+winetaster13 True and, Evita's story reflects that of Argentinian life where her/the lower impoverished class had no hope for a better life. Her father was a landowner married to someone else. .. .. Greed and ambition ruled her , and she with Peron became the most powerful and corrupt leaders of Argentina with no plans for the future.
that's it ? , too bad Margaret Thatcher is dead, or else she could tell about how England spent 1.9 Bil$$ in the Falkland War that killed 1,000 persons using military hardware bought from her despicable ally " selling weapons for hostages and paying ransom" Ronald Reagan
I can recall seeing "Evita" at the old Shubert Theater in Century City with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin in 1981. What a stellar musical and a performance seared in my memory.
I was heartbroken her standing played the matinees, though I understood why! I did see Mandy Patankin, who was worth the price of admission, but oh, I’d have paid a fortune to have seen them both!
This was a political speech made to a working class crowd. Some pretty girls with pretty voices sing this in a very ladylike way. Nah, I don't think it was like that at all. Patti LuPone rules!
I was in college when I got the original Broadway soundtrack of Evita, with Patti and Mandy Patinkin as Che. I played it constantly. I was transfixed. I still love the show. Brilliant.
As an Argentinian, I feel that the Great Lupone made a MARVELLOUS performance of this song. Yet, It's difficult to express the really strong Evita's feelings for someone who may not know her, and her fight for the poor. HOWEVER, Patti is AMAZING and this perfomance is as amazing as her.
A voice aged to perfection.......a masterclass in singing........power, grit, growl and the haunting notes that you cant forget....a true singer.......
I ADORE Patti and her incredible voice, but can we appreciate the stylistic choice of dressing Patti in a spoof of the 1947 Bar Suit from Dior? "Christian Dior me!" taken LITERALLY! I love it!!
Extraordinarily effective, especially for those who are familiar with the Peron's history, and that of Argentina in the 40's and 50's. Patti LaPone radiates the rawness and directness of Evita's unsophisticated, rags to riches personality, and the intense pathos of her desperate appeal for recognition. All the other singers have beautiful voices but entirely miss that connection. To them its apparently just a song, not a personal appeal to be loved by the Argentine people.
So many years later, I still fel the need to write about Eva Peron and Patti LuPone. I listened to this video a million times. Mrs LuPone is the only one who is Evita. I know all the other singers who sing thi song and so totally agree with you Mr Larry: they sing, well and with heart. Mrs LuPone...with her hearth and her soul. This is the big equalizer. Dar God, she makes me crave to have known Eva Peron. This woman haunts me.
I thought the point of the song was to manipulate the crows outside the balcony using a bunch of nonsense, sentimental words that have little to do with any of it. Her immediate reaction after the song is quite telling. Perhaps they’ve softened her character over the years.
Patti LuPone's rendition of this song is still my favorite among all of the great singers who have done great performances of it! Her powerful delivery rich with emotion, espicially the chorus, IS transcendent!
Incomparable! I saw Patti Lupone's performance with the original cast on Broadway and for me she will always be the one a& only Evita! She owns this song as has from Opening Night standing ovations!
I think she has the best technique and perfected how to sing each part of the song. She is very good at controlling when to get stronger and softer like when she sings “hope you love me” at 3:00.
The musical Evita began life as an album, before ever taking form on the British stage. Julie Covington first sang Dont Cry for Me Argentina for the original 1976 studio release. The single with the Julie Covington recording reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1977 for a week, selling almost a million copies in the UK alone. It seems that I can't pick a favorite and just love listening to these talented ladies perform this very beautiful song.
Yes, I did find Patti LuPone through Steven Universe, but I think I've fallen in love with her outside of the show. I have been viewing her other work ever since I fell in love with Yellow Diamond. The moment I realized my love for the actress over the character was when I stopped hearing Yellow Diamond whenever Patti LuPone sang or spoke, and started hearing Patti LuPone in the place of Yellow Diamond.
archangelrainforest Same. I knew her briefly from the Sweeney Todd Revival (well a song I saw in a clip from the the revival that they performed at the Grammys). Then it wasn't until after I saw her in SU, I was like, ok, she's dope. But yeah, I love her work in SU and I love her work out of SU.
