- 1200HP, 42PSI, 2.2L 4G63, Tilton Interiors time attack legend, redux.
After multiple lap records and back to back wins, owner, Pro-Am class driver and passionate time attack supporter Kosta Pohorukov and the infamous Tilton Interiors EVO IX V1 met an untimely end on track. While tragic, the incident that left the old chassis a write off enabled Trent Murphy of TM Automotive and others involved to use the winning formula on a new chassis and add all that extra knowledge they had learnt along the way to do it better.
The result was a keen focus on weight reduction, slight aero improvements care of Voltex Racing and after the chassis was completed by Riverside Racing, an incredible 3 month build time in order to make it to the World Time Attack Challenge before heading to Tsukuba in Japan, the home of time attack. With the car producing upwards of 3000kg of downforce, it is no surprise keeping the class spec tyres intact is an issue and an RF tyre delamination saw the team finishing the event early due to damage, but still walking away with 3rd place in the Pro Class with Garth Walden at the wheel, and 1st in Pro-Am via Kosta himself.
The EVO 9's 4G63 retains its cast block as at around 1200HP it doesn’t give them any issues producing 1200HP from a 2.2L capacity. The Emtron ECU and MoTeC PDM and dash display/logger control the engine and a myriad of sensors which ensure engine reliability as well as helping dial in aero and suspension setups to get the most out of the car. A Hollinger 6 speed sequential helps get the power to the ground and while Trent didn’t give any specific numbers, the torque split has been adjusted to ensure the car turns into corners easily, as well as maintaining traction when the noise pedal is used on the exit.
Also discussed is the new BorgWarner EFR 9280 turbo which hits a max boost of around 42PSI and 116,000RPM and its advantages over the old EFR 9180, the importance of packers, bump rubber and getting your spring rates right, using Nitrous and why the MIVEC system is retained. Also touched on is the difficulty of reducing weight when so much strength is needed to handle downforce with the tradeoff being the weight is placed as low as possible to improve handling.
2019 WTAC Event Results:
Pro Class 3rd Place | Garth Walden 1:23.856
Pro-Am Class 1st Place | Kosta Pohorukov 1:26.3240

4g63 - absolutely love it))
Hell of an engine eh! - Taz.

Beautiful car, great interview
Tilton Interiors Evo Version2.0 is all about Total Domination! I cant wait to see it perform at Tsukuba Circuit 😎
Can't wait to see it in person, loved watching version 1
I like the in depth look of the car while you're talking. lots of video of the car and the engine bay as well as whatever you can get a look so we can see that while you are talking. Great job! thanks!
Cheers Michael! A lot of the teams at WTAC are really accommodating to allow our camera man to get get a few mins with the car while they are working away on it too. It's not always easy during a busy race weekend, and sometimes we can't do that, so we really appreciate it when it happens and of course, it means you get to see more of it too =D - Taz.
Mental car. Definitely want to make it to WTAC this year, fingers crossed the thing is 100% dialled by then!
Great video guys! Really wish they would have shown more of the rear half of the evo and talked about what they did back there with all the bar work. Also is that an Inconel tubular Manifold? Definitely more questions to be asked about this beast of an evo
3 tons of downforce!!
- How much downforce?
- Yes.
When you realise that's half of what a F1 car makes it's actually fucking mind blowing
@@NippyMoto agreed. Tires rated for wut?!!
That's awesome to get an insight in this legendary time attack beast.Hopefully you get an insight in Escort shop supported Evo 9,driven by Yoshiki Ando a.k.a. Fire Ando, another superfast Evo.
Great report as usual.
What a great interview. Someone asking the right questions for a change not the normal bull-crap like on TV.
This thing is a serious weapon!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Awesome rundown as usual! Bit of a gloss over on the nitrous setup there though !? Shifty topic or can we hear more about how the nitrous is scheduled?
11:12 - Hoonigan crew photobomb.
The fucking alternator running off that driveshaft is sickkk.
Just 3ton of downforce...😟😮😯😲🤯
If there is that kind of downforce pretty sure its for time attack
Very, very mice motor car!
