I have the shortest attention span so I appreciate how fast and information packed this video is 😫. I thought I had bought bad skates but now I know how to adjust them. thx so much!
Adjusting skates correctly can make a huge difference. Happy rolling 🛼
Pro-tip. You can change the speed of the video. It always helps me stay focused!
Yes! The wheels! I’ve had that problem where I’d tighten them and they still wiggle about! Thanks so much for the solution
Glad the video helped. x
This was extremely helpful, nowhere was telling me how tight/loose they should actually be so thank you! ❤
So glad the video helped answer your question 💕😎⭐️🤩
I just got new skates. It has been a while since ive been, but i knew the wheels seemed too quick and hard to control (i actually fell in front of neighbors). This helped me figure out how to fix the loose wheels!
THANK YOU. I really appreciate how you just really jumped into the video and started teaching
Thank you. I try to get on with it. 😉
I just want to say, I'm a beginner in my mid-thirties and today I had the first session with my first pair of roller skates -- I loved it! I did my first bubbles and fell twice (my pads are awesome!). This was the first skating video of yours I watched (while waiting for my skates in the mail) and have been hooked on your channel ever since. Thank you for your positivity, happiness (with some much needed silliness), and helpful process/supportive attitude. Love the content... keep it coming!
Thank you so much xx. So glad you’re enjoying your skating. Keep rolling! 👍🛼⭐️💕
Left to loosy right to tighty. You are brilliant! 😊
😂⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much for this video. Just got my first pair of roller skates, the wheels and trucks were super tight.🙂
Oh fab. Glad it helped.
I find your videos so helpful. It’s clear you know what you are talking about and thanks for the info.
Thank you ⭐️⭐️⭐️🤩💕🛼
Awesome details and clear view again. Keep up the good work 😃 Thank you Katie!
Thank you. x
Thank you, Katie! Lots of great tips for skate adjustments and safety. Much appreciated!

Very straight, to the point and organized. Thank you :)
Thank you ⭐️🤩
Katie and your channel is Named Skatie... 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾 That is so hard I Love that title.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I so appreciate that you gave the angle for setting toe stops! I keeping finding people saying about 4 fingers high...but that seemed arbitrary since everyone has different sized fingers! Setting my toe stops was difficult with my skinny fingers lol
I agree. I think the angle makes things much easier. You may find you like them higher or lower or not at all as you get used to skating but it’s a good starting point xx
This information is gold. Thanks for making the video!
Thank you 😎🤩🔧
thank you sooo much my roller skate was like the green roller skate one thx it worked I LOVE YOU!!
Thank you so much! This video helped me a lot.
Thank you. I’m really glad this helped. Having your skates adjusted correctly can really help progress your skills quicker xx Happy Rolling!
Thank you Katie ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! Very clear explanation and to the point!
Thank you. 🛼⭐️💕
Thank you! Your video is clear and concise.
⭐️⭐️
thank you so much! I’ve recently bought new roller skates and for some reason they were so stiff, i couldn’t even turn without walking😭 BUT i loosened the trucks and i skate so much smoother!
That’s fantastic! They often arrive super-tight from the factory, glad that this solved your problem. 💕🛼😀
I have the same issue! I haven't loosened them yet but you did help me find out my issue more easily :)
Huge Thanks Katie Skatie💜🥰 Di Newcastle NSW Australia 🇦🇺

Thank you, just what I needed!
Glad it helped 💕🤩😎
Glad I came across this video. I just order some skate and when I first rolled around the wheels felt stiff and was wondering on how to make adjustments
So glad it helped. Have fun skating
I got it.
Thanks again and again.
💕👍🛼
I just got my skates today and the wheels WOULD NOT ROLL!! Unless I was actively rolling them with my hands, and even then it was iffy. I adjusted them and now I am cruising!! (The best my newbie self can do lol)
Fantastic, well done for checking. It will make a huge difference to your skating. Have lots of fun learning. 🛼⭐️💕

Thanks so much for your videos! Can I ask what size spanner you need for the locking nut at the bottom? Thanks!
Hi. 9/16 inch (1.42 cm) nut for King Pin.
tbh for my trucks I have them to where I can bend them with my hands side to side but if I have then any tighter I wouldn't be able to turn properly it really comes down to the skate type and truck type I believe
100% each skate may differ and everyone likes a different setup. I just give the general tips and tricks that work for the majority of skates and skaters. I have my trucks pretty loose but for a beginner they may struggle to control a loose truck until they have gained muscle for stability. Sounds like you’ve got it sorted xx 👍🛼
Hi Katie! Can you do a video about the tools and explain their uses too? Would really appreciate that!