I was blessed to see her perform from the front of the theatre in Evita. . She riveted you to her. Such a performer you have never seen . Bravo Patti Lupone
Last year Patti and Mandy came to San Antonio and I got to see these wonderful actors sing and dance broadway favorites, including this song, and it was one the most magical moments of my life.
God, she is such a beautiful woman. We are truly blessed to have such a talented person come into our lives and play this role. She did many things before and after. And I actually did not know she did this role until recently. But my heart is most thankful for the music she did here. It’s very healing and inspiring.
She's not just singing the song but playing the part. I grew up a few homes away from the Lupones and got to listen to her sing as a kid. She stopped me cold then and still does...
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange When I try to explain how I feel That I still need your love after all that I've done You won't believe me, all you will see is a girl you once knew Although she's dressed up to the nines At sixes and sevens with you I had to let it happen, I had to change Couldn't stay all my life down at heel Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new But nothing impressed me at all I never expected it to Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is, I never left you All through my wild days, my mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance And as for fortune, and as for fame I never invited them in Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be The answer was here all the time I love you, and hope you love me Don't cry for me, Argentina Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is, I never left you All through my wild days, my mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance Have I said too much? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you But all you have to do is look at me to know That every word is true
Wow. She is such a captivating, soulful performer. I can't even imagine how many times she's sung this song, but she still sings with so much heart. WOW.
In my opinion, she did not only sing but acted as well like she was Eva Peron. Sarah was amazing but I think she her voice was a little soft. Ellen Paige did very well but Patti exuded more poise..
I absolutely adore Patti! When I saw the ads for the play on TV I knew I had to see her! In March 1980 I was pregnant with my first baby. I got tickets to a Wednesday matinee. Imagine my heartbreak when I found out, while sitting in my theater seats, that Patti didn’t sing at matinees! I loved the play anyway but never stopped longing to see Patti perform in it. The night of her last performance, which was a sell out, I literally cried at 8:00 pm knowing my chance was gone. I’m not a starry eyed, goo goo eyed fan, I just really needed to see her perform in Evita. I still mourn that I missed the chance. Patti is an amazing Broadway star and I enjoy everything she does!
I've been fortunate to see both Patti Lupone and Elaine Paige in "Evita". They are both volcanic performers and equally memorable. Can I judge one over the other?NO --
The She did the original on Broadway in NYC at the Shubert Theater. She is a great actress as well as singer even though so many great woman singers have doine renditions ! SHe truly is singing to a crowd in Argentina !!
Patti LuPone's portrayal of Eviita was the first I ever heard. There have been many others who were adequate, and even very good, very moving, but for my money she OWNS the role.
its a new challenge to be done such rendition and it is one of the best original and extraordinary rhythm.. most of the sigers nowadays are immitations from the movies.. but this? this is just amazing
I saw Patti LuPone sing this live and it was amazing!!!! They even put the golden lights on her to look like the play BUT these 2 7-8 year old girls were dragged to the show and they did the candle wave during this song which was the only one I was REALLY looking forward to hearing.... >:( It made me sad but the song is still VERY lovely!
Did anyone else notice the piano work? It filled in for the whole orchestra.
I noticed it immediately. Wonderful playing.
So did Patti
To lift your arms and have a wave of applause must be a very, very good feeling.
She is fantastic.
your holding it back...a bit shy
then calling it forward....since you're entitled...to it
so happy to be argentinian, broadway fan, and Steven Universe fan lol. I'm crying
Lol
lenny's neck sucks,,,,Madonna rules this song
lenny's neck Argentina carajo
Ja
Evita, the actual woman, was amazing. The musical doesn't do her justice.
Patti will always be the queen of this role
Yes she will one Great Taurean playing another Great Taurean Viva Evita,Viva Patti.
***** Go fuck yourself Ausie. Lots of love, from Argentina.