The advantage of all the montitoring is even if you aren't using it immediately, it can be referred back to later as one learns more about it.
thumbs up to the guy with the noriyaro shirt :D
Only this car and (version 1&2) and the Sun Auto Evo give me the feels
Disappointed he didn’t share anything about the motor configuration, Andre had to keep nudging to get him to confirm 2.2L. Clearly anything but “pretty standard” as you don’t see a lot of built 4G63 on the street with more than 500hp, so more than double that has something pretty special going on 😄
Tilton evo V1 ran a cosworth 2.2l that was "sierra sierra" spec. They have done something different with their head sealing though, as that car used to blow head gaskets a bit.
N8_B SSE Evo moved on from headgaskets to some other kind of sealing (WRC Tech) I forget what it’s called bit Andre has talked about it before. I’m sure that’s what these guys are using.
No secrets what is done. Mostly likely makes all the power up top to save the block from cracking unlike a drag tune and a half concrete fill
G A I’m sure you are correct, definitely more wear in a different fashion revving a motor out to 8500-9000 rpm instead of just say 7200rpm
not sure where you live but here in the states plenty of evos running big hp on the street. i'm taking about 800whp+ street cars
0:11 - Kosta crashed but let's not leave out HE WON, 1.24.63 (yes Andre you've now got me watching WTAC).
2:50 is that an alternator connected to the drive shaft?! What is that for?!
Am wondering the same thing.. maybe a separate one to drive the fuel pumps?
A lot of race cars have the alternator on the diff, e.g. the MG Metro 6R4. I'm not entirely sure why though. Maybe weight distribution?
more than likely they just didn't have any more room for the alternator in the standard spot.
@@Thee_Snow_Wolf I'm sure plenty do.. But is a long way for power to travel back to the front for everything else. In a application demanding so much current for fuel pumps it would make sense to have one just for the pumps.. there is also a 2nd belt down there.. not sure if it's for the alternator to bring the drive speed back up closer to engine speed after the gearbox or for something else..
@@nolanjudkins7151 I find this hard to imagine. I've seen Rallycross cars with more crowded engine bays, although those all have them on the engine.
Amazing car, anyone know what wheels they run?
No bs trento. They way all mechanics should be
@High Performance Academy is there conrete in the block? half filled?
I was hoping there would be questions about alternator running off driveshaft
Cleans up the engine bay abit and helps with weight distribution by running it off the driveshaft at the back
Cannot believe that it is still using a OEM cast block! Lots to be gained with billet!
Yes there could be, but at the same time if the setup is doing what they need for now then change for the sake of change isn't always helpful. That said Andre didn't question too deeply on the pros and cons as if a reduced weight was the biggest goal for V2 then Trent must have a really solid list of reasons for not making the change to billet at this stage - Taz.
@@hpa101 it was also noted by them on the weekend that weight balance matters very little as the aero balance outweighs it so significantly. Perhaps part of the argument to stay cast. Its always comforting to see guys like this running so many stock parts. I'm making around 500whp in my mirage and as you know with racing, power is nothing without reliability.
lots to be gained but might not be be useable, gotta watch the crash into the wall, they can't even run it at full power now. thus it would seem their wins are coming with the power dialed back. granted it's not "sexy" but those in Endurance racing for example view reliability as a "performance metric" equal to any other.
It's a Mitsubishi and it's called 4g63!!!!
Would love to learn/see more of the tube work and chassis set up on this car. A world class Evo racecar. Factory GT race team levels of craftsmanship. I haven’t been following the channel lately and I’m glad I checked in on it cause you have some great new content, this video, Benz DTM cars and Audi GTO. 😱 some of my all time favorites with great in depth technical details
Cheers Austin, we'll see what we can do.
We got a great mix of vehicles from the Goodwood Festival of Speed eh! There is an insane amount of info hiding around the channel now - Taz.
1200hp on stock block? is it really stock? stock factory crankshaft, rods and pistons?
Yes block is factory Mitsubishi ,but It has aftermarket pistons, rods & stroker crankshaft
He said stock block he never said stock factory crankshaft, rods and Pistons, can you hear anything that was said?
May I know what is packers?
shazzy
" its new, i've been using it for years and years now" busted
Timestamp please, remembering this in case it has context to what you're referencing: 0:12 - Taz.
Lancer is quite high.
They should lower the roof line by 10, 15 cm.
Better aero, lower weight, lower CG.
❤Mitsubishi ❤
❤4G63❤
1200hp is not going to happen from a 73mm exhaust wheel with turbo only.
Alectronics!
