Resin Tutorial - Ocean Art for Beginners with Lacing

- The secret to creating beautiful, realistic beach art is tinted epoxy resin and a hairdryer: it's an easy technique that involves pouring layers of resin in various shades of blue, then finishing with a layer of white that gets pushed around with a hairdryer to create a lacing effect reminiscent of sea foam. Resin is essential to creating realistic ocean art: it's clarity, consistency and gloss replicate the look of water in a way you simply can't get with any other medium.
In this video, we join artist Rebecca Brianceau who shows us how to use ArtResin and ResinTint to achieve an ocean effect. These techniques will help take your artwork to the next level!

I love that little "person" who pops up on your vids. 💝

This is absolutely beautiful, I Live in Florida and love the Ocean and anything Island related. Beautiful art. Well done ladies.
Amazing artwork. FYI, for safety reasons, you should wear a respirator and goggles when working with these products. Long term exposure can cause respiratory health problems if you don’t use personal protective equipment. Keep you the great work.
Thanks for watching :). Unlike many other epoxy resins, when used as directed ArtResin is non toxic and does not produce harmful fumes or VOCs. ArtResin has been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and has been designated non-toxic when used as directed and safe for home use in a well ventilated area. When used as directed you should protect your skin by wearing gloves but a respirator is not required unless you prefer to use one. Have a look at our blog for more information: www.artresin.com/blogs/artresin/41788993-artresin-is-safe-for-home-use?_pos=1&_sid=21e484730&_ss=r

I attended an art show last year where you had some pieces displayed and I was captivated by the beauty in them! I just love this video because it shows how much love you put into each piece! Amazing job at showing the viewers step by step instructions and providing tips and tricks along the way so they can attempt at home!
Thanks so much Shawna! I'm so happy you made it to my exhibit❤
The students squared one looked much better! I love that water effect look she had with the blue at the top before the teacher flattened it out and destroyed it. It was giving it so much detail and character.
SO glad you loved Joanne's piece :)
Both pieces are gorgeous!!!
thanks so much :)

Great tutorial...nd ur tip on keeping the white mix to harden a bit..was indeed useful..!
Hey , need ur advice. Do we hv to wait for the blue resin coat to harden a bit bfr pouring the white mix for waves? Or can be done immdl?

Thank you Tracey for the review :)
Beautiful art work as usual thank you for sharing. One question for you please. Can I use white piñata alcohol ink instead of ink sinker
Fantastic tutorial! Both pieces are gorgeous!!!!
Both pieces are Beautiful 💙💙

This is so beautiful 😍
Thank you!
Amazing quality of the Video 👍🏼. Súper the techniques as well.
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful pieces
Thank you so much !
Perfect timing! I just prepared a canvas to do this but kept delaying the pour because I didn't feel fully prepared! Now I am, thank you!!
Great news! keep us posted on your journey :)
@@rebeccabrianceau where do you get that blow dryer and canvasses? And did you varnish this piece? If so, at what point and with what varnish specifically? Help😭
@@TheHummingbird876 The blow dryer is from a drugstore, any basic one will do. The piece is created with resin, which is a high gloss finish, so no need to varnish. I hope that helps
Lovely lovely lovely 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you :) !
This video was so helpful and inspiring! I just ordered resin finally after years of wanting to give it a go!! Thank you
Thanks Tinkerbella :) Glad you liked it
How did it turn out???
I am asking bcz i can't do it
Great tutorial 👍🏼👏🏻💗
Thanks so much!
Makes me think of my trips to Jamaica. I’m going to try this but by making an irregular shape. I saw videos of people making resin faux geodes, so maybe I’ll get my irregular shape that way and use it as a counter top accent or I’ll figure out how to cut/ make and organic shaped wood base 🤔
Absolutely brilliant. this is the best way to make ship dioramas and other sea related scenery, I searched a few places and forums before stumbling upon this wonderful video. thanks you so much. Cheers. Ed Vancouver, BC.
Thanks Mehdi! I'm sure that would look fantastic as a backdrop for a ship diorama! Great idea 🙂
Thanks so much for the kind words :) I'm happy you like our video.
Love them both!
Felicitaciones, muy hermoso trabajo.!!!!!!!!
mucho gracias!!!
they are great pieces, if you wanted to turn the circle one into a clock, would you have to drill the hole in the middle first , can you add the numbers while the resin is sill wet?
So pretty
Thank you Beth!

