I think it also depends what kind of R&B type someone would like to produce in order to use the right bass sounds.
What I personally like with 808's are that they bring that contrast between a soulful melody and that hard hitting low end impact to a beat.
But a nice smooth bass guitar rythm is something that I also really love, especially in a 70's type of R&B beat. 🫡

I can literally put 1000 sounds, riffs, licks, etc., in my track and it wouldn't be too much because it's my track and that's the way I decided to produce it. That same track could have too much going on if you made it and you decided it were too much. It's up to the creator to decide how he wants to express himself. Btw, I'm not a gospel musician.
