4 Reasons People Don’t Launch Their Online Course

I recently surveyed over 10,000 of my students asking what their biggest goal was this year. Do you know what most people said?
To launch their first online course.
And do you know how much money most of them wanted to earn from their course specifically? $1000 per month.
Seems like a reasonable goal to me. But they haven't achieved it yet.
I then asked in the survey what is their biggest frustration, holding them back from achieving that goal. And what stood out to me was a clear thread of 4 distinct reasons why my students hadn't launched yet.
Today I want to share those 4 reasons with you in the hopes that we can break down those obstacles and help you launch an online course this year!

Lack of time is my biggest struggle. I have been watching your podcast and I have been outlining my course but I haven’t been able to actually product content on a regular basis and start filming my course. I know there are ways to make the time but it is overwhelming. Thank you for the encouragement!

I am writing this before listening. For me, I have boku content from years of corporate training. The work I have been doing for 6 months is creating the online business. Now I am at the end of the process. I am working through all your ideas on setting up the broadcast and email campaigns. There is a lot of work in doing that well. Maybe I am overthinking. Time will tell. But I have a level of personal excellence I must maintain. Thanks for everything Graham. I have listened to a lot of people and you are the best. BTW, you remind me of Rachel Maddow. She is a little long winded, but she always knows her facts and makes compelling arguments. I hope you take that as a compliment.

For me it is #4 by far...Lack of confidence...We are in the process of a move from Connecticut to South Carolina and will be on the road most likely on the 15th. I signed up before I realized the dates but I will keep an eye open for you in the future.

Great episode! I like how Chase Jarvis changes up the “Fake it until you make” statement. He says “Make it until you make it”. I think that’s so much better. It’s all about doing the thing, putting your video/photo/song/whatever out there, and then do it again. Tweak it if needed. Did you learn something from making the the thing? Apply what you learned, do better this time, and keep making it until you make it!

My biggest obstacle rn is the idea that my audience needs to be bigger before I can launch. (Because a launch is an event, as opposed to it being an evergreen thing afterwards)

Makes sense. My first course sold like 2 or 3 copies - but it went on to do over $1M in sales over a 7 year period of time. Evergreen is huge as your audience grows!

I feel attacked in a good way. 🤣 I definitely fall in the failing to make time category but I'm getting there! I've started blocking off time for working on my course. You're absolutely right. Just gotta make it a priority and bit by bit it'll happen.
Outside of that, I think my second biggest struggle is getting over how huge of a project it is. I get overwhelmed by it easily but I've shifted my mindset so I focus on the little wins and milestones. It'll get done eventually so long as I keep hacking away at it. May not be til 2021 but that's ok. 🤣

Great episode. Imposter syndrome is real and that to me is where "fake it til you make it" can help folks. But you are correct...we are all fed up with "fake" and crave genuine, empathetic teachers like yourself! The other expression that could be relevant to your "excuses" episode is "Perfect is the enemy of good enough!" Go for minimal viable product and iterate :>)
Hi Graham. I'm an aspiring author. First of all thanks for the most awesome value on Passive Income channel I've ever subscribed to. I would like to ask if I'm selling books, because books does not have high-profit margin like courses, would you still recommend using CZcams as a leads machine? Or Instagram? Can you make a video for writers and authors who sell written content like eBooks and books because I'm thinking twice on how to market books today (Is it the same like how you market Courses)? Thanks Graham for being the best teacher!
I'm one of those who lack confidence (I've also had a negative experience launching an on-line course which fell throughand was unsuccessful at all). And when I was listening to part 4, I was almost ready to burst into tears. Years of being unconfident during my younger years took a toll on me; I'm still dealing with the post-effects of it. However, this video is a life changer. You, Graham, have just helped me to dig into my problems, and for this, I thank you.

Also wondering if we should start with Mailerlite, or something similar, if just now starting our email list (versus spending money on Kajabi at this point). Then later drop Mailerlite and do email in Kajabi?
Perhaps! And to your question about email list building - you can definitely start with something cheap or free and then move that list over to Kajabi when you're ready.
Graham, I have a corporate job that I would love to leave, and I work at the time of the 1kcourse. Time off is not flexible. Is there any possible way in the universe I could get a recording? I know you said you aren't recording or selling the course, but.... could I change your mind? Could I buy a recording? Could you have another event on a Saturday morning? Or Weekday evening? Or 4am? Or any time but 9-5pm Mon-Fri? I totally get it if the answer is no. I know it's presumptuous of me to ask such a thing of you. You are awesome and still the model I'm trying to follow for my business and work/life balance! Thank you for all the content you put out for us and for being an example of what a Christian business owner looks like.

I have a dear friend who actually has Kajabi and uses it as a standard website. No courses. He can easily come up with IP and he says it’s not something he’s into. Simply, he doesn’t have the programming or foresight to see the value of automated income, serving people he would not serve otherwise and ascending people through his value ladder.

Interesting that you know the Enneagram...
...And even more interesting that you see yourself as a type 1. I really like your work. But all your energy, motivation, way of communicating and skill level in being able to adapt to change is seriously not a 1 type.

Hey my friend GREAT CONTENT and I agree with being 100% you and transparent is the key but I take fake it til you make it as an internal thing that if done properly will allow the quantum field to eventually take over and turn it Into what we know as habit which equals results 🙌 the key is not being concerned with the external fake world and realizing it powers come from our internal Godly Greatness !