Great tutorial and GORGEOUS pieces! I have some embroidery hoops that I bought to do ocean scenes in but could never get the sand the right colour. So they're still sitting and waiting. I might give it a go now. Thank you. 😊
Using resin & embroidery hoops? If so, how?!?
@@AliceNsWonderland embroidery hoops are open in the middle !! With cotton material caught between two pieces of round wood to do embroidery on. How would you use an open hoop like a hola hoop to do anything on?
@@bettebyrd that's why I asked, how? Maybe they just use the center piece Rhett solid. The outer loop is the only "open" loop
Nice work girls 😀
Sweet.
Thank you for this, I wish you would've touched on the sand mixture a bit more.
Wow
Very good
Ahh man 😣. I was really Hoping to see some Lacing.
Nice easy way, I never thought about it
Thank you!
@@rebeccabrianceau hello, if I want to do like this job, is it possible to use normal water-based paint ??
@@moroccandiycreators5966 do you mean watercolor pigment into the resin?
@@rebeccabrianceau yes
@@moroccandiycreators5966 Unfortunately, you can't mix water pigments into the resin, it won't combine. You'd have to try art resin pigments for the best effect.
Seriously love your work! I have been admiring your work on Instagram and can' wait to get my own Ocean Soul piece. I will connect with you when we are ready to get a custom piece for our beach house in Bali. P.S your tone is perfect.
Thanks so much!!! I really appreciate the support.
GOFGEOUS what white pigment did you use and what colors to make that sand color
Thanks for watching :). We used our ResinTint white, once mixed into ArtResin we let it sit for a bit to thicken up so that it didn't blend in as quickly. The turquoise/blue can be made through mixing the ResinTint blue, green and white found in the ResinTint Originals kit.
www.artresin.com/collections/colorant
Ok this may be a silly question but how are you determining the no more than six percent rule?
Nice Explanation
Thank you!
Beautiful work!! Love them both!! Thank you for another great tutorial! 🌊💕

I love the ocean blues you are using, but I'm not being able to get that color blue with the Original ResinTint set. The blue bottle you are using of ResinTint looks like a different shade, but I don't see another shade that you sell. I'm in the middle of filling a hole in my table right now, so would really appreciate a reply as soon as you can. Thanks!!
Beautiful! What do you do about the drips on the back of your canvas? Do they scrape off well? I've made some coasters like this on cork and wipe the drips underneath constantly, but there is always more and they're impossible to remove without ripping the cork the next day.
I sand them off with a small orbital sander.
Good 👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much :)
Before you apply the white do you let the base dry?? Or do you work on wet resin?
Ow my... Am I going to do that? No way it's amazing
Thank you so much!
Nice work dear, so inspiring.

@@jecifashionjewelry871 Thank you Ester!! Big hugs from Mexico :)
@@rebeccabrianceau Waoooo thank you 😊.
i've tried this for the first time, I messed up a little on the first pour so I'm gonna try to use some of your tips for the next pour
good luck !
Amazing 😍😍
What kind of heatgun do you recommend using for resin art? Thank you.
In this video we use a hairdryer to move the resin around and create the design. Once you have poured your resin we recommend using a butane torch or a heat gun to clear off any surface bubbles. A butane torch works best, but heat guns do the job too, just not as quickly and they can move the resin slightly. Here is a link to our butane torch:
www.artresin.com/products/artists-torch-pro
Thanks for the informative video - what a great tutorial! Can you share a link to the panel board you used with the built-in, raised lip?
I would love the link as well. Thank you.
I love it !! How can you clean the drops that gets hard
you can sand them off or shave them off with an exacto knife.
Love it...
Thank You so much for sharing the video! I am getting ready to order and didn't see a tint for the sand color?
Hi there! Thanks for watching! We don't sell the specific "sand" colour, but we have made a colour mixing guide to tell you how to mix our ResinTint colours into your own custom colour.
Here is the link: www.artresin.com/pages/mixing
what did you use for the white?
beautiful!!!! what is the white pigment for the waves? diluted? thanku. amazing.
It's ResinTint White mixed with ArtResin :)
Hello, I have tried to make some wave, but white pigment did not braked, it was more like a cloud rather than wave foam, have some idea why it did note get celled? I used table top epoxy, ratio 3:1.
where do you get the lipped cradle boards? Thanks for the great tutorial!!
I believe you can find these boards in most art retail stores.
I got some at Jerry's Artarama for about $2!
Where is the best place to get good sand? Does she suggest a certain brand?
this is a great clip - just wondering what the temperature setting is on the blow dryer? Any chance of this catching on fire when torched ?
Hi Maureen, we just use a regular blow dryer. The more heat you use, the easier the resin will move-you can experiment with what works best for your project. You can use a torch safely on your ArtResin, just ensure you do not let the flame linger in one area too long as it will burn the resin. It just takes a quick pass of the flame to clear the bubbles. Do not use a torch when using alcohol inks as alcohol is flammable.
Hey its so so so beautiful and soothing to see the process too !!!! Here you used 1:1 resin can we use 3:1 as we don’t find 1:1 here at my place
The viscosity of the 3:1 may be different making it harder to control. You may want to experiment first.
Love it! Did you add clear in front of the white to help move the waves?
No, just white resin and the help of the hair dryer to create these beautiful waves :)
I love this tutorial - I will definitely try it. I have two questions, if I may. Can I tint the resin with acrylic paintings, or do I have to use a special tint; also, when I cover my paintings with resin, I always end up with one of the sides not completely covered by the resin I always make sure the painting is clean, I use a level to make sure it's even and plenty of resin. Any idea why my edges are not getting covered? Many thanks.
Yes you can us acrylic to tint the resin :) Just keep in mind you don't want to use more than 6% colorant to the total volume of catalyzed resin or you may have issues with curing. As for the sides not being covered. If you are pouring over canvas it might be that your canvas needs to be supported with a backing. If your canvas is not supported then the weight of the resin can cause the canvas to sag in the middle and the resin to pool slightly which would in turn pull the resin from the edges.
@@Artresin thank you so much - I’ll try potting a backing 😄
