    Let auld acquaintance be forgot? Since 1707, Scotland and England have been united under one crown, a relationship that has survived domestic and global crises. However, relations have frayed in recent years and support for Scottish Independence has grown significantly, culminating in the 2014 Scottish Independence referendum. Following dramatic changes in the landscape of British and global politics, a resurgent bid for Scottish Independence has gained support. Should Westminster allow for a second referendum? Is independence a prospect worth supporting?

      Why are you so concerned about Scotland's ongoing drive for independence? Scotland's 5.5M should pose no threat to the might of the English army - unless you have a problem with us taking all of our resources with us? Now there's a thought; did you know, if we stopped supplying electricity to England Manchester would be plunged into darkness overnight? Did you know that, Clarkie? Lol

    Scottish independence could save my country. Germany. Right now, our green party secretary of economy and energy Habeck, has to beg dictatorships around the world for gas and oil. If the Scots could decide it, we would happily buy everything they can produce the next hundred years. Right next door from lovely people who value mostly the same things we do. Champagne parties in Berlin would be the consequence. Scottish economic development would be guaranteed 👌

    • @justonecornetto80
      @justonecornetto80 Před rokem +5

      Sorry old chap but an independent Scotland wouldn`t have as much oil and gas as you think it will.
      To start with, any international maritime border would likely run on a line from Berwick toward Bergen in Norway, not as the SNP would want which is a line toward Copenhagen. Natural geography and the circumference of the Earth dictate this, not a bunch of SNP lunatics! As a consequence, several major oil fields and half of the gas fields would fall within English maritime waters.
      You also have to consider the likelihood that Shetland and Orkney would become Crown Dependencies outside the jurisdiction of Scotland which would blow another huge hole in Scottish oil and gas reserves.
      There is also the inevitable scenario that in any separation negotiation, Scotland would have to concede preferential access of its energy reserves to the rest of the UK in order to remain part of the Common Travel Area. Without doing so, Scotland would have a hard border between it and more than 60% of its entire export market which is infinitely more lucrative than anything Germany could possibly offer.
      My advice to Germany is to look elsewhere.

      I hope Scotland's oil days are over, the message has finally clicked that our climate is in extreme peril and it's renewables that will power Scotland, it's neighbour and Europe. There's a new energy bonanza happening and I want Scotland to benefit this time round, for It was the only nation on earth that got poorer after oil was discovered, thanks to the Union.

    • @AzulinhoAzulinho
      @AzulinhoAzulinho Před rokem

      yes, we informed ones in the independence movement (not the idiots here trying to assert we have hardly any oil or gas) are aware that Germany in particular and the EU in general will be very thirsty for gas and oil. Scotland is currently producing about 3 times the gas it uses for no return. Production could be increased but Scotland can't possibly make up for lost Russian gas and can't even supplt Germany with enough gas. The Netherlands is the EU's #1 gas producer and would remain so were Scotland to join. When it comes to oil, Scotland does have absolutely loads of this and could increase production considerably to supply to our neighbours and friends.
      On the other hand, you live and die by your foreign policy decisions, and your country has made some horrible stinking ones recently; it is not my country's fault or problem. I do not want to join the EU, but keep it at arm's length like Norway does. You can buy our oil, sure. We can do you a nice deal, ok.

    Alex Salmond is just great, a formidable debater. I’m Scottish and agnostic on independence and agnostic on the union. The Scots, whether they support independence or not, have demonstrated that they can be a strong nation without a state. The British on the other hand seem to derive their nation solely from having a state exercising its power over individual free will. The latter is exceptionally unhealthy ideology. But it also shows the utterly weak foundations of Britishness that it couldn’t survive the end of the United Kingdom and needs a state to reinforce it.

      Also "Scottish don't need a state" except Scotland has held a special administrative position within the UK and previously Great Britain since the Union in 1707. Seperate legal and educational system, amongst other things.
      As a non-Scot who has lived in Scotland, it's actually hilarious how self-referential Scotland is. You get a bit of this everywhere, "Full English Breakfast" etc, but in Scotland it is turned up to 11. You're going to sit there, straight faced and tell me that 12 years of a *checks notes* NATIONALIST government had no influence on that? - but yeah, sure there is absolutely no government or state supporting Scottish identity. Well, asides from the avowedly and outspokenly Scottish nationalist Scottish government. lol, lmao even.

      @@guntguardian3771 I’ll ignore the diatribe which detracts from your point. But you’ve eloquently made my own point for me. Yes, Scots are British. But that is only a legality because the constructed British state exercises its free will over people to make that law and construct a British identity. The Scots have never needed a political entity to exercise its free will over them and define what their national identity is for them and that is much healthier. It seems to me that it is a source of annoyance to many that Scotland is not just some kind of northern Yorkshire.

