Not being a Lloyd-Webber fan, I was dragged along to see Patti perform this in Sydney and I was bowled over ... she got a richly deserved standing ovation for her astonishingly good performance.
The quality of her voice and her control of it, her articulation, phrasing, timbre, and vocal acting just make her incomparable and powerful singer. And all of that comes together to perfection in this song.
I rly dont understand how people can criticize her acting abilities and say shes just over rated and gets the jobs cause shes loud. SHes clearly much more than the average actress, I cant even look away from her. She can cry on que. She is one of the greatest theatrical performers of the 20th century.
Please pay no attention to the so called critics bashing Patti. She emulates Evita totally.Lu Pone is nothing but GRAND.After all the Senora herself was sitting in the balcony at each performance and applauding the loudist. At least that was the feeling that this old ex Argentine from Bs As felt.As a young boy watching and listening to the Senora speeches I hold myself as a good judge when I say,Patty, you've got HER spirit all the way.VIVA PATTI and of course always VIVA EVITA.
One of the things I love about the way she sings this song is the phrasing.......she owns this song forever ! I was fortunate enough to see the show with the original NYC cast in 1979....it made me cry.
I saw Patti perform this in the original Broadway production. She was magnificent !!! Her voice and the feeling she puts into all of the songs gives me the chills every time I hear them. BRAVO !!!
I agree, those commercials compelled to buy the soundtrack, which I listened to repeatedly! Fascinating story, the real and what was presented on stage!
I've had a crush on Patti for decades and listen to Evita often. A week ago, I returned from a four month motorcycle journey from the USA to the bottom of Argentina, then to Buenos Aires where I visited places mentioned in the musical. Argentina is a vast and beautiful country with amazingly kind people. If Patti embodied Eva Peron, I can see why she would have been beloved there, despite her politics.
I have always thought that Patti LuPone was the True Evita (Musical version)---The British version is tragic. I remember the commercials -back in the day-and it was always Patti LuPone! She will always be my Evita!
Years ago, another young, beautiful actress was given the chance to sing the "torch song" in an earlier musical and we know that, to this day, Yvonne OWNS "I Don't Know How To Love Him." Patti will own this song forever because no one has, or ever will come close to the soul and compassion she has given to her role as "Evita."
@MrMusicstone I have only just discovered her on youtube. I thinks she's phenomenal a force of nature and oh so talented and sensitive to her material and audiences. Johnx
@fontenayperi I completely overlooked 1978 when Elaine did it. I know Patti was in the original broadway performance in 1979, but I forgot about the former. You're right, but I still think Patti's version is by far the best, even if she didn't like the role.
@Santoslovesglee I heard Patti sing this in concert last weekend, and she is still divine! Her vocal quality was amazing. The audience gave her a very long and well deserved standing ovation.
Broadway is inundated with thin "pop" voices and American Idol contestants; glorified karaoke singers who have no place on the Great White Way. When will we get another powerhouse like this woman and what is she doing next?
thanks for trying to set the scene...but this was at the Stardust. besides, the famous Elvis showroom at the Hilton was torn apart and redone to accomodate Starlight Express back in the early 90's perfect show for Vegas, saw it several times there...thanks for the input
She does this song the best. The fact that she was the original just makes it so much greater. I've listened to many versions and this takes the cake. Elaine Paige's version is annoying, just sayin'
I know people are not gonna like what I have to say she has should have done the soundtrack and Madonna just played the part. Madonna would’ve got the Oscar. And Patty. The recognition she so deserves
hell ethel was the same and she was a star in 30s she said just open you r mouth and make the blcony to hear. love patti. a true star doesnt need a mike.
Just for a location vibe----It looks like she was at the Las Vegas Hilton. Now it's called the LVH but can't mistake that room. Elvis played there a few years earlier. And Barry Manilow just left it.
The President's wife is making a speech from the balcony of the Presidential Palace, pleading for the support of the working class crowd/mob gathered below. Maybe the sound system back in 1950 wasn't the best. So she GESTURED with outstretched arms to reach out to those in the back.