No one else can be Evita!
she is perfection. one of the most unique voices in theatre history. what a legend...
Some people wanted to find out who Patti Lupone is because of Steven Universe. I wanted to find out who Steven Universe is because of Patti LuPone.
oh wow same!
Don't search who she plays, it's a HUGE spoiler XD
She is a very powerful figure!
Steven Universe is a currently airing, extremely high quality cartoon on Cartoon Network.
^^^
REAAALLLY
EXTREME QUALITY
whoah that is so kewl XD

Bravo.
@@lynncibelli3534 Brava always Patti LuPone! You are the queen!!!
Would have been better if she had a full orchestra.
What a Diamond
hue
it's funny you say that because there's a song called "she's a diamond" in Evita
My diamond, even!
"I'm Argentina and always will be"
Yes Patti. You are.
The one and only Patti, She totally owns this song and always will.
EXACTLY!!!
I was in college when I got the original Broadway soundtrack of Evita, with Patti and Mandy Patinkin as Che. I played it constantly. I was transfixed. I still love the show. Brilliant.
I did too! I knew every song by heart! I could have stepped in to any role at any time and known every word! I would love to meet her before I die!
She just brought the whole show back to life in 5 minutes.
Yes😭…
As an Argentinian, I feel that the Great Lupone made a MARVELLOUS performance of this song. Yet, It's difficult to express the really strong Evita's feelings for someone who may not know her, and her fight for the poor. HOWEVER, Patti is AMAZING and this perfomance is as amazing as her.

Been watching ALL versions of this song and Patti slays it. Love it!
Try to watch nicole scherzinger 😄
Juna Mangiliman not good enough
True. Patti is inimitable.
Robert Hardman i think nicole's version is better
Dulce Tovar Nicole Scherzinger is AMAZING, the whole package!!
I ADORE Patti and her incredible voice, but can we appreciate the stylistic choice of dressing Patti in a spoof of the 1947 Bar Suit from Dior? "Christian Dior me!" taken LITERALLY! I love it!!

I couldn't agree with you more Larry.
+Larry Slone When Evita died thousands of Argentinians went to Rome and demanded that Evita be declared a Saint of the Roman atholic Church.
+David OBrien ??Your point being, I presume, that she had such a powerful effect on many Argentines that they wanted to canonize her?
So many years later, I still fel the need to write about Eva Peron and Patti LuPone. I listened to this video a million times. Mrs LuPone is the only one who is Evita. Nobody does this song quite like her. So incredibly moving.
Y'all....she's singing this while giggly corseted. Holy fuck
Years have done nothing to this woman...if anything, she just keeps getting better and better...such a class act...luv her dearly 🤗
Incomparable! I saw Patti Lupone's performance with the original cast on Broadway and for me she will always be the one a& only Evita! She owns this song as has from Opening Night standing ovations!
Don't cry for me, Homeworld.
omg
James Mendez Hodes 😂
no lie, i'm totally going to draw an animatic to this. thanks for the idea!!
I came here to find out what's the use of feeling blue
James Mendez Hodes LMAO
No one can equal Patti Lupone when she performs THIS song!! It's truly a classic
She captures not only the vocals but the character. She becomes Evita Peron. LuPone is very talented.
i get a visceral feeling with chills & tears whenever i hear her sing this song. just beautiful.
Nobody can sing this or play this role as well as Patti can! ❤️
I loved it over 30yrs ago and still today.. beautiful!!
Wow, that outfit is so diva-licious. I mean that in a good way.
2018 Grammys.....she is the performance of the night.....easy.....fabulous.
I think she has the best technique and perfected how to sing each part of the song. She is very good at controlling when to get stronger and softer like when she sings “hope you love me” at 3:00.

Patti Lupone singing + Deedee Magno Hall singing = LITERALLY THE GREATEST FREAKING DUO EVER
Do you hear that? The collective sounds of people's minds blowing
Kenna M Gibbons boi have u guys heard the new song from the latest Steven bomb?!
Shaza Maza Who sounds terrible? Deedee Magno Hall or Patti LuPone?
Both sing beautiful.
What about Estelle?