Hi, that’s a great idea. Some skaters like to use a Y tool so that you have all the spanners and everything you need in one easily-accessible tool. 🛼💕
Another great video for us beginners Katie thank you so much. Where can I buy white or neutral toes stops for my rookie artistic skates pls also where do u buy washers and nuts pls 8mm iv got some from the DIY but the nuts are longer in length
Thanks so much x
It’s best to get skate specific nuts as they have a locking function for safety. I’ll post some links for you.
@@Skatie thank you katie
Do you know where I could find a tool that adjusts wheels trucks and a toe stop that’s on rookie artistic skates because it uses more of a spanner type thing to adjust the toe stop and I’m not sure of the size
15/16" - 24mm : Open wrench allows you to adjust the toe stop nut. Hope that helps xx Rookie do sell a 4 in 1 specific tool to fit the skates. Happy Rolling x
Hello! I just got a Chaya Melrose Elite skates and I can't seem to loosen the trucks. It doesn't budge when I use my TTool so I dont know if I need other tools for that and what size this is. If that's the case, how to know what size wrench I need for the trucks? Thank you and have a nice day!
Do you have a tool like this? amzn.to/3K9iTeC
Hi Katie ,can you help me find the size of LMNADE skate’s bolt(similar to the white and brown skates u have)as I have a variety of spanners but none seem to loosen my trucks
The LMNADE are an imperial skate so moat crab tools should fit. amzn.to/3OrrI5Y
My skate wheels are still wobbling and one of them is very close to the part that's joining them if u get what I'm saying can u do a tut on that pls
I have a couple of videos on wheels that might help.
Hi, I just got my skates and want to loosen my wheels a bit but when using the skate tool, the nut doesn’t budge! I don’t want to apply too much pressure in fear of breaking them and I’ve heard that trying to lubricate it might gunk it up. Should I just add more brute force or and I doing something wrong?
The wheel nuts can be quite tough to undo and sometimes need a bit of 'encouragement' to loosen, especially if they have been on there for a while. Make sure that you are using a tool that fits the nut securely. If you are unsure, you can always visit your local skate shop or rink who may be able to do it for you. Let me know how you get on. xx
@@Skatie I managed to loosen them, turns out I just had to be a bit braver with the force I was applying as trying a bit harder made the difference. I think because they were brand new the nuts were on super tight. Thank you for your help!
Katie Skatie Thank you ❣you went straight to the point with very helpful 🛼information 👍
Thank you xx 😎⭐️💕🛼
I have “play” in two of my wheels (each on different boot); do you know what size washer I should buy to fix this? Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I’m a novice and have no clue what I’m doing. Thanks 🙏
Depending on the plate you’ll need either an 8mm or 7mm washer. Most likely a 8mm. If you check your bearings. If they are label as 608 then you’ll need an 8mm washer. If they are labelled as 627 you’ll need a 7mm washer.
Hi Katie!! I have a question, what is the tool called that u used to adjust the trunk for the skates with the pink wheels??
Hi. It’s just a regular spanner (wrench). I tend to use either regular tools from a hardware store or roll-line skate tools.
Thank you so much. Just got mine out of the box, and they were so stiff.
Skates can take a while to break in. Make sure to wear socks that come above the boot so it doesn’t rub your ankles. Try and skate little and often. Just wearing them whilst watching tv can help to warm them up and break them in too.
Ugh I’m so confused. Trying to adjust my skates and every video I’ve watched so far has said your wheel should not be right and have a little wiggle so they can roll more freely. Now this says it should not wiggle. Don’t know what to do :(
👋 you definitely don’t want the wheel to have any up an down movement on the axel. You can tighten the wheel and then just back it off slightly to make sure it rolls freely but not so far it starts to move sideways on the axel. The nut should have a locking nylon inner ring. Make sure the end of the axel is always visible above this nylon inner ring to engage the locking system. Let me know if you need any more help x 💕🛼👍
Good day, Katie!:) I just wanted to ask if loosening your trucks increases the chance of them breaking?
It shouldn’t make a difference. If you’re loosening them to the point of them wobbling around but you’re not getting a nice skate then you might benefit from a change to a softer cushion.
Do you know what wheels I need so that I can skate at the same speed as others without working so hard to do so?
I have "All American" wheels in black.
Are you skating outside or in the rink?
The toe stop I have on my inline the one is a black toe top the topper is a bionic xs can I use another stopper tryin to get a tan one which is best for inline Jackson ?
Sorry I don’t have a lot of experience on artistic inlines. I’d suggest having a chat to a skate shop they can advise you on what will work best.
@@Skatie thanks
Hey Coach!