Besides that point the North West Coast of Scotland or between there and I believe Greenland would be wide open for the Russian subs to access all the way to USA and this would jeopardise UK position as a member of NATO. This is the real reason, the weapons for servicing have to be moved at huge security issues, safety, cost by roads from Scotland to the south coast I believe Portsmouth or around this area and after shipped all the way back to the sub bases by road. Or where in England want them, Wales don't, NI is impractical and a bigger vote than Brexit would entail

    Why say countries independent from London not the UK, that is talking over Scotland, and that is the worst aspect of the SNP or any nationalist movement, it wants to dictate to everyone, and it is the reason why UK fought WWII, and AB Cunningham and other Scots fought for the better world we live in today.
    The Irish Senate responded to NS that partition of Britain was a good thing, but it seems that partition of Ireland is the good thing and Scotland will not want to end up the way Irish nationalism is, divided and tyrannical, and a propaganda addict.
    Call a halt to the divided world, and when peace reigns then begin to talk independence, because only then will the dreams come true. It is the divided world that threatens the planet, because the economic rivalry is on top. Scotlands economy like the Irish economy generated independence objectives, nothing more, all is money and saying London only makes sense in those terms.

    I am neither Scottish nor English, nonetheless, since the union wasn't forced on either side, and was mutually agreed upon, it's fair to ask who does Scotland want to gain independence from?
    Instead, it should be more of a separation than an independence. Likewise, if there was no clause stating if, and the manor of separation, then, it's worthwhile if perhaps a clause of separation (if the Union is ever to be broken) be put on referendum first.
    Secondly, since the Scottish king took up both kingdoms at the beginning of the Union, it's fair to say, the Scots have gained more from the Union than the English.

      The Union was agreed in Scotland by a group of Nobles who were offered money and land. They had to retreat to a toilet to sign it because the people were rioting. The Scots rioted in the streets for over 6 weeks. They were so against a Union with England. Get your facts straight!

Scotland and their king also took on the English throne, King James I (or James III, depending on where you are from) requested the union with England, of whom, were very much against this. Scottish dynasty brought about the union and nobody else, this was not achieved by subsuming both thrones (Act of Union, 1707) as the original ruler died and his grand children followed his wishes.
      Scottish monarchs wanted the union because their failed colonisation attempts made them vulnerable to larger nations (Catholic France) and left them bankrupted. Scotland always tried to sweep this part of their history under the rug.

      @@jacobcohen9205 lets clear some inaccuracies in your comment shall we:
      there NEVER was a British Empire as an official entity - there was the United Kingdom and then its colonies, there was never an official empire or emperor. So to say it doesn't exist anymore is not a statement of fact but an opinion. With several crown dependencies and overseas territories across I believe 5 continents, I'd say its reasonable to say that the British Empire does still exist albeit in a much less significant state. You call the EU an empire while seemingly oblivious to the irony of your comments.
      "The Scots asked to become part of the United Kingdom, but they were not forced to." - completely incorrect. When James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne he started efforts to integrate the two countries politically. Later, the Darian scheme failed in no small part due to the English government and East India Company efforts via trade blockades and forcing 3rd party investors to withdraw - due to its own interests. The financial disaster as a result pushed the debt laden ruling class towards English aid - in return for them supporting the integration and establishment of the union. This was against the wishes of the common Scot and there was a number of protests and riots in response. So for you to say Scots asked to join the union is a pitiful reimagining of history. Anyway, that is history - but I thought it pertinent to point it out given you're assertion that others should "have a clue of what they speak".
      As for the referendum - a swing of less than 200k votes would give a different outcome, hardly the clear cut majority that you think it was. This in spite of the self titled "project fear", with the threat that we would be out of the EU (lol!), that somehow we wouldn't be able to use our own currency (a free floating internationally traded currency lol!), complete media support for the union and the clear political gymnastics and wrangling around established rules. The most egregious of the latter was the so called 'Vow' which was clearly against the nature of the rules on campaigning in the days before the vote (no published materials were to be issued in this time) - which they got around by stating that the Vow was made not by the UK Government or Better Together but by the heads of the UK political parties. Give me a break! And in any event - the vow has proven to be a joke.
      Don't get me wrong, there are valid arguments for either side and independence wouldn't be all sunshine and roses and we would have challenges to overcome - but it would be within Scotland's own power to overcome them. By all means, continue to support the union - but don't spout nonsense in CZcams comments attacking others from a place of ignorance.

      @@ClaimOfRightMuso Salmond does not interest me in particular, more the nationalist group as a whole. Salmond is yesterday's man in political terms, comprehensively destroyed and reduced to leading a derided and electoral insignificant fringe party by nationalist infighting. I am just enjoying the whole shitshow within the nationalist movement as it tears itself apart. Hopefully Youssless will get in and accelerate the decline even faster but even if its Forbes, well, she is a tartan tory. Let's see how that plays with the ex labour vote that the SNP relied on to get to where they are today.

      10% margin is not overwhelming at all. Remaining in the EU was more popular than remaining in the UK and look at all the good that has done us.

      Why is nothing ever said about the comments made by the Queen and the vow right before the vote when they realised the majority were in favour. Then they didn't keep their vow, they dragged us out of Europe and this link you'll see below proves that there was shady things going on. If this was seen anywhere else there would have been an uproar but because Scotland doesn't have a great big platform we can't make a fuss about it.
      Regardless, circumstances have clearly changed and we have the right to vote again. England has got to make its mind up, either Scotland costs you money and you would be better off without us or London is a thiefdom and benefits from us, not just Scotland, NI, Wales and England too, London is its own thing they do not care about anyone in the UK. Just look at London compared to the rest of the UK.
      This to me proves the whole thing was a farce in 2014.

      The Scots voted for independence at 54%. It was the English population of Scotland more than any other that blew it, voting 3 to 1 against independence like absolute fearful idiots. Hundreds of thousands of them mate.
