  • Anthony Holand of Martha's Vineyard is widely considered the country's finest weathervane maker. Correspondent Martha Teichner meets the metal sculptor whose custom weathervanes tell remarkable stories (and come with a two-to-three-year wait list).

    Incredibly talented, and he's also a really lovely guy.

    Martha Teichner is a national treasure. I still remember the story in which she shared about her father a WWII veteran. Good story telling stays with us. God bless.

    Yes, Americans love a good story! And this one was a dandy! A guy learns how to do something really cool that makes his customers, and all who see his work, very happy! I love all of his work, but my favs are the school of fish, and the African elephants. Imagine what all he has had to learn about the subjects of his art just to make the most realistic pieces! And he's probably an employer and a teacher, as well. And because of all of those qualities, he's most likely wealthy! What a story!!!

    It's so funny. Just a day, or two, ago, I was imagining what a weathervane would look like on the next home I purchase. After seeing this piece, the weathervane might cost more than the house!

      it’s not at all. all hand knocked. Let’s say it takes 100 hrs that’s 2 weeks salary, half a months health insurance, worker’s compensation, rent for his store front, utilities, his truck. copper sheeting and materials are higher then ever before, honestly he’d be lucky if he will have 500$ left over for a rainy day. If he did it in a garage he could do it for a 3rd of the price, but he’s also considered one of the best and it’s considered art so in 20 years it will be sold at auction for 50k. If I could spend 10k I’d much rather have that then a limited 1 of 500 signed photocopy of a picture someone took.

    • @rickyspanish9002
      @rickyspanish9002 Před 12 dny

      @@philipnewlun9641 i understand overhead, thank you. I think you're a little high (excessive) on his overhead costs; if he was making enough to open a store front, he's not hurting financially and there is no way he is only pocketing $1000 if he is generating 20k a month.
      I think you're extremely optimistic on what they will auction for in 20 years. They're neat and im sure he has a solid name, but 99% of art doesn't appreciate that much that fast.
      They're certainly cool, but 10k for a weathervane is insane.

      @@suelyons531 Yes, infact I am... because instead of spending stupid amounts of money on a weather vein to show off to people to make myself feel important, I spend money on things that friends and family can share and enjoy.. cool theme parties, nice drinks, comfy atmosphere.. you know, fun party stuff..

    A wonderful segment. Thank you so much for sharing this story. I find it funny that the Islanders "...got a look and suddenly wanted sharks of their own..." when they fought and fought against having Quints shack built on that location for the film and did so ONLY ON CONDITION it was torn down as soon as filming ended. In a way , they didn't want the head, the tail, the whole damn thing. 😄