Patti la pone is the most incredible singer! Her range and stage presence is unsurpassable! love her!
WOW, what a wonderful voice!
I just came back from seeing her sing this at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. It brought me to tears. She's so amazing.
Patti LuPone is nothing less than an American treasure.
I was blessed to see her perform from the front of the theatre in Evita. . She riveted you to her. Such a performer you have never seen . Bravo Patti Lupone
Marvelous voice, love her take on it so much.
Patti is truly brilliant. She made a great evita.I love this version so much.
Last year Patti and Mandy came to San Antonio and I got to see these wonderful actors sing and dance broadway favorites, including this song, and it was one the most magical moments of my life.
Her face tells a great story… THAT is real talent. Telling the story without any words…
This queen will never stop slaying 💜
Patti Lupone is the Gold Standard for Evita. She not only is a brilliant vocalist but she inhabits the character.
So proud of you, my diamond!
Mateus Matos You serve Yellow Diamond?!
Mateus Matos you are a portuguese speaking
God, she is such a beautiful woman. We are truly blessed to have such a talented person come into our lives and play this role. She did many things before and after. And I actually did not know she did this role until recently. But my heart is most thankful for the music she did here. It’s very healing and inspiring.
Goosebumps. Patty owns the stage!
Patti achieves moving expression with precise phrasing, convincing emotion, and exuberant modulation. Her voice is impeccable.
She's not just singing the song but playing the part. I grew up a few homes away from the Lupones and got to listen to her sing as a kid. She stopped me cold then and still does...
YELLOW DIAMOND !!!
that pianist!!
TBH you can really hear yellow diamond 😍
eisa alaskar YES
Saw her in the original Evita 1979 Broadway. She is EVITA!
Saw Evita in Chicago with Patti Lupone, loved it.
I was in Argentina when Madonna was filming Evita.
Actually made me weep
You're not the only one
This is the first time I have heard this version of this song and I love it. Never knew she could sing like this. I am really impressed.
Patti LuPone is wonderful!! No one can compare with her! I had the privilege of seeing Evita on Broadway many years ago, she was magnificent!
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me, all you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom, running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you, and hope you love me
Don't cry for me, Argentina
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is, I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true
Ezra Al Barra I saw this the exact moment she started singing
ive come for the steven universe comments
ive also watched a bunch of patti lupons videos, my god what a beautiful woman
She will always own this role...amazing.
Bravo LuPone. Saw you are Broadway, three times.
Standing ovation every time she sings that. Must never get old no matter how much she disliked it. Impeccable.
Wow. She is such a captivating, soulful performer. I can't even imagine how many times she's sung this song, but she still sings with so much heart.
WOW.
PATTY LuPONE I AM VERY HUMBLE BY YOUR WORDS AND SINGS MAGNIFICENT THANKYOU KINDLY BERNADETTE
I saw her on the same tour when she performed in San Diego. She is amazing.
In my opinion, she did not only sing but acted as well like she was Eva Peron. Sarah was amazing but I think she her voice was a little soft. Ellen Paige did very well but Patti exuded more poise..
This performance changed my life!

I love this version. I saw Patti Lupone in Evita here in Los Angeles and she was amazing! She is Evita.
She sounds amazing! So much emotion and power!!
God I love her..Gives me the goosebumps everytime I listen to it
Brilliant....and that gown is everything.
I saw her perform this twice in her cabaret act at the Mohegan Sun Casino - and it was breathtaking.
Beautiful! Just Beautiful! ...
Breathtakingly beautiful! I can die now....*sigh*.

Agreed. I saw her in original show in NYC ! Was great!
I get chills every single time she sings💞
48 People clearly DO NOT understand extremely great and pure talent when it's right in front of them. NO ONE can top this voice.
My diamond!!!
Outstanding!!! Thank you Ms. LuPone!!!
Magnificent voice.
She is THE BEST of all time!
I get to see her on Saturday, and I can barely contain the joy!
Patti LuPone's portrayal of Eviita was the first I ever heard. There have been many others who were adequate, and even very good, very moving, but for my money she OWNS the role.
Best Evita performance ever. Cheers. Patty. LuPone
Magnificent! I had the pleasure of seeing Patti perform. Beautiful voice.
Such an emotional song - I just love it. Very moving.
its a new challenge to be done such rendition

Magnificent!!..Brava..!!
Beautiful. Simply beautiful
Just beautiful and lovely song, I attended one of her shows at the Shubbert theater, just unforgettable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I viewed her from the balcony... but seeing and hearing Patti Lupone from anywhere in the house is magical. :)
My favorite version
I saw Patti LuPone sing this live and it was amazing!!!! They even put the golden lights on her to look like the play BUT these 2 7-8 year old girls were dragged to the show and they did the candle wave during this song which was the only one I was REALLY looking forward to hearing.... >:( It made me sad but the song is still VERY lovely!
Watching her on the Grammy's singing this right now in 2018
I was lucky enough to catch Patti Lupone in her first Broadway play -- summer of 1978. Lupone is a national treasure. Words fail me.
Absolutely spine tinglingly amazing. Nothing could possibly compare.