Far better than Madonna or all others that tried this famous song (by Andrew Lloyd Webber)! :D I still wonder how this song would sound when Jennifer Rush will perform it?
She can cry on que? That is not a compliment for an actor or singer. She connects with this song. It makes her emotional. Crying on que would make it fake. There are plenty of people who can cry on que but can't emote. I agree with your statements about people saying that she is over rated and that she only gets jobs because she's loud. But your statement was an insult.
With a song as powerful as this it all comes down to the vocal. The result is that a person not appreciating the vocal's style of singing won't find the song that special. Personally i think she sings way too hysterical, it ruins it completely for me. I prefer Elaine Paige's version over Patti Lupone's by far. Even if i didn't compare the two i wouldn't find Lupone's version appealing at all. but as i said it is really a matter of personal taste

I always remembered Patti Lupone's beautiful rendition of this song and NEVER forgot it. I'm sure she knows she OWNS this song. BRAVO!
I rly dont understand how people can criticize her acting abilities and say shes just over rated and gets the jobs cause shes loud. SHes clearly much more than the average actress, I cant even look away from her. She can cry on que. She is one of the greatest theatrical performers of the 20th century.
She is really crying. Incredible performance.
i realize I'm quite off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online?
Please pay no attention to the so called critics bashing Patti. She emulates Evita totally.Lu Pone is nothing but GRAND.After all the Senora herself was sitting in the balcony at each performance and applauding the loudist. At least that was the feeling that this old ex Argentine from Bs As felt.As a young boy watching and listening to the Senora speeches I hold myself as a good judge when I say,Patty, you've got HER spirit all the way.VIVA PATTI and of course always VIVA EVITA.
Absolutely flawless. She is the only person who had me speechless when I met her..
She. Is. A. Goddess. Say what you may about her, LaLuPone is a true artist. A powerhouse of performance electricity and raw humanity.
One of the things I love about the way she sings this song is the phrasing.......she owns this song forever ! I was fortunate enough to see the show with the original NYC cast in 1979....it made me cry.
Truly one of the most beautiful performers of all time. I cried when I saw her in Gypsy and I cried whenever I see her perform this song:)
I saw Patti perform this in the original Broadway production. She was magnificent !!! Her voice and the feeling she puts into all of the songs gives me the chills every time I hear them. BRAVO !!!
First time seeing this. How awesome and sung from the heart. I will take her any day over Madonna. I love this song.
Agreed!
Agreed 100 percent!
They should have put her in the movie!
The one and only EVITA!!!
Damn when she breaks that tear she sells it! Phenominal!
Power, beauty, grace...oh, and talent A perfect woman.
I am also watching her 97 performance A night with Patti Lapone. She actually has kept her voice and she is a treat to behold. Brava patti❤️🎶🌹
I agree, those commercials compelled to buy the soundtrack, which I listened to repeatedly! Fascinating story, the real and what was presented on stage!
A True Honour and pleasure to have seen her in the Stage Production. I have and will always remember Ms LuPone's performance ! BRAVA !

Pretty much my favorite performance of this song.
pattie is amazing, beautiful voice. she is the best.
I think she is fabulous,
She is a legend!
Saw her, three times, in “Evita.” Was wonderful. Lucky me.
I have always thought that Patti LuPone was the True Evita (Musical version)---The British version is tragic. I remember the commercials -back in the day-and it was always Patti LuPone! She will always be my Evita!
She is at the top of her game here for sure.. All the guys wishing they could date her. I watched starfest back in 1983.
Years ago, another young, beautiful actress was given the chance to sing the "torch song" in an earlier musical and we know that, to this day, Yvonne OWNS "I Don't Know How To Love Him." Patti sings it the best.At the end the word TRUE is very strong witch sends the message.God please ya Evita.Oh I'm sorry.I mean Patti.
