If you watch the news then you would know that Spain's Current Government already said they will Vito Scotland from joining the EU. The head of the EU few weeks ago said clearly some countries like Spain will most likely Vito Scotland from joining to EU. So it will be really hard or impossible for Scotland to join. This was said by the head of the EU (no me). Watch the news before you comment. I made my comment as I do watch the news. Spain would rather have their country together in one piece than care about fishing rights. Spain knows an independent Scotland will be bad for their country as it will be much harder to control Catalan. That is why they will have to make it hard. I am giving facts so what are you giving.

And Scotland would except and be bound by the E.U. Courts and treaties on thing's like health & safety and special conversion areas ect?

  • @swissnor
    @swissnor Před 10 lety

    An independent Scotland could become become an associate member of the E.U. but not use the Euro and join also join the join the Nordic Council and the Council of Europe, the European Free Trade Association and the the European Economic Area as well. that way an independent Scotland would get the best of both Worlds.
    1. An independent Scotland would have a lender of last resort by becoming an associate member of the E.U. but not use the Euro.
    2. An independent Scotland would have access to E.U. markets to sell it's products.
    3. An independent Scotland would be able to attract investment by other European, American and Canadian firms because of Scotland links to the E.U..
    4. Because an independent Scotland would have it's own currency, but have the backing of the E.U. international firms would see Scotland as a stable place to locate there business.
    5. If the Euro was not doing well an independent Scotland would not be as badly effected as other countries that use the Euro and as a result an independent Scotland would be better able to weather an economic storm. 6. Because an independent Scotland would also be a member of the Nordic Council and the Council of Europe, the European Free Trade Association and the the European Economic Area as well an independent Scotland would have a "special relationship" with other Nordic countries an independent Scotland would have a preferential treatment in terms of trading, scientific and cultural exchanges with other Nordic members it can only benefit an independents Scotland economy.
    At the next revision of E.U. treaties in 2015, a new clause could be added to establish the formal category of an associate state of the European Union. Indeed there is all ready a precedent in E.U. law for associate membership such as Greece which went on to become a full E.E.C. member and modern day Turkey which is a present day E.U.associate member. Associate membership would require fidelity to the values and principles of the Union. However, it would not require adherence to all the political objectives of the Union, which include joining the euro. Nor would associate membership confer the duty to engage in all the activities of the EU.