Coming from the world of gymnastics, dance and professional ballroom, I should have loosened my trucks from the beginning of my skating journey a year ago. I’ve been doing my edge drills and they’ve been so challenging, the moment I loosened my trucks it’s like im on a whole other level. I’m transitioning like a boss, manuals are controlled and I’m spinning on my heel/toe and and I haven’t even watched that video yet.
Thank you so much for everything!
Now, how do I know if I have them to loose? I’ve got them tightened just before I can hear/wiggle the that top washer.
Usually you’d have a hard time controlling a one foot glide if they’re too loose.
@@Skatie ...and that's exactly what's happening. Soon I'll go ahead and invest in a line with those click action kingpins. I've wondered why all skates don't come that way, especially since when we practice the "other" leg just to make sure we're balanced. Would seem we'd want our hardware to be as precise as possible.
Thanks for the info
I have a question. I recently got a pair of Chicago Classic Women's Roller Skates. And they came with a jump bar. So when I adjusted my trucks when they first came, I only loosened the bolt on the bottom. But after watching this video, I looked at my trucks, and there is a nut on top of the jump bar. Now I'm not sure if I even did it right. I did notice a difference after I loosened the bolt, so I thought I'd done it right. But what should I do about about that nut on top of the jump bar? And, do I need to keep the jump bar on them? I want to make sure I do this right and would appreciate any help you can give me.
It sounds like you’ve loosened them correctly. I would leave the jump bar on these as it gives extra strength to the plate. The chicago skates will be ok to start rolling in but you may find you need to upgrade quite quickly as you progress.
@@Skatie Ok thank you. I'm just starting to skate on a small driveway now. But hoping to go to a larger space soon.
Katie, my Bauer Turbo’s disintegrated and split. Do you know of companies that can replace boots?
I’ve seen lots of skaters get their old Bauer’s out and for them to have perished. If the boot has perished it may be that the cushions on the plate have too. 😢 😢
dude thank youuuu my nut was tightened all the way and still making that noise and i didn’t know the washer would help 😌
Glad it’s helped! 👍🛼
so for the rollerskates with the pink goe stop, is it impossible to adjust them? I bought toe guards but it seems like they won't fit if I can't adjust the toe stop
Most skates can take toe guards, usually to get them on you need remove the toe stop first. . Which brand skates do you have?
@@Skatie I have oxelo, but I already discovered how to do it!
Brilliant! Well done x
💡

Any recommendations for intermediate roller skates?
It depends on the style of skating but I always recommend Edea / Risport on a roll-line plate. If you’re not looking for custom and are after more of a complete set then Chaya Melrose elite are a good skate
For non-adjustable toe stops use a longer bolt with some washers.
Good idea!
What type of washer works best. O-rings or hose types. Are there specific washers for skates?
Any type of washer will work as long as the inside matches the axel size. Usually 8mm
@@Skatie You're the best. For answering all the questions of your viewers.
Hi, if anyone can asnwer this, i have these skates, adult ones, with the plastic trucks, like the one in the video. I tried to adjust them until they do like 3:45 but the thing is, they still dont. I loose it, like more than a whole turn, more than 2 whole turns, and as in the video katie says that just a little makes a difference, im afraid its because of the quality that they wont get loose enough without compromising the truck stability, or maybe its because in this case i do have to loose them quite a bit. What do I do, try to loose them more to see if i get them right, or do i leave it like this? Its not like I have a place to actually skate, so i practice a bit at home, with the exercises for indoors from another video of hers, so maybe i dont really need right now the trucks to allow me to bend my foot if im not gonna make turns or anything. Any advice?
It could be that the rubber bits the cushions are too hard so even though you loosen the trucks the rubber is too hard to squash and give movement.
@@Skatie Probably that, because i did loose them a bit more, and then they moved more but i could move them with just my hand too 😔 thanks!
My adjustable toestops seem to be stuck. First one came out while I was skating. I tried to scre it back it, now it won't budge. Any suggestions?
Oh no. 😢 it’s possible that it’s cross threaded. If you’ve got a skate shop nearby they may be able to advise.
Thank you for your response. I took them back to the shop and they were indeed cross threaded. Luckily they were within warranty so they gave me a new pair of skates.
The question I’ve though is can you change the not adjustable one into an adjustable stopper?
Unfortunately not. To change the stopper you’d have to replace the plate to a plate with an adjustable toe stop.
@@Skatie thanks for your time btw!
So when I turn my skates make like a weird noise and it doesn’t turn smoothly is it that my trucks are to tight? I don’t have the tool and I’m debating if I should get it or not? Help
It could be. Or it could be the cushions are maybe too hard / soft. What skates do you have? It’s always good to have a skate tool just in case you need adjust anything whilst out skating. I can suggest a tool that fit too.