FREAKING BEAUTIFUL Patti I Love You
gorgeous
BRAVO!!! FLAWLESS!
@fontenayperi I completely overlooked 1978 when Elaine did it. I know Patti was in the original broadway performance in 1979, but I forgot about the former. You're right, but I still think Patti's version is by far the best, even if she didn't like the role.
SHE IS EVITA!!!
She is amazing!
I have heard this by many performers, never tire of it. My favorite is still Karen Carpenter.
This is an incredible clip of this wonderful actress/singer. Thank you for this....thank you Patti for being you
@Santoslovesglee I heard Patti sing this in concert last weekend, and she is still divine! Her vocal quality was amazing. The audience gave her a very long and well deserved standing ovation.
Brilliant!
que voz! increible...me caí de traste...
i had never seen this performance before. thanks so much for posting it!
There is a reason why when you hear Patti the great sing you suddenly think "Elaine who?"
Broadway is inundated with thin "pop" voices and American Idol contestants; glorified karaoke singers who have no place on the Great White Way. When will we get another powerhouse like this woman and what is she doing next?
I AM POOR BUT GOT MONEY FOR THE TICKET WHEN EVITA CAME TO MPLS WITH PATTI TOURING IN IT. YES, A WONDER. LLOYD WEBBER DOES SONGS SO SO SO.......
wow. got the chance to see her. feel lucky for that
thanks for trying to set the scene...but this was at the Stardust. besides, the famous Elvis showroom at the Hilton was torn apart and redone to accomodate Starlight Express back in the early 90's perfect show for Vegas, saw it several times there...thanks for the input
She has such a harsh sound to her voice. Very talented no doubt.
Patti owns this song the same way Judy Garland owned and still owns Over the Rainbow!
😭😭😭
that one dislike is Madonna
Isn't she lovely:)
Hello, Yellow Diamond.
hell ethel was the same and she was a star in 30s she said just open you r mouth and make the blcony to hear.
love patti. a true star doesnt need a mike.
Just for a location vibe----It looks like she was at the Las Vegas Hilton. Now it's called the LVH but can't mistake that room. Elvis played there a few years earlier. And Barry Manilow just left it.
Vibrato. Her neck is really doing that.
Sorry to contradict but Elaine Paige is the Evita, the original and best, the same as in Sunset Boulavard.
Beautiful performance. SO MANY OUTSTRETCHED ARM MOVES, THOUGH
The President's wife is making a speech from the balcony of the Presidential Palace, pleading for the support of the working class crowd/mob gathered below. Maybe the sound system back in 1950 wasn't the best. So she GESTURED with outstretched arms to reach out to those in the back.
A comment born of ignorance.
far from her best song but still very good
Far better than Madonna or all others that tried this famous song (by Andrew Lloyd Webber)! :D
I still wonder how this song would sound when Jennifer Rush will perform it?
Tears! #GayMansChristmas
is mrs. lupone sing english?
Patti express more emotions than Elaine
She can cry on que? That is not a compliment for an actor or singer. She connects with this song. It makes her emotional. Crying on que would make it fake. There are plenty of people who can cry on que but can't emote. I agree with your statements about people saying that she is over rated and that she only gets jobs because she's loud. One of the greatest actresses/singers ever. However, in some of the shots I think maybe she should have stayed out of the sun. Still beautiful though.
No she's not!
Oh well then--They blew up the Stardust years ago and now it is an empty dirt lot.
@Rubbertoecast i believe Elaine Paige did it first
No... It's
"God, she's a God."
Why is her throat pulsating so much? A little scary, but at least we know she isn't lipsynching. Also, SHE LOOKS GORGEOUS!!!!!
ugh but that lacroix is so so so bad...
I don't like the phrasing
You need your ears cleaned of all that wax.
With a song as powerful as this it all comes down to the vocal. The result is that a person not appreciating the vocal's style of singing won't find the song that special.

but as i said it is really a matter of personal taste
lea salonga is better
