DIY Bamboo Flute (Simple and free)

  • Today I'll be making a simple bamboo flute with some bamboo I was able to find in the wild. This was very easy and only took about an hour or 2. I should have waited for the bamboo to dry out first, but it still worked out pretty well. The trickiest part is the reed, you might have to play around with it until you get the sound you want, but just make sure the end of it stops at the start of the carved whistle hole. Leave a comment if you have any questions about the build!

    Age the bamboo for 6mths so the wood is brown. Green wood is likely to crack.. :)

      @@jesuscristo2793 I saw that tip when I was researching flutes, but that was 2yrs ago and I can't remember much about it. If you're testing your technique you don't have much to lose, but if you make a good one, I think you might regret not aging the wood.. 🙂

    is it necessary to dry out the bamboo or can i cut it down and use it right away?

    • @kingskraft2656
      @kingskraft2656  Před 2 lety +1

      I cut it down and used it right away, but I was advised by a viewer it's better to let it dry. Either way, my flute still works today so I am not sure it makes a huge difference. Maybe try making one both ways and see if there is any difference.

    • @larrent5863
      @larrent5863 Před rokem +1

      When using things like wood or bamboo to make instruments its best to let it dry. If you use fresh cuttings the material is still bendable, and has the potential to rot if not taken care of properly. When the material does eventually dry out it can constrict on the inner diameter of the instrument causing the tuning to change from when you made it.

    • @larrent5863
      @larrent5863 Před rokem

      Bamboo is also likely to crack if you don't age it.

    I tried making but I can't make the reed right

    • @kingskraft2656
      @kingskraft2656  Před 2 lety +1

      The reed is the most difficult part of this. It is very temperamental. It needs to be a cylindrical piece of wood the same diameter as the inside of the bamboo and should be the length from the end of the bamboo to the first notch cut. All you need to change is to flatten a side of it slightly so air can pass through. This flattened side faces up. I am not sure how else I can be of help, so good luck, I hope it works out!

    • @kingskraft2656
      @kingskraft2656  Před 2 lety

      I was lucky and knew someone who had it growing on their property, but bamboo grows all over the place, I see it on sides of roads everywhere where I'm from. Besides finding it for free, you can also get it relatively cheap from craft stores or hardware stores in most cases.

    Now how to tune it lol

    • @larrent5863
      @larrent5863 Před rokem

      You take out a tuner and some wood carving tools. Take little bits off of the holes until it reaches the desired note. However, be warned that if you take too much off your fingers may not seal it properly. If that occurs you have to start over. If you use the same length take a little more off the end of the flute as this can change the tuning as well.

    • @larrent5863
      @larrent5863 Před rokem

      There are also charts you can look up for the spacing of the holes if you want it tuned easier. The flute he made is not an easy one to tune. Tuning can be a complex process and daunting if your new to instrument making.

      @kingskraft2656  Před 2 lety

      It is hard for me to say exactly why yours isn't working properly without seeing it, but the most likely cause that I ran into also is the wooden reed piece that is inserted in the top not being in the right place. It needs to be fitted in a precise way. To avoid moving it around too much, once I got mine in place I glued it in.

    Basic ways to make the sound. Don’t waste time to teach others on cutting n sawing parts . The main part is the the mouthpiece where u blow n it make sound. The rest is different need more precision to adjust the keys.

    Thank you, unfortunately you blew it (pun intended) When you began to drill the holes. There is a whole set of rather complicated mathematically pleasious that must be complicated so that your flute is both in tune with concert pitch as well as being in tune with itself. And you can hear it when you play at the very end. That flute might be fun for a kid to play, but it’s not gonna be in pitch when other people try to play together .

    • @kingskraft2656
      @kingskraft2656  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for the input! I am aware that its not in perfect pitch. The intent of most of my videos is to provide an easy, budget way to make certain projects. The calculations needed to get it in perfect tune are just too complicated for the sake of this channel. Its most definitely not intended for playing concerts. But ill take that into account for future projects!