@@Skatie I just bought a crab tool off of Amazon and I have impala skates!
@@dynamicdiamond6555 do you know what the issue was? I just got a pair of skates and I’m not able to turn in them. I was thinking I may need to adjust the trucks.
@@anawatl28 yes, it was the trucks! I adgusted them and it worked
What’s weird is I have my skate trucks tight but I guess I weigh 200 pounds and the 1/4 turn I felt like I was dying and not going anywhere. I put them tight and it was effortless to push and still turn
I’d that’s working well for you then it’s correct! Have fun xx
@La Miss Most plates will take the 63mm wheels, the 65mm can occasionally cause problems. However, if you find the nut is scraping you can firstly try putting a few washers on the axel to push the wheel out a little or you can use a Dremel to cut off any excess bolt below the nut.
Merci!!
Is there a way to make the wheels not go backwards? My daughter is just starting to learn and we thought that might be helpful
Unfortunately not. It is possible to get skates for really little ones that the wheels lock. But proper skates won’t lock like that. I’ve just posted a video about teaching children to skate that might help.
Do you have a link to the children's skate learning- thank you so much for responding
Absolutely here it is. czcams.com/video/RGsMnRpUvzM/video.htmlsi=q50-Lu29MvDBifKA
Is it okay if one of my wheel went tilted than the other?? thankyouu
Hi. It may be that your bearing isn’t fully seated correctly. You can either take the wheel off and try to push the bearings in further or tighten the nut down as far as you can and then loosen the nut back up until the wheel spins again. That can solve a wonky bearing.
@@Skatie oohh okaayy, thank you so muchh for your respond, I just found out that one of my wheel went tilted after using it on the outdoor w/ the hard surface 😁
It’s hard to say what could have happened without seeing it. Perhaps you could send me a picture of the wheel via email? Learn@skatie.co.uk
@@Skatie sureee! thank you so muchh for your respondd 🥰🥰
My skates came with the wheels being all different tightness so I would push and my front wheels would stop I fixed them tho
Well done. Often the skates need adjusting when they arrive. Glad you fixed it. 🤩
What kind of wheels are those?
They’re Boiani Star wheels. They are pretty old, not sure they make them anymore
where can I find the tools?
Hi. It depends which skates you have as the sizes vary but this tool fits most skates. Let me know which skates you’re using so I can check this is correct. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072LY5824/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=skatie00-21&linkCode=w00&linkId=ecbc92ca550504eb523bace9caf4402f&creativeASIN=B072LY5824

I've had a search on the web and unfortunately I cannot find the measurements for the nuts, trucks etc for this skate. However, I'm confident the tool I sent you the link for should fit as they look to be quite a standard size. Just make sure you can return if it doesn't fit. Alternately you can use standard tools i.e a socket set, spanners, screw driver etc. Happy rolling x
@@Skatie tysm!
I need a link to those wheels plz
Hi. Which set of wheels do you like? The ones with the hub, the pink ones or the blue?
@@Skatie the white ones in the beginning with the dark wheels
Unfortunately because I’ve been skating forever I have some unusual equipment. This wheels are from a Skechers Britney Spears skate from the 90”s. They are the softest wheels. Thank f you look for something around a 78a. 62mm. They’d be great for outside. The Britney Spears wheels are probably a little smaller around a 58mm. But bigger wheels are better outside so the bottom is the skate has better ground clearance.
my toe stop goes at a 75 ima change it tommorow
Just check to get the right type as there a few different toe stops, adjustable, bolt on, metric, imperial, hex nut etc…..
I can't take my wheels off and there is so much hair stuck in them
Yes I always get those little rounds of hair around my axel. Yuck. Do you have a spanner or socket you could use to remove the nut?
@@Skatie no an I tried to find it at local stores but none of then have it the size is 9/16 or is it 9/32
@@Itsme.riahhh 3/8" wrench for wheel hardware. 1/2" wrench for axle nuts. 9/16" wrench for kingpin nuts.
I’m too weak to untighten them 😭
Are you using a crab tool or a “proper” tool? You’ll get much better torque from a full sized spanner.
Honestly I thought the wheels are supposed to be very slippery
For inside you can go as slippery as you can manage but for outside softer is better as it absorbs the bumps but it’s always preference.
i recently got skates. They came with a tool. I tried to use that tool to loosen my wheels but for some reason they won’t give and I ended up just bending the tool somehow 🥲 help?
Sometime those T skate tools aren’t up to the job. You can also try a standard wrench. They’re much stronger.
